Growing up, picture day was both fun and a little dreadful. There was something special about dressing up in elementary school. By middle school, though, it hardly mattered bc let's be honest, most of us looked a little awkward in those years.

Now, officially in my 40s, I'm much more comfortable with my look. Every wrinkle, every flaw feels well earned.

Fundraising and development roles are stealing the show this week, with a strong mix of Director of Development and Senior Development Manager titles across education, environment, and social impact orgs. Salaries are looking healthy too, with many roles topping $100K and a few unicorns creeping close to $200K+.

Is it offer season? Several of my clients received offers this week and I’m seeing a lot of movement across my network with people accepting and starting new roles. If you’re in the middle of a job search, I sincerely hope you see similar momentum soon!

Or if you're going through the offer process now, this negotiation tip might help. I was talking one of my clients through this stage recently, and it struck me how quickly we jump into bargaining before we’ve fully advocated for what we actually want. 

It’s very human to ask for something and then immediately soften it with, “and I can do this in return.” However, an offer negotiation is not the same as how we handle everyday transactions (i.e. I’ll put the baby down if you do the dishes). 

If you want a remote option, ask for the remote option. If you want a higher salary, ask for the higher salary. 

You do not need to immediately add that you’re willing to come onsite more often, give up benefits, or accept trade-offs. Those factors may eventually come into play, but not in your initial ask. 

Research in negotiation science consistently shows that the first credible anchor strongly influences the final outcome. In simple terms, people who ask for more often receive more, even when the final agreement lands somewhere in the middle. 

If you begin trading concessions too early, you risk leaving value on the table and losing the strongest possible offer you could have received.

Deloitte surveyed 10,000 people on disability inclusion in the workplace. 75% had never requested an accommodation!

This got me thinking: if you're not asking for accommodations once you're already in the workplace, you're probably not thinking about asking for one during the application or interview process either.

That's a lot of people grinding through hiring processes that weren't built for them, when they didn't have to.

Accessibility matters at every stage of hiring, from how you submit materials, to what format you use, to how interviews are structured. You're allowed to ask for what you need.

Here are 10 (out of many) accommodations you can request as a candidate:

A few things to know upfront: You don't have to disclose a diagnosis. You just need to say you need an accommodation. You don't need legal language. "I need an adjustment to the hiring process" is enough. The earlier you ask, the smoother it tends to go.

10 accomodations you can ask for:

1. Extended time on assessments (common for ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety)
2. Alternative Interview Formats: Written responses instead of verbal, or pre-recorded answers instead of live interviews
3. Interview questions in advance, especially helpful for neurodivergent candidates
4. Assistive technology compatibility: screen readers, voice-to-text, keyboard navigation
5. Sign language interpreters or real-time captioning
6. Flexible scheduling for medical needs, medication timing, or energy limitations
7. Breaks during long interviews or assessments
8. Alternative assessment methods instead of timed tests or live whiteboarding
9. Accessible Interview Locations: Wheelchair-accessible spaces, private rooms instead of open office settings, or clear directions and navigation support
10. Physical environment adjustments: reduced noise or lighting, private rooms, scent-free spaces

Employers are generally required to provide reasonable accommodations. Most requests are not as burdensome as people assume.

Equal participation is always worth asking for.

Even if your goal is a remote job, you may still need to invest in in-person networking.

Think of your job search as a target. The bullseye is your ideal role.

If you've been applying early, networking, following up, and still not hitting that bullseye consistently, it might be time to expand outward one ring at a time, to increase your chances of actually landing something.

Ring 1 - Title Variations: The same job has a dozen different names. "Marketing Manager" is hiding as "Growth Lead," "Brand Strategist," or "Content Director" somewhere out there. Map the title ecosystem and get in the habit of searching for skills instead of titles.

Ring 2 - Industry: Your skills travel better than you think. Identify 2-3 adjacent industries where what you do is just as valuable, just in a different context.

Ring 3 - Company Size: Been targeting bigger, more established orgs? Smaller, hyper-local orgs often move faster and love a broad skill set. Worth a look!

Ring 4 - Location or Remote Flexibility: Opening up to hybrid or even occasional travel to a second metro can dramatically expand your pool without giving up your everyday flexibility.

Ring 5 - Seniority Level: This one deserves an honest conversation with yourself. A strategic step sideways can get you into the right organization faster than holding out for the exact right title.

Ring 6 - Employment Type: Contract, fractional, and interim roles are an underused bridge. They build relationships, add recent experience, and convert to full-time more often than people expect.

The key: expand ONE ring at a time. Not all of them at once.
