I didn’t expect that.

I thought writing was about clarity. Strategy. Structure.

It turns out it is also about facing things you have been quietly avoiding.

At one point, I had to write about losing my mom to cancer when I was young. 

I assumed I had already processed it. I had not. Putting it into words forced me to slow down and sit with memories I usually move past. That was emotional work.

Then came a different kind of pain.

Trying to organize dozens of ideas on psychology and growth into something simple. Something useful. Something that does not overwhelm the reader.

That was mental work.

Cutting pages. Connecting dots. Killing ideas I liked for the sake of clarity.

Some days I was more drained from structuring thoughts than from revisiting personal ones.

Writing is not just self expression.

It is self confrontation.

I didn’t wake up one day and think:
I’ll go hit the gym today… and also start writing a book.

It started much smaller than that.

Around Down’s 10-year anniversary, I felt this weird urge to tell the story.

Not the polished version.
Not the “look how successful we are” version.

The real one.

Because surviving a decade as a startup is rare.
Thriving after that? Even rarer.
And when I looked back at all the obstacles, wrong turns, and near-misses,
I thought: this is worth documenting.

So I wrote an article.

A behind-the-scenes look at what building really looked like.
The good, the bad, and the uncomfortable parts.

No success-bias filter.

We shared it around.

It got picked up.
Featured.
Promoted.

And suddenly, people who didn’t even know me were reading it and saying:
“Wait… this is interesting.”

That was my first moment of:
Okay. Maybe there’s something here.

Then someone in the industry emailed me out of the blue:
“Have you ever thought about turning this into a book?”

I hadn’t.
But I couldn’t stop thinking about it after.

For a while, I stayed on the fence.

Was this just a long article?
Was it just a memoir?
Was it worth the time?

And then things clicked.

I realized this wasn’t just about telling my story.

It could actually help people rethink how they start and grow businesses.

Not as a tell-all.
Not as a highlight reel.

But as something useful.

That’s when I committed.

Not casually.
Not “let’s see how it goes.”

Commit as in:
The next 1-2 years of my life.

That was the real decision point.

Not when I wrote the article.
Not when it got featured.

When I decided it was worth going all in.

This book has a very specific target audience.

Me. A few years ago.

Back when I was still early in my career.
Back when I was in the corporate world.
Back when I was trying to figure out how growth actually works.

And here’s the thing:
I didn’t want to write a book that makes you feel smart.
I wanted to write a book that actually helps.

Because I genuinely wish I had something like this back then.

For two reasons.

First, it’s approachable (and hopefully a fun read).
I would’ve picked it up, even when I wasn’t much of a reader.

Second, it might’ve saved me years.
Not because you can shortcut everything…
but because you don’t need to learn every single lesson the hard way.

And “early” doesn’t have to mean age.

It can mean:
early in your startup journey.
early in your growth journey.
early in building whatever you’re building right now.

This book is for people who want to grow personally, and grow their company alongside it.

And if it’s not a good read, 
or it doesn’t feel more approachable than most business books…

How do you build a writing routine if you’ve never written a book in your life?

Short answer:
I didn’t have one.

No fancy system.
No lifelong habit.
No romantic coffee-shop rituals.

This was my first book.

Before that, I’d written a few things here and there.
Mostly one-offs. Nothing close to long-form.

So I had to build a system from scratch.

The first thing I did?

Commit.

Not “I’ll write when I feel inspired.”
Actual commitment.

A timeline.
A deadline.
And small, concrete goals.

We broke everything down into chunks.

Six months for a first draft.
Minimum target: 50,000 words.

(Reality check: I wrote over 80,000 and had to cut 10-15k. Oops.)

Then we worked backwards.

50,000 words over six months =
about 200-300 words a day.

That’s it.

Not scary.
Not dramatic.
Just… doable.

So the rule was simple:

Hit the small number.
Every day.

And let it compound.

The first few weeks, that system carried me.

Some days I wrote 1,000+ words.
Some days I barely hit 300.

But on average, I stayed way above target.

Once I had momentum, I switched to weekly goals.

More flexibility.
Less guilt.

Some days: 1,500 words and flow state.
Other days: zero. Life happens.

And that was okay.

One more thing that mattered a lot:

I blocked time in my calendar.

Two hours a day.
Non-negotiable slot.

Did I always use it perfectly? No.

But seeing it there was a constant reminder:

“You owe yourself time for this.”

That mattered more than discipline.

It wasn’t about being perfect.

It was about showing up consistently.

Small wins.
Stacked.
Over time.

That’s how the book got written.

Before “Outrageous Growth” was a framework,
it was just me worrying that my first startup was going to fail.

Back when I was building my first dating startup, I had serious doubts it was going to work.

The kind you don’t always admit out loud.

But at some point, I did.

I said it.
I was probably going to fail.

And if I was going to fail, I at least wanted to build something that felt honest.

That’s how Bang With Friends was born.

Yes. That was the name.

Provocative? Absolutely.
Subtle? Not even close.

But in 2013, that contrast mattered.

Most dating apps were polished. Safe. Predictable.

We did the opposite.

We were direct.
Uncomfortable.
Hard to ignore.

And that contrast is what made people pay attention.

That’s the first layer of “outrageous.”

Stand out enough to create tension.
Enough to spark conversation.
Enough to be noticed.

The second layer is harder.

Put yourself out there.

Every day.

Even when it’s uncomfortable.
Even when people ignore you.
Even when they say no.
Even when they don’t get it.

I still have to remind myself of this with the book.

Not everyone cares.
Not everyone reads.
Not everyone thinks they need growth.

That’s fine.

The principle is the same:

Push through the discomfort.

The third layer?

Authenticity.

Bang With Friends came from a very real place:

If this doesn’t work, at least it should be me.

Why can’t we just say what we want?
Why can’t we be direct?
Why can’t dating be honest?

That idea felt true to me.

And when something feels true, it carries.

Was the name ridiculous?
Yes.

Am I glad we used it?
Also yes.

We eventually evolved into Down.
Less provocative.
Still clear.

Different wrapper. Same honesty.

That’s where Outrageous Growth really comes from.

Contrast.
Courage.
Authenticity.

Not tactics first.
Mindset first.

And that’s exactly what this book is about.

Not copying playbooks.
Not chasing hacks.

Building something that stands out,
feels true to you,
and is worth sticking with when it gets uncomfortable.

Because that’s where real growth starts.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

We say that.

But we don’t live that.

We judge wine by the label.
We judge products by the landing page.
We judge movies by the poster.

First impressions aren’t simply shallow. They’re signals.
So when it came time to design the cover for Outrageous Startup Growth, I felt the weight of that.

For a long time, this wasn’t “a book.”
It was late-night notes in Google Docs.
Stories I rewrote three times because they felt too raw.
Lessons I learned the hard way.

Then I had a cover idea that felt so clear, so connected to the message, that I asked the publisher and their design team if we could explore it, even though it meant going a little off script.

Especially because the idea involved the back cover, and authors rarely push into that territory. There’s usually a conventional structure for it.

But I’ve never let what’s typical stop a burning idea from coming out.
They said yes.

Months later and lots of nagging from me, we finally landed it.

The cover is the moment this stops being a private document and starts becoming something you can hold. 
It’s the first signal of what kind of journey you’re about to step into.

For now, just this:
Some books you actually can judge by the cover.

Most books promise to “change your life.”

Mine doesn’t.

I’m not expecting anyone to read my book and suddenly “get everything.”

That’s not realistic.

I’m not trying to teach every lesson.
I’m not trying to turn anyone into a different person.

Honestly?

If people remember one or two stories,
and those stories stick because they feel familiar…

That’s a win.

Because maybe they’ve been there.

Made a similar mistake.
Faced a similar decision.
Handled something the same way.

And thought:

“Yeah… I’ve done that too.”

That’s the moment I care about.

When something clicks.

Not because I said something smart.
But because it connects to their own experience.

If that happens, it changes how you think.

About building.
About leading.
About growing.
About taking risks.

A little at a time.

Not in some dramatic way.

Just… more awareness.
Better instincts.
Fewer avoidable mistakes.

If this book helps someone become a better founder,
product person,
growth marketer,
manager,
or just more thoughtful about how they work…

Then it did what I hoped it would do.

“Our growth is stuck.”

If you’ve ever said this, you probably weren’t looking for philosophy. You were looking for a tactic. A new channel. A better funnel. Something that would move the numbers fast.

That makes sense. When things stall, the instinct is to add. 
Add activity, experiments and complexity.

But most of the time, growth isn’t stuck because you need more tactics. 
It’s stuck because you’re not clear on what actually needs to grow.

“Revenue” sounds clear. “Users” sounds ambitious. But those are outcomes, not levers.

Underneath them is usually something more specific. Retention. Activation. Engagement. Trust.
One thing that matters more than the rest right now.

And here’s the uncomfortable part.
You probably already know what it is.

You’ve seen the weak onboarding. 
The drop-off point. 
The confused users. 
The messaging that doesn’t quite land.

It’s easier to chase a new strategy than to face the real constraint.

But growth starts moving the moment you focus on the right problem.
Not when you add another tactic.
When you get honest about what actually needs to change.

So if growth feels stuck, ask yourself:
What is the one thing, if it improved, that would change everything?
