And I get it.
I did too.

At some point, I realized I’m “consciously unemployable”. 

That’s a choice. 

Not because I can’t play the corporate game (well actually if you know me, I can’t 🤣), but because I finally saw how much of it was built on rules that were never written for us. And I was done building others’ dreams.

Those ideas hit because they were so human. Unexpected. Odd.
The kind of weird that makes you stop scrolling and go, “Wait, what?”

That’s what AI can’t fake.

It can totally take your ideas and scale them. But if what you feed it is already kinda basic… it’s just going to spit out more basic.

What’s that mean for us humans? Creativity actually matters more now. Because AI’s like this giant volume knob. Whatever you give it, it just cranks it up.

Think you have no power at the table? 

You do.

There are three sources of power in every negotiation, and you probably already have at least one.

1️⃣ BATNA (your Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement).

If you have real options outside the deal, you are less dependent on the other side and gain the freedom to walk away. 

Build alternatives early, quantify them, and use them to set your reservation value. 

Examples: secure a secondary supplier, pilot a different partnership, or line up another client.
	
2️⃣ Role power.

Authority, title, or control over resources creates objective influence. 

Map who holds decision rights, surface the true decision maker, and make approval limits and budget control visible. 

Role power also includes process influence, such as control over timelines or gating decisions.

3️⃣ Psychological power.

How you feel changes what you ask for and how you respond. 

Confidence affects voice, posture, pacing, and framing. 

Prepare thoroughly, recall past wins, rehearse difficult exchanges, and use simple rituals to activate a sense of power before the meeting. 

Research shows that feeling powerful produces effects similar to having actual authority.

Practical playbook:
• Strengthen your BATNA by expanding and quantifying alternatives.
• Document and communicate role power to clarify expectations.
• Prepare thoroughly and train presence to generate psychological advantage through posture, tone, and framing.

Combine these sources, and they compound. 

Negotiation is about positioning, perception, and preparation as much as facts. Measure outcomes, debrief after each negotiation, and iterate on what strengthened your BATNA and presence.

Most negotiators don’t get beaten by the other side.

That’s the part nobody likes to admit. We talk about tactics, power, leverage, strategy… but the deal is usually lost long before the conversation even starts. 

It’s lost the moment a cognitive bias latches onto your thinking and quietly bends every decision that follows.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
You can be smart, experienced, and well-prepared… and still get blindsided by the same seven traps that derail top operators every day.

And the worst part?
You almost never notice them in real time.

That’s why I built this carousel. It breaks down 7 cognitive biases that consistently hurt negotiators:

1. Anchoring Bias that drags your numbers off target.
2. Confirmation Bias that makes you hear only what matches your story.
3. Loss Aversion that turns you into a risk-avoiding version of yourself.
4. Overconfidence Bias that blinds you to the other side’s leverage.
5. Availability Bias that makes irrelevant memories feel like facts.
6. Escalation of Commitment that keeps you in bad deals too long.
7. Reactive Devaluation that kills good ideas just because they weren’t yours.

Seven Mental Traps in Negotiation

Negotiation with liars: profit, prison, or both?

When “sales talk” quietly turns into fraud

Or maybe you think “puffery” is harmless fun.  

Think again.  

Research shows that even small lies in negotiations can cut long-term trust and value.  

Most leaders underestimate how quickly innocent-sounding “sales talk” can spiral into illegal misrepresentation.  

It’s not just about lawsuits. 

It’s about breaking trust, losing careers, and irreparably tarnishing your reputation.  

So, how do you avoid that slippery slope?  

Here’s what I recommend my Clients to keep their sales teams honest:

Divide your team’s communication into three buckets:  
- Legitimate bluffing (like “we’re exploring options”)  
- Acceptable puffery (“our product is the best on the market”)  
- Red-line lies (anything about facts, numbers, or third-party actions)  

Write one simple rule:  
- “We never lie about facts another party cannot easily verify.”  
- Review it before your next big negotiation.  

When a counterpart drops a bold claim (“We have another offer”), resist the urge to react.  
- Instead, calmly ask for specifics and evidence.  

Train your team to reframe:  
- From “say whatever closes” to “say only what you’d feel comfortable repeating in court or before your board.”  

Build an escalation process:  
- If someone feels pushed to “massage the truth,” they must be able to flag it safely.  

Mistakes to keep in mind: 

Treating sophisticated counterparts as a license to lie.  
- Fix: Assume every email, chat, and recording could become evidence in court.  

Confusing silence with honesty.  
- Fix: You don’t have to reveal everything, but what you do say must be true.  

I know a sales VP who banned “phantom offers” in her team. Instead, they used real market data to create pressure.

Deals slowed a bit, but complaints dropped, and renewals increased.  

The same rule applies at home. 

Once trust erodes there, every future “deal” becomes harder.  

If you’d be embarrassed to read a tactic aloud in court, it doesn’t belong in your negotiation playbook.

Ever walked out of a negotiation thinking,

Here’s how you build that space as a leader:

→ Name the pressure, not the failure.
Say, “This quarter is heavy,” instead of “I’m dropping the ball.”

→ Run a 30-second reset before reacting.
One breath. One pause. One question: “What’s actually needed here?”

→ Set a boundary that protects your judgment.
Decline one meeting a week to think, not react.

→ Model emotional hygiene for your team.
If you acknowledge your own tough moments, others feel safe to surface reality earlier.

→ Rewrite the inner script.
Replace “I should know this” with “I can learn this.” Small wording, big acceleration.

→ Use compassion in conflict.
Try a two-sentence curiosity check: “Help me understand your intent. Here’s mine.” Conflicts shrink fast.

This isn’t about pity.
It’s about keeping your leadership sharp, steady, and human, so your team follows you because they trust your presence, not your pressure.

That’s where real influence lives.

The kinder you are to yourself, the more decisive, composed, and strategically useful you become for everyone around you.

Stop seeing enemies and start seeing differences

A mental shift that turns toxic stand-offs into stable agreements by replacing enemy vision with creative difference-bridging.

Because when you see someone as an enemy, your brain responds with threat, defense, and shutdown.

This reduces cooperation, you get tunnel vision, and ideas stop flowing.

How you see your counterpart shapes every move that follows.
See an enemy → eliminate them.
See someone different → bridge the gap creatively.

To prevent this negative behavior, try this:

1. Name the lens you’re using.
Ask: “Am I seeing someone to eliminate, or someone to understand?” 
This alone shifts your mindset from threat to possibility.

2. Notice how each lens rewires behavior.
Enemy → defend, attack, shut down.
Different → ask, explore, collaborate.
Write down the contrast to expose your default.

3. Identify the fear behind their stance.
When you map their fears, the “enemy” image dissolves. 
Differences become solvable.

4. State interests instead of justifying positions.
Enemies argue for dominance.
Different minds trade reasons and build options.

5. Test your lens with one bridging question.
“What outcome would protect what matters most to you?”
Enemies reject questions; different humans answer them.

6. Offer options designed to bridge, not defeat.
MESO-style options transform a clash of positions into a search for mutual wins.

But watch out for these pitfalls:

• Mistake 1: Treating resistance as hostility.
Fix: Ask what pressure they’re absorbing.

• Mistake 2: Trying to overpower instead of out-create.
Fix: Focus on broader interests rather than narrower positions.

When you stop trying to defeat the other side, you finally see the ideas that can connect you.
