OpenAI Reveals Early ChatGPT Ad Pricing

OpenAI has started sharing early details about how ads may work inside ChatGPT, including a reported price of around $60 CPM. While ads are still limited and not widely rolled out, this gives marketers a first real signal of how AI-native advertising could be priced.

Here’s the key takeaway:
✅ Early pricing is premium: A ~$60 CPM puts ChatGPT ads well above most social and display platforms, closer to high-end video or CTV placements.
✅ This is about intent, not reach: Ads inside ChatGPT sit next to high-intent conversations. Users aren’t scrolling. They’re asking, researching, and deciding.
✅ Testing phase, not scale yet: These prices reflect early experiments, not a mature ad system. OpenAI is still learning how ads should fit without harming user trust.

Here’s how to think about it strategically:
→ Don’t compare it to Meta or Google display: ChatGPT ads are closer to search or mid-funnel assist, not awareness blasting.
→ Expect strict controls: With trust on the line, OpenAI is likely to limit formats, targeting, and volume in the early stages.
→ Plan for assisted value, not last-click: If ads expand, success won’t look like direct conversions. Think influence, guidance, and brand presence during decision-making.
→ Watch how pricing evolves: CPMs often start high in new channels. The real signal will be how pricing adjusts once inventory expands.

This isn’t about ads taking over ChatGPT. It’s about testing whether advertising can exist inside AI without breaking the experience. The bigger shift is clear: AI platforms are becoming part of the discovery journey, and pricing is already reflecting that value.
