The Half Percent Project

When I was 8, I had a dog. His name was Brutus. One day, I came home from school to find that my mom sent him away to be with Jesus. After 25 years, my trauma ended when we adopted our dog, Sadie, from the shelter. One year later, Sadie was joined by Andy. After 15 years, they're both gone. But my love for them remains.  I'm helping the Half Percent Project, a non-profit to encourage wealthy philanthropists to donate a half percent of their giving to animals because we can do a lot better by them.

Our client, a Rustbelt manufacturer in the steel industry supply chain with global operations, was in the process of transforming its operation to modernize and prepare for new applications. The CFO was negotiating a cutting-edge business process arrangement with one of Canada's largest technology providers. But, the negotiations were at an impasse. I was called in to "see what I could do."

It quickly became clear that we needed to overcome cultural differences and a language barrier to finish the deal. I was able to bridge the communication gap by interpreting what the French Canadians meant and not just listening to the words they used.

Both companies offered me jobs. The CFO also recommended a book for me to read called The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. The principles explained in that book stuck with me so much that I've internalized them and apply them to my worldview.

Sometimes I sit alone and ask myself if everything I’ve been through was real…
Because honestly, I don’t want to believe my challenging beginnings.

I don’t want to believe that after my mother passed away, it was my elder sisters — girls who were still in JHS and primary school — who suddenly became mothers overnight.

Children raising children… because nobody else was ready to step into that shoe.

I don’t want to believe those mornings in primary school when we would put cassava ampesi on fire with green green, rush to school, work on our sections before assembly, get our name taken for roll call… then sprint back home to continue the cooking — only to return again for morning classes.

And at break time, we would run home again to eat quickly before anyone noticed we were gone.
That was our life. That was our reality.

I don’t want to remember the days we ate stew with no red oil — not because we wanted to, but because that was all we had. And still, somehow, we found joy in it.

Because in our hearts, we just wanted to study hard…
to make our father proud…
to make our sisters proud…
to make life proud of us.

I don’t want to go back to those days of crying over school fees, fearing that one term of unpaid fees could end everything we were fighting for.
I don’t want to relive those nights of worry, confusion, and silence.

But…

I do want to believe in the future God promised us — the future others doubt, but we wake up every day to work toward.

I want to believe in the future where a sugarcane farmer’s son becomes a United Nations Ambassador.

I want to believe in the future where a village boy stands on global stages and makes Africa proud.

I want to believe in the story where someone once looked at me and said, “I never knew an African could be this human… this intentional… this committed to changing the destiny of a continent.”

I want to believe in that future.

Because the truth is:
Our beginnings may not be our fault,
but our endings…
our endings are our responsibility.

And I want to remember the story that says:
It is possible.
No matter who doubts you.
No matter who mocks the process.
No matter who stands at the back and throws heavy criticism like stones.

I want to believe in that story —
the one God is writing through my life,
the one my mother’s absence prepared me for,
the one my sisters’ sacrifices planted in me,
the one my painful beginnings shaped…
so that my future would carry weight, purpose, and destiny.

This is not just my story.
This is the story of every Ghanaian youth who refuses to let their past define their tomorrow.

And trust me…
our tomorrow will be beautiful.
