For me personally, having a deep knowledge and technical expertise in search marketing and strategy has led to invaluable experience in developing multi-channel marketing campaigns for both national and global clients.
I’ve always been an advocate of using emerging technology to harvest attention and generate revenue for clients - and I’m an even bigger advocate of kindness within business. There’s not enough of it.

What we’re waiting for now is widespread adoption.

Two recent announcements from Google have further validated some long-held thinking of mine:

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶.

Togethet, they accelerate a shift towards zero-click by:

 • Standardising ecommerce signals (product, price, availability) at the protocol level
 • Layering personalised AI on top that keeps users inside Google’s ecosystem
 • Increasing the likelihood that outcomes are decided for you, not discovered by you

When answers are personalised and transactions are abstracted, optimisation changes.

This is why we’ve started thinking about a continued shift from search optimisation and more towards Surface Experience Optimisation.

We are defining a surface as any interface where intent and choice intersect.

From a search perspective, this means brands need to:

 • Be structurally legible to engines
 • Design experiences that resolve intent, not just capture clicks
 • Engineer brand recall through consistent messaging and PR amplification
 • Own topics via well-structured, continuously evolving content
 • Treat the website less like a destination, and more like a database

Almost all our ecommerce clients have seen a decline in sessions but an increase in conversion rate, if your growth still depends on visits, you may already be behind.

Because 20% of your time you're doing actual work and 80% you're explaining, convincing, justifying, deep breathing and crying.

I'm still reeling from a frankly appalling pitch process recently. We lost. I'll take this to my grave.

I'd like to know if anybody is doing this to combat the imbalance of expectations in agency pitch processes? Specifically around post-pitch feedback. 👇 

Everyone signs into a pre-pitch agreement, which is effectively an expectations management document signed by agencies and brands before committing to a pitch.

Might look a bit like;

Brands, we need this from you:
- Accounts access (if not, insights we share will be third-party/aggregated) 
- 30-minute feedback call following the pitch, regardless of outcome

Agencies, we need this from you:
- Agenda/pitch structure to be sent in advance of the pitch 
- Leave 15-30 minutes at the end for client questions

Failure to meet these requirements results in a penalty.

Penalty example: no feedback received from client (I said I'm reeling) = agency then invoices for time spent on pitch process

Scratching the surface here clearly. More thinking to do on it.

But this is one of our industry's biggest scandals.

Gather round kids. This one's gonna start out sounding like a joke, but is absolutely no joke. Listen, imagine and enjoy.

Did I ever tell you the story about the time we took £10k of our client's daily paid budget and turned it into £165k paid revenue?

That was a record-breaking day. High-fives. And then this happened:

The very next day, we took £9k of our client's daily budget and turned it into £241k revenue.

Back-to-back record-breaking days, smashing the previous record (set by... us 💁) by an additional £100k.
