As a fractional CFO I use the 10+ years I spent working IN a law firm to help law firm owners gain an in-depth understanding of their firm’s financial picture.

I started as a legal assistant and worked my way up through the “law firm ranks”. I know how a law firm runs day to day. When you hire me as your fCFO I bring my financial expertise and my law firm operational experience to our meetings. 

I love working with law firms because they are unique in the small business world. Revenue can be a roller coaster and expenses are unique to law firms.

Here's how firms should think about paid legal directory profiles and guaranteed placement listings. 

A lot of times these are two very different decisions being conflated. They need to be evaluated separately. 

First, I think it's important to note that paid, and non-paid for that matter, legal directories profiles do not create demand. Avvo, FindLaw, Super Lawyers, Martindale...they can't make more people search for your name or your firm. What they can do is help influence what shows up when someone already is searching for you. 

If your name or firm name is being searched with consistency (or if you rely heavily on referrals), having a professional, distinguished presence on authoritative directories that appear prominently on the search results page can often be a solid investment. 

Why/how this can help...

-Improves how you're presented when prospects vet you
-Helps control more branded SERP real estate
-Many directories provide backlinks, embedded contact forms, and a few allow you to direct links to internal pages of your website
-Increasingly, these directories are also being referenced and cited in AI-generated answers, which adds a new layer of visibility. 

On the other hand, paid or premium placements for non-branded visibility...completely different playbook, and this is where mistakes are most often made. 

Premium placements that can guarantee positioning (i.e. top 1-3 or 1-5 placement) can be expensive and should only be considered strategically. As a general rule...

If that directory doesn't appear frequently or prominently for the non-branded queries you care about, it's not going to be a viable channel (regardless of the discount or incentives being offered). These placements are usually best used to supplement visibility where your website does not rank organically, or to stack SERP real estate when your site, GBP, Google Ads, or LSAs already appear.  

In those cases, premium placements can help funnel demand, but only if the directory itself has meaingful visibility for those queries. Discounts and limited-time offers getting slung around on 24-36 month contracts should never be the deciding factor. 

Before you throw away your firm's hard earned money...

-Confirm how often the directory shows up for searches you care about. And understand whether the investment supports branded protection or non-brand growth. 

-Evaluate how they fit into your broader marketing mix and strategy. And test with real SERP data (i.e. do some searches!)...don't just take the sales person's word for it. 

Paid legal directory placements can be smart. But they can also be very, very expensive. 

The difference here comes down to alignment...with your goals, your visibility, and your overall marketing strategy.
