Fun facts about my time as a nurse:

-I spent 8 years at the bedside in the world of maternal child health (L&D, NICU, postpartum)
-I then spent several years in nursing leadership positions such as clinical nurse specialist, professional practice specialist, and clinical educator
-I've held a number of non bedside nursing roles such as camp nurse, prenatal educator, research nurse, continuing education instructor
-I used to be a long distance runner and have run 2 half-marathons

I experienced racism and feeling different at an early age.

A kid at school asked me why my face was flat like a pancake.

Someone prank called my dad because his name was 
the funniest sounding name in the phone book.

I was told I ate weird food.

But, I was always taught to be proud of my culture.

My mom came to my school and taught a lesson on Lunar New Year.

She showed kids how to use chopsticks.

They talked about how fun it was for years afterward.

Today, on Lunar New Year, I'm continuing the tradition at my kids' school.

Don't be ashamed of who you are or where you come from.

Be proud and confident. 

Be the change you want to see.

I’m not here to tell you to be more resilient or fight the system.

The truth is, we’re exhausted and I get it.

I’ve even heard of nurses leaving to work as waitresses or at the beer store.

This makes me so sad because I know there is something better out there.

I have been there and I found a job that allowed me to heal again.

I was still using my nursing knowledge, skills and judgement every day.

I didn’t have to ensure a toxic workplace, do shifts, or endure an unsafe workload.

There are jobs out there right now that:

✅ Don’t require going back to school
✅Are still in the healthcare field
✅Don’t mean you have to give up your passions
✅Give you work life balance

You just have to know the right strategies.

What I miss most about my past toxic job:

The cafeteria wraps.

If I'm really being honest with myself,

The few people I enjoyed working with also left.

And while I'm grateful for the struggles that made me who I am today,

I've not been back there in years.

People tell me everything is the same.

The toxic rockstars are still there.

And in some cases, have moved up despite their behavior.

So if you're stuck and afraid to move on, 

Ask yourself what you are (actually) going to miss.

Leaving wasn't the loss.

Staying would have been.

There’s so much more to work than a paycheck. 

Some nonmonetary career wins worth celebrating:

❤️ Looking forward to going to work
❤️ Supportive colleagues
❤️ A boss who truly wants you to succeed
❤️ Getting actual bathroom and lunch breaks (seriously!)
❤️ Feeling like you’re making a difference
❤️ Flexibility when you need time off
❤️ Being able to attend your kids’ events

I’ve realized there are many versions of what success looks like.

✅ If this resonates, share it with someone who needs the reminder.

For the first 10 years of my career, I was often told:
I didn't have enough experience.

Well, we all have to start somewhere.

Now that I'm almost 20 years in, I'm sure the opposite will happen.
“You’re overqualified.”
“You’ve been doing this too long.”

It’s funny how quickly the narrative shifts.

You’re not too “old” or “young” for anything.

Your value is in your skill, perspective, and ability (not an arbitrary number).

So the next time someone tries to box you in because of years, remind yourself: it’s your capability that counts.
