For the first time in a while I've received multiple calls from friends asking what is happening in the domestic freight market. 

So we are clear, these friends are clients who have become friends. Almost all of my high school buddies could care less about the freight market.

They are seeing rates jump almost seemingly out of nowhere. 

It's been an interesting opportunity to talk about policy enforcement, perpetually low rates, increased operating costs driving carriers out of business, and a sudden slight "demand" after back to back to back US wide storms.

Policy enforcement and increase operating costs are here to stay. 

Are we going to get three storms in a row, with record breaking chills nationwide? I don't think so. 

February is usually the time of the year when rates jump up, and tender rejections are highest. We are 100% in the thick of it right now. 

If we continue to feel this pain come March, I'll believe this is a fundamental shift in the supply/demand of trucks vs loads. Until then, I think this is a short term blip.

I've spent the last 72 hours in NYC with Nick Virgona, The AGL Group Director of Carrier Relations visiting some of our steamship line partners. 

A few of my biggest take aways from this particular trip are quite simple. 

Steamship lines have too much capacity for demand. Not for all trades, but overall. 

Consolidation in the carrier space is creating an Airline like monopoly, and 
quickly. If ZIM/Hapag goes through we are down to just a handful of carriers.

In person meetings trump zoom calls, 15 minute speed dating sessions at TPM, or email, and It's not even close. 

In the freight forwarding world, as in domestic brokerage in order to move freight well you need quality vendors. We are fortunate to have solidified relationships over the last 13+ years to have exactly that.

Shipping to the Middle East? 

Here's a quick update. 

All carriers have stopped taking cargo destined for the Mid East.

Some carriers have announced an "end of voyage".

What does end of voyage mean? It means carriers will be ending the voyage short and will be discharging containers at ports all around the world. 

In addition to leaving your container in a random country the shipper will pay a change of destination charge as well as whatever other charges are associated with moving these containers to their final home (wherever that may be now). 

Fun times ahead for anyone that has cargo on the water.

We now have (another) war in the middle east. What does that mean for your freight?

Slower transit times? 

Not necessarily. Cargo ships from the US were not going through the Strait of Hormuz prior. 

Increased costs? 

Also, not necessarily. Demand was already sluggish. Carriers have indicated ocean freight rates have had few tailwinds to increase. I don't foresee that changing. 

Now, if you ship to the middle east, or the Indian subcontinent then you may experience major issues. Specifically, a lack of service.

Every steamship line has halted service to the Mid East without any expected return time frame.

As things develop, I will report here. A wait and see approach is most prudent in situations like these.

Last week I posted about the domestic freight market rates being elevated. In that post I made a comment that we probably won't see back to back snow storms again this year.

For those in the northeast, I am sorry I said anything. It looks like we will in fact receive back to back snow storms...again.

The Port of Boston and Ports of NY/NJ were closed yesterday, 2/23. 

Ports of Boston and NY/NJ are closed today as well.

Freight rates and capacity will most likely remain tight the next few weeks.
