Does anyone else who works in tech and software engineering feel like they don’t really *do* anything anymore?

Sure I still create things out of nothing and make meaningful impact by taking a product or a section of a product from a point A to a point B that makes a meaningful impact.

However my entire workflow now feels like I get an idea of what needs to be done and then I have a tool or AI agent that helps me execute on some increment of it, then I use my domain knowledge to check the results and refine slightly if some tests don’t work then refine the results and have it help me execute again. Then I have something help me execute on the next increment and so on.

I find myself doing a lot of ideation and verification these days but I don’t feel like I’m in the flow I used to be in when I would go like “oh that’s why I have to add this piece of code right here”. Or wow I found this obscure line near the bottom of the 1000 line stack trace.

It’s kind of weird and I’m not sure if it’s having some effect on our brains what do you think?

I heard a quote in a video somewhere that really grinded my gears this week and I want to share why it did and how I think their intended message could have been communicated better.

Like a lot of content these days does, it was discussing some opinions and predictions related to AI in the tech industry. Nothing new there.

Where I started to get skeptical was where they said something to the effect of "once these AI tools were becoming mainstream in companies (implied to be around 2024), suddenly everybody is an AI engineer".

The way that this comes across to me is that the person who said that is basically criticizing job seekers for having one type of resume before 2024 and then suddenly switching it to emphasize a different skillset after 2024. Like oh we used to have a lot of web developers for example but now everyone is an AI engineer, said in seemingly a sarcastic way that makes it seem like people are misleading hiring teams.

Here is the problem with this sentiment though. Job seekers have not switched the emphasis in their resumes because suddenly in 2024 there was a mass movement for job seekers to mislead people. They switched the emphasis in their resumes because job postings seemingly overnight stopped listing the skills that talented people all over the world have spent years or decades cultivating in favor of asking for 10 years of experience in AI tools that had only existed for 1 year.

And due to the systems in place (yes even if it's a human doing this manually it's still a system) to make sure people's resumes match job descriptions before selecting them for an interview, job seekers by necessity had to start shifting the emphasis of their resumes to match these new flavor of job descriptions in order to get an interview.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think the person speaking in the video has ever been a job seeker at least in the last few years. If someone is settled in a company for years or only works in the hiring side without having looked for a job, it can be easy to assume that the candidate pool has suddenly started misleading people. But that's far from the truth. Like so many people say about other realities in today's world: it's just the market...if there are job descriptions there will be people doing what they can to match them. If you build it they will come.
