The double standard is real.

When a company decides an employee “isn’t the right fit anymore,” it’s called:

➡️ strategic

➡️ professional

➡️ business

➡️ “nothing personal”

But when an employee decides the company isn’t the right fit anymore?

Suddenly it becomes:

❌ unprofessional

❌ disloyal

❌ disrespectful

❌ “a character issue”

Same action.

Same reasoning.

Two completely different judgments.

Employees have watched companies rescind offers, restructure teams overnight, eliminate roles suddenly, and lay people off without warning.

So when an employee protects themselves, explores options quietly, or hesitates before committing to a new job?

It’s not betrayal.

It’s survival.

Does that excuse ghosting? No.

Does it excuse disappearing without communication? Also no.

Professionalism still matters.

But we should stop pretending that only one side is allowed to make decisions about fit.

Companies make these decisions every day.

Employees are allowed to make them too.

“I’m just bad at math” is one of the most common sentences I hear.

A recent student came to me after failing their first stats quiz. They’d already decided:

“I’m just not wired for this.”

“Everyone else gets it.”

When we dug in, it wasn’t ability. It was:

-slides packed with symbols

-no time for questions

-and zero connection between “P(A ∩ Bᶜ)” and real language.

Once we slowed down, drew pictures, and translated the notation into words, their quiz grades jumped… but more importantly, their anxiety dropped.

Struggle with math often says more about the environment than your intelligence.

Monday you arrive at work, and one of your colleagues is gone. 

Disappeared without a trace. No goodbye, no warning. After a few days you might wonder what happened to that colleague. You might be curious whether they left the company voluntarily or were terminated. You might wonder if leadership is upset or relieved about their departure.

After seeing dozens of instances like this throughout my career, here are some signs you can look out for that tell you whether the company regrets this person leaving, or has been waiting for this to happen for a while.

⭐ Signs that the person leaving was not wanted, and they will be missed.

➡️ When the departure is announced, leadership says "we are sad to inform you".

➡️ An email goes out to the team announcing that the person left, and has messaging that the person will be deeply missed.

➡️ Team leadership starts saying a lot of wording in casual conversation centered around the fact that the departed person left "big shoes to fill". That could be saying that certain work will be slowed down, that the team won't be the same. Things like that.

➡️ It is openly discussed how long this person was at the company and what they contributed to the team.

🚩 Signs that the person leaving was a termination or that the departed person will not be missed

❌ The announcement of the person's departure is simply "this person is no longer with the company". And any further discussion is centered around who will take on the extra work rather than on what the person themself contributed.

❌ If the departure is voluntary and notice is given, coworkers and leadership give empty platitudes wishing them the best rather than saying how much they will be missed.

❌ No email goes out mentioning the person's name or their contributions.

❌ Leadership's top priority is getting that person's data out of the systems in a way that it's not a priority for a regrettable departure.

Family members or friends that disappear or become estranged often won't tell you why it happens.

Movies and books often make it seem like that when a friendship or relationship dissolves, there is always a big blowout of some sort that makes it happen.

Sometimes it unfolds that way, but more often you just notice one day that someone you once held dear has been ignoring you for 6 years.

And you reach back out and it's never the same again. You wonder what went wrong.

On this platform I do often talk about ghosting in the job market but I'm largely desensitized to that. The slow estrangement of people you're formerly close to is far worse.
