Read the chapter.
Memorize the material.
Take the test.

Programming looks similar on the surface, but it works very differently in practice.

In coding, learning the concepts is important… but it’s a separate skill from applying them.

That’s why so many people feel confident after finishing a textbook chapter or course, and then feel completely stuck when they try to write code from scratch for the first time.

Nothing is “wrong” with them.

They’ve just crossed the line from recall to application and those are different muscles.

The real skill in programming is built in the applying phase:

You are wasting your most valuable asset on LinkedIn.

Most people don't realize LinkedIn allows you roughly 100-200 connection requests per week.

Here is the strategy I’m using for 2026:

1. Treat invites like inventory: Only connect with people you actually want to engage with.

2. Ditch the "Text Only" posts: They blend in. Mix in carousels and video to stop the scroll.

3. Comment with substance: 2-word comments ("Great post!") do nothing. Write 10+ words to add value.

4. Move to DMs: Don’t let the conversation die in the comments. That’s where the opportunities happen.

Best Ways to Use LinkedIn

In the last few months the LinkedIn algorithm has changed more than usual, so I actually got a copy of the latest algorithm report to dig into and see what the findings are.

Looking forward to sharing what I learn and how the strategies for posting and engaging might change this year.

Most people who struggle in their first programming course aren’t bad at coding.

They’re learning too many new abstractions at once.

Recently, I worked with a student who:

• Was learning C (and manual memory management) as their first programming language

• Had been out of school for nearly a decade

• Was juggling assignments, unfamiliar syntax, and conceptual exams

He told me (paraphrased):

“I can write some code… but I don’t really understand what’s happening.”

That’s not a motivation issue.
That’s a foundations problem.

So instead of rushing to “finish the assignment,” we slowed everything down and focused on how the program actually thinks:

⭐ What pointers and structs really represent
⭐ How arrays behave in memory (not just syntax)
⭐ Why mod, division, and loops work together
⭐ How command-line arguments flow through a program
⭐ How to debug by reasoning, not guessing

At one point, after stepping through a loop line-by-line, he said (paraphrased):

“I think I finally get why this works, it’s not magic anymore.”

That’s the turning point.

Success in programming isn’t about memorizing syntax, it’s about building mental models that compound over time.

This is exactly the approach I take in my tutoring.

I work best with students who:
• Are new to programming
• Are career-changers or returning to school
• Feel overwhelmed by “intro” CS courses
• Want real understanding, not copy-paste fixes
