Water is an underinvested market, yet it’s one of the most crucial resources we have. But I believe that through better storytelling and innovation, we can shine a light on the water industry’s challenges and opportunities. 

In 2014, I founded Sutro, a robotic water diagnostics platform designed to improve water chemistry and safety. I sold Sutro to Sani Marc in 2019 and am currently leading day-to-day operations.

Today, as President of Sutro (a subsidiary of Sani Marc), I oversee the development, marketing, and sales of smart water monitoring devices. Our technology is trusted by some of the biggest brands in the industry, and we are the only NSF-certified autonomous device for water safety.

Humans are social creatures. 

Video conferencing is great for hacking out limited conversations but meeting IRL is a world in its own (it’s the one our ancestors used to live in).

We’ve been running a swimming pool route for more than a year. It’s had its “growing pains”, but we’ve learned a ton. 

2 things: 

(1) Pool owners are simple (we knew this from Sutro). They want to know that you’ve come, the work that you’ve done, and that the pool is clean (which for them, many times, means clear). Our motto: just do good work. 

(2) You need to build with the times. With agenticAI, how can we utilize clawdbot or other tools to increase our service level and take work off the hard working guys that are cleaning the pools. We’re coming at the business from a different lens. As product folks, just building a better experience. 

At the end of the day, we know it’s not rocket science. You’re cleaning a swimming pool, measuring and treating the chemistry, but how do you take an age old buisness - see it through a different light, and make the service better?

Why was it so hard to get a lab test for your tap water? The business model was the barrier. 

I sat down with the CEO of SimpleLab, Inc., Johnny H. Pujol, to discuss why water data has been so inaccessible for so long.

Why?

Because labs were built to service government contracts & city scale developments. 

They didn't have the infra to sell to people at home.

Thats changing. We are witnessing the democratization of environmental testing, and supported by folks like Johnny!

I sat down with Rich Sloan, a guy who went from Flint, Michigan to the Las Vegas desert to build a company that pulls drinking water out of thin air. New episode of Liquid Assets drops tomorrow. 

Rich is the CEO of WAVR Technologies, and what he's building is crazy. Inspired by the skin of an Australian tree frog, he's developed a membrane that  a wicks water vapor out of the atmosphere.

Most international water projects fail because they’re designed for donors, not the people using them. James Leitner and I sit down to talk about his work at MissionCleanWater. 

We talked about why we need to treat rural water like a professional utility and not volunteer side projects. 

Mission Clean Water shifts the focus from just building wells to managing them like professional utilities to ensure they actually stay running.

They provide clean water access in rural Uganda by rehabilitating broken infrastructure and training local communities on long-term maintenance and financial sustainability.

for years, we’ve paid "premium" prices for great marketing and plastic packaging, not better water.

"You don't necessarily get a premium product for the price... I don't think anybody ever set out to fill the world with plastic... but now that we know better, we can do better."

Today is Valentine’s Day.

For many people, it is a day about flowers, cards, and dinner reservations. For me, it is something far more personal. Six years ago today, at 34 years old, with two young children at home, I had a lifesaving pacemaker placed in my chest.

Just before that procedure, I fainted. My heart rate had dropped to 32 beats per minute, with a four second pause. Those four seconds changed everything.

I remember the fear and the uncertainty. I remember thinking about my boys and wondering what the future would hold. In that moment, nothing else mattered except being here for them.

Today, I am living fully and with deep purpose. Since receiving my pacemaker, I have run two marathons, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast. I did not run them to prove anything to anyone. I ran them because every single mile is a reminder that this heart is still beating with intention.

This scar is not a symbol of weakness. It is a symbol of resilience, gratitude, and second chances.

On this Valentine’s Day, I celebrate love in a different way. I celebrate the physicians who listened. I celebrate my mom, who asked the hard questions when it mattered most. I celebrate my sons, who give me a reason to keep showing up every single day. I also celebrate this heart that continues to carry me forward.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is this: do not ignore your body. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. Hold your loved ones close.

Life is a gift.

Last year, I stood at the Stonewall National Monument for the first time as an openly gay man. I remember the weight of that moment. I remember feeling connected to the courage of those who came before me. I remember feeling grateful that their bravery created space for me to live more freely and more honestly.

Today, I am outraged.

The decision by the administration of Donald Trump to remove the Pride flag from Stonewall is not a small symbolic adjustment. It is a deliberate act that attempts to diminish visibility and rewrite history. Stonewall is not just a park. It is sacred ground. It represents resistance against oppression, dignity in the face of hatred, and the birth of a movement that changed this country.

When leaders choose to remove symbols of inclusion from a place built on the fight for equality, they are sending a message. They are choosing exclusion over belonging. They are choosing fear over love.

As someone who came out later in life, who worried about his children, his career, and his community, I do not take visibility lightly. The Pride flag at Stonewall is not decoration. It is a reminder that people risked everything so that future generations could live openly. Removing it does not erase us. It simply reveals who is willing to stand for love and who is not.

I refuse to be silent. I refuse to allow hate to define this moment. Love is louder. Truth is stronger. Our history will not be erased.

Over the past few years, both my life and my leadership have transformed in ways I never expected.

I am the son of a nurse who taught me that healthcare is not just a profession. It is a calling rooted in compassion and service. I am a father to three incredible boys who remind me every day why the future of work matters. I am a leader who believes that love, dignity, and opportunity should exist in every workplace.

My professional work lives at the intersection of education and healthcare. I focus on building bridges between academia and health systems, developing workforce strategies that help employers rethink how they attract, prepare, and retain talent. That includes designing internship pathways, strengthening mentorship models, activating intermediaries, and advancing employer first partnerships that create sustainable talent pipelines.

However, what matters most to me is this.

Behind every workforce strategy is a patient. Behind every redesigned curriculum is a future nurse, technologist, therapist, or leader who deserves to feel confident and prepared. Behind every partnership is a human being seeking meaningful work and the opportunity to grow.

I believe we can build systems that are operationally strong and deeply human at the same time.

I am here to collaborate with healthcare executives, academic leaders, and innovators who are ready to move beyond discussion and into action. Do You Know What Sinus Bradycardia Is?

Most people do not.

Sinus bradycardia is a condition where the heart beats slower than normal, typically fewer than 60 beats per minute. While it can be harmless in some highly trained athletes, it can also signal a serious underlying issue in people of any age.

Too often it is brushed off as “runner’s heart.”
Too often it is minimized.
Too often symptoms are overlooked.

Over six years ago, after navigating multiple healthcare systems, countless appointments, tests, and procedures, I was finally diagnosed. The journey to get there was long and exhausting. There were moments of uncertainty. Moments of fear. Moments when I wondered if I was being heard.

I often say that I may not be here today if it were not for my mother. In my case, one morning I experienced a heart rate of 32 with a four second pause, captured by my then loop recorder.

She researched.
She asked hard questions.
She pushed when answers felt incomplete.
She refused to settle for surface explanations.

Her advocacy likely saved my life.

Heart Month is not just about statistics. It is about awareness. It is about listening to your body. It is about asking questions. It is about second opinions. It is about empowering families to advocate when something does not feel right.

If you experience dizziness, fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath, or unexplained weakness, please do not ignore it. A slow heart rate is not always a sign of peak fitness.

We need more curiosity in medicine.
We need more listening.
We need more advocacy.

Standing on the Golden Gate Bridge, you cannot help but feel awe.

The engineering. The history. The way it stretches boldly across the water, connecting land and people. It is breathtaking.

And yet, this same bridge also carries a heavier truth. For many, it has been a place of deep pain. A place where some have chosen to end or attempt to end their life.

As someone who has faced my own mental health challenges, I do not take that lightly. I know what it feels like to carry silent weight. I know how easy it can be to smile on the outside while fighting something on the inside.

That is why I share this.

Beauty and brokenness can exist in the same space. Strength and struggle can live in the same heart.

If you are fighting something today, please hear me clearly. You matter. Your life matters. Your presence in this world matters more than you know.

And if you are in a season of strength, look around. Check in on someone. Ask the extra question. Stay in the conversation.

Also, something beautiful happens in their presence.

Others breathe easier.
Others speak more honestly.
Others feel permission to step forward as they truly are.

In healthcare, in education, in any workplace, psychological safety does not begin with policies. It begins with people who are brave enough to be real.

When we choose authenticity over approval, we create cultures where belonging is not a slogan but an experience.

There was a moment on this trip to San Francisco where I simply paused.

No agenda. No meetings. No expectations. Just breath.

Self care looks different for each of us. For me, it is movement. It is travel. It is standing somewhere beautiful with a cup of coffee in my hand and remembering that I am still here.

The past few years have not always been easy. There have been moments of dismissal. Moments where voices tried to minimize me and my community. Moments that could have caused me to shrink.

But I did not shrink.

I stand today more grounded, more proud, and more certain of who I am than ever before. Not because it has been easy, but because I chose to keep going. I chose to care for myself. I chose to protect my peace. I chose to live fully.

Self care is not indulgent. It is sustaining. It is the quiet decision to refill your own cup so you can continue leading, loving, and building spaces where others feel safe to do the same.

I recently joined Chris St. John on Rethink Imaging to talk about one of the most pressing challenges facing medical imaging today: workforce access.

Every year, tens of thousands of students want to enter imaging programs but can’t. At the same time, health systems face staffing shortages that directly impact patient access to diagnostic care. This isn’t a talent problem, it’s a systems problem.
In our conversation, we explored why imaging remains a hidden profession, how rigid education and accreditation models are limiting workforce growth, and why imaging needs to seriously consider modern pathways like apprenticeships, imaging medical assistants, and employer-funded education.

We also discussed why retention matters just as much as recruitment, and how sustainable workforce solutions must support both the professionals doing the work and the patients waiting for care.

As we honor the life of Rev. Jesse Jackson, I find myself reflecting on being a young student first learning about his work alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I remember reading about marches, speeches, and a movement fueled not by power, but by purpose. He stood boldly for justice, for economic opportunity, for voting rights, and for the dignity of every human being. He reminded us that America is not a single piece of cloth. It is a quilt. Many patches. Many stories. One shared thread.

That image has never left me.

The true way to honor his life is not simply to quote him. It is to continue the work. It is to build communities where equity is not an aspiration but an expectation. It is to lead with courage when it would be easier to stay silent. It is to ensure that opportunity reaches every zip code, every classroom, and every workplace.

In healthcare, in education, in leadership, we are still stitching that quilt together.

The question for each of us is simple.

How are we strengthening the common thread?

Let us honor his legacy not just in remembrance, but in action.
