A couple of weeks ago at DMM Conference in Zagreb, Croatia… it all went down. Luckily, there was no need to save the whole world – just the business world.

But to be fair, I really struggled to post about it 😅

• I wanted to give proper credit to each person
• It felt impossible to capture the energy in just one post
• I didn’t want to reduce it to a cliché “I'm beyond excited and honored...” kind of update

And honestly… how do you sum up meeting people you’ve looked up to for so long?

20–30 minutes a few times a week, adding actual value to relevant posts. This builds visibility faster than most people think.

✅ Publish once a week
One thoughtful, useful post is better than zero. Quality > quantity.

✅ Refine your profile
Make sure it’s crystal clear who you help, how you help them, and why they should care.

✅ Connect with intent
Don’t just collect contacts – build relationships with people in your field.

You don’t need to spend 2 hours a day on LinkedIn. But if you spend 2 hours a week doing the right things, you’ll already be ahead of 90% of that 47%.

When I was 7 years old, I became an actor.

My first audition was for a lead role in a movie with Oscar Winner Anne Bancroft… and I got it.

This wild stroke of luck started a childhood acting career which included:

- 30+ film, TV, and theatre credits
- the lead role on YTV’s “Screech Owls”
- & getting recognized on the street as “that nerd from Life With Derek” (please don’t Google it)

I planned to go to theatre school, get some “real training”, and start my life as a movie star.

But when I was 17, my life broke apart.

My little brother Lukey died while on a canoe trip in Northern Canada.

I was destroyed, and I turned to weed, alcohol, and eventually cocaine to try and forget the pain I was in.

I went to theatre school as planned, but my mental health was so bad I barely graduated, and quit acting after a year.

So I ran away:

First to Spain, then to China, where I discovered teaching and entrepreneurship, respectively. This made me confident and motivated, but still depressed and anxious.

When I came back to Canada, I went to therapy, and quit doing drugs.

And I realized:

I could tell my story, and teach others to do the same, onstage, in person, and online.

So I became a speaker & storytelling coach. Since then:

- 250+ talks for Google, Remax, Boston Dynamics, etc 
- 30+ leadership dev cohorts for Ericsson, Wayfair, etc
- Helped tech founders raise $350 million
- Coaches over 5000 individuals worldwide
- Scaled my service biz to $250K
- And been nominated for multiple speaking and business awards, including winning “Best Small Coaching Biz in Canada” in 2024

But the things that make me happiest are my wife, my (soon to be) 2 daughters, and my insane Corgi.

As well as my mission, which is to:

Build a million dollar speaking business, teach 100K coaches to do the same, and retire in the country with enough room to host family and friends whenever they want to come. Oh, and a bunch of dogs.

This is my face.

It’s… ya know. Fine. 

Pretty good, I’d say? Yeah, pretty good. Let’s lock in pretty good.

But ever since my 2nd daughter was born 5 weeks ago, I can’t shake the suspicion that I look like hammered sh*t.

I know that’s vain, and probably “not true”, but as someone who grew up obsessed with being good-looking, it fucks with my confidence.

Not only that, my OTHER source of validation has always been my ability to communicate.

My whole life:

- acting
- teaching
- entrepreneurship 
- and even in my relationships

The way I look and the quickness of my brain was where I felt I had value.

But now, about to speak at Elevate for a roundtable of executives, I feel like I have neither of those things.

So what’s left?

Well, the same thing I’m constantly reminding my clients and audiences gives THEM their value:

My story.

The strange confluence of childhood, schooling, family, travel, work experience and mundane yet formative moments that make each of us unique.

Those are the reasons to listen to me, not how I look or how fast I can say big words.

AND my ability to be present, exactly as I am, with an audience, and trust that’s enough.

I don’t want “you look great!” Or “you’re still in the newborn phase!” Comments.

While true, I know all that.

I wanted to share so in case someone else feels like they don’t look or sound their best, they are still worth listening to.

Especially if they start with their story.

Here's a tip to find paid speaking opportunities on LinkedIn:

Follow professional speakers. 

(Especially "non-famous" ones, but who are clearly established)

Here's why this works:

Pro speakers tend to post about past or upcoming gigs.

"Absolutely THRUMBLED to announce I'll be speaking @ The Association of Corgi Physiotherapists about mergers & acquisitions..." etc

They usually TAG the organization who's hiring them, whether it's:

- A professional association
- A yearly conference
- A corporate retreat

Etc.

(Because good speakers know tagging their booker on LinkedIn provides value to them, making them more likely to get re-hired/referred)

When you see a post like this:

CLICK ON THE LITTLE BLUE WORDS, AND FOLLOW THAT ORGANIZATION / EVENT. ➕ 🔔 

You can be pretty certain they pay their speakers if an established pro is speaking there, or at least provides value in other ways.

And now you can:

- research their past events
- learn about future ones
- see if your topic(s) align(s) (grammar)
- connect with people from that org. to build relationships
- and see what other pages are recommended by LinkedIn

Eventually, your feed will be filled (yuck) with events, organizations, and people in the speaking industry, and you'll see what's out there.

And even more eventually (sorry this is a slow process), you'll get:

• inbound opportunities from your content
• and be able to DM the event planners for outreach, once you've built a relationship

Remember: 

Until you're famous, you're gonna have to hustle.

This is an easy way to do it.

In 2 days I'm speaking to one of the biggest speaking coaches in the world (I think I can accurately say that?) Nausheen I. Chen's community!

(Man that grammar was rough. Wish I could edit, too late now though).

I'll be sharing my 3-Act Origin Story framework with The Confidence Accelerator, as well as coaching volunteers, and doing a Q&A.

The 3AOS (as I've affectionately acronymized it) consists of, you guessed it, 3 acts:

1. Childhood Origin 
2. Youth Awakening
3. Adult Choice

You can use this story structure to:

- kick off a presentation with your "WHY"
- introduce yourself in an elevator pitch format
- create a real personal brand (based on your real life) 
- and even deepen your own understanding of your purpose & values

It's my favourite thing ever to talk about, and I'm absolutely THRUMBLED that Nausheen and Cleofe are having me.

I don't like to brag, but I'm lying:

25 students have now signed up for my video course!

That's 25 real adult humans learning, joining the weekly community calls, and "Creating Their Signature Workshop."

And that's not the best part:

(I mean it's the best part for my bank account, but not my warm & fuzzies)

The results have been incredible since we launched on September 1st:

- Tony Haresign booked a talk in Slovenia using the pitching, negotiation & pricing methods from the course.

- Plus he used the Signature Workshop structure to make it interactive (even though it was a keynote) and got asked back for next year!

In less than 24 hours I fly to Panama.

I’m doing 2 workshops over 2 days for an Entrepreneurs'​ Organization retreat, then observing & giving feedback on day 3.

All this would be tiring enough, but there’s also the:

- international travel
- socializing before and after the events
- trying to keep up with my biz
- and wrestling with the massive alligator of guilt I feel for leaving my wife with a toddler, newborn and psychotic Corgi for 4 days 🥲

I’m telling you this because the THEME of my workshops is exactly this:

How do you show up & hold people’s collective attention for hours on end?

Especially in our current hyper-distracted culture, where you’re competing with people’s phones, laptops and wandering thoughts every 7 seconds?

My 2 workshops would say:

1. Use the WAY you speak to command their attention

2. Tell them your story, be funny and vulnerable, and create a space for them to do the same

That’s what I’m working on with EO, and that’s what I’ll be sharing with you over the next few days.

Here are my fave 7 ways to engage an audience:

(From my life as an actor & teacher, plus 8+ years of paid speaking)

1. "Cameras On / Devices Away" 
- Ask for this politely but firmly at the beginning of your talk. Explain why it matters to you. 🎥 

2. "Ask, don't tell" 
- Elicit answers > just giving them. Eg: "The answer is 42" ❌ "Does anyone know what the meaning of life is?" ✅ 

3. "Call out names" 
- I saw Ravi Rajani do this brilliantly during a talk for PORCH 💚. Hearing "Eh, Will?" every 2 minutes kept me LOCKED in 😂 

4. "Get them moving" 
- Movement is energy, change, fun, surprise, all that good stuff. Quick stretch, change seats, etc at LEAST 1-2x during your talk. 🏃‍♂️‍➡️ 

5. "Shout out/Write in the chat __" 
- Ask them to yell/type where they're from, yes/no, how they're feeling etc. Do it whenever you can 🗣️ 

6. "Use the hot seat" 
- Get individuals to step onstage, role-play, volunteer, etc. Audiences LOVE when one of their own is sweating 😅  

7. "Be funny & vulnerable throughout" 
- Seems obvious, or simplistic, but it's all too rare. "Funny" is entertaining, "vulnerable" even more so ❤️ 

Use these techniques for your next virtual OR in-person talk, and I guarantee your feedback will include the word "Engaging!" 🫡

Do it WHILE reading out loud, either from a script or a random book or newspaper.

For some reason, this makes you:

- cooler
- more natural
- more confident
- and provides essential daily nutrients that can apparently keep doctors away

I know it sounds stupid, but it’s one of the best acting exercises I teach my clients to improve their speaking skills.

Try it out while preparing for your next talk, video, or sales call.

Just make sure you don’t become dependent on it for confidence, cause then you’ll be known as that creepy apple guy.

(Or girl. Women can be off-putting weirdos too.)

Sometimes, your stage is just a little one.

And the room you’re speaking to only has 15-20 people, some tables, and a small platform with a projector.

What does that mean for you, as a speaker?

Should you:

A) Relax and deliver your material like you’re hanging out in your living room? 

Or

B) Tap into the same crazy energy you might use on a conference mainstage?

Neither. (In my humble opinion blah blah blah)

You should do the same thing on any stage:

Be LOUD, CLEAR, and EXPRESSIVE ENOUGH to keep people’s ATTENTION;

AND be as natural as you can within that intention.

You don’t have to CHOOSE between “entertaining” and “real.”

You can honour both, because that’s what your audience needs to hear your message.

That’s the theme of my workshop on this stage in 30 minutes time, and of course my intention for myself as the speaker/faciltator.

(So meta, I know 😂)

I met Kay Korsh 🇺🇦🇬🇧 shortly before the birth of my second daughter, 8 weeks ago. 

(Online obviously. Do we even have physical bodies anymore?)

We talked about her 2 kids, and the challenges of raising two vs one, and she told me her story:

She moved from Ukraine to UK and worked with celebrities like Riz Ahmed and Lily James as a fashion consultant, until she had kids. (Kids ruin everything. Just joking hahahah 🥲)

Then she told me about what she does now:

She styles speakers.

Like helps speakers choose what to wear, and show up onstage confident and build a visual brand through wardrobe.

My first thought was - to be very un-Canadian-ly honest and blunt:

"Does this even matter?"

I have NO fashion sense, no style of my own, and I'm a semi-successful (kinda) speaker, right??

So when she asked if I wanted to help promote her masterclasses, I wasn't sure I wanted to say yes.

But I did (as you can probably tell from reading this). And the reasons are:

- She's lovely, passionate, and knows her sh*t 
- She's a speaker herself, so she knows the industry
- But I also think, deep down, I may desperately need her services myself, but am stuck in a limiting belief that dressing nicely is for people who are cooler and better and more adult than me, and consciously choosing what clothes to wear somehow makes me less of a man, or something, I don't even know, but fashion is just out of my comfort zone and I've always avoided it, but isn't that where growth happens and oh shit I'm rambling.

When Caleb Spitler asked me to speak to his community, I was absolutely THRUMBLED (trademark pending). 

He's a true pro, and very clearly knows his sh*t about the speaking industry and stagecraft.

With his lovely group, we talked about:

- Why workshops > keynotes for newer speakers

- The only 5 things you need to for a workshop:

1. A name
2. Your story
3. A big idea (+ proof)
4. A group exercise
5. And a long Q&A

- And who to DM on LinkedIn to find your first corporate workshop gigs, plus what to say in your message

Then, we had 2 volunteers pitch me their workshop idea for feedback, and brainstormed how to structure ot

And as Caleb said, even though people might see us as "competitors":

There are so many conferences, and companies who bring in speakers, that having a "scarcity mindset" makes no sense. 

I always prefer collabing over competiting (grammar).

If you had to go onstage without anything prepared, would you:

A) Ramble a bunch of bullshit
B) Pee yourself and run offstage
C) Get the audience to ask questions and practice something, with feedback from you?
