The first day of Web Summit was genuinely special for me — the kind of moment every executive coach hopes to experience. I had the chance to watch one of my clients shine in real time after months of deep work together.

Being invited by Thiago Verçosa, CEO of Nify, to support him at the event was already an honour. But seeing him pitch, connect, adjust the narrative on the fly, and confidently tailor his message to a European audience… that was powerful.

What made it even more meaningful is knowing the journey behind that performance.

Thiago has faced some tough chapters — personally and professionally. To witness him overcome those challenges, rebuild his self-belief, and step into his influence so naturally was a reminder of why I do this work.

There’s something incredibly fulfilling in seeing a client move from a difficult place to a strong one — and knowing you contributed to that transformation in some way.

And of course, Thiago being Thiago, he didn’t just do well; he went above and beyond. He introduced me to founders from the Maravalley Tech Hub with such generosity that it felt like I had my own PR team walking beside me. He spoke openly about the impact our work had on his leadership, and that meant a lot.

So this post is also a thank you.

Your job title can open doors — or quietly hold you back.
And most people don’t even notice it’s happening.

When I joined RTM years ago, my official title was “People Management Advisor.”

But in reality, I was leading the entire people strategy: payroll, budgeting, culture, leadership development — reporting directly to the CEO.

Those responsibilities were, by every market standard, a CHRO role.
And here’s the thing: this wasn’t an attempt to diminish me.

These were simply old internal titles that had never been updated.
But the moment I saw that title on paper, I knew — as someone in HR — that it could hurt me later.

Because the market doesn’t care what a company decides to call you.
The market cares about the function you actually performed.

And this is where many tech leaders get stuck.

I see it all the time with CTOs, VPs, Heads of Engineering:
They rely on the title they were given instead of checking how the industry interprets what they actually led.

For example:
“CTO” means very different things depending on whether you worked in a startup, a scale-up, or a corporate environment.

If you don’t clarify the scope, stage, or size you operated in, the title alone can misrepresent you — or undersell you.

And in some companies, titles are shaped by internal politics, salary structures, legal constraints… or simply because giving someone a clean, accurate title would require giving them a raise.

So let me ask you this:

✨ What defines your professional identity — the internal label a company gave you, or the way the broader market understands your role? ✨ 

Your title should reflect the reality of your contribution, not the limitations of someone else’s org chart.

And when aligned with the market, it becomes a powerful asset for your future — not a leftover from your past.

 they want more opportunities to connect with other founders and C-levels — but in a space where the conversation feels intentional, not rushed or superficial.
