8 years ago, I told my friend I'd start my business. 

4 years ago, I still hadn't started (FML). Then...

3 years ago, I decided to take the leap.

But...

It's not all rainbows and butterflies. 

- I work more now than I ever did as an employee
- I've made bad decisions that set me back
- I struggle to take a real vacation

Here's the takeaway:

I shouldn't have lied to my friend 8 years ago. 

I should have started the business then. 

I'd probably be:

- Working less
- Taking better decisions
- Finding support to help me

But that's what happens when you wait.

Direct Message (DM)...that's all it takes. 

In fact, that's how I got my first role in Europe. 

I sent a direct message to the CEO here on LinkedIn.

Yes, the CEO of a publicly traded company. 

No, he did not answer, but he read the Direct Message. 

How do I know? 

Soon after, the CRO reached out to me in the DM's. 

A few months later, we sat for breakfast. 

And the rest is history my friends. 

Here's the 5-step process:

1) Locate the company you would like to work with 

2) Search LI to find the decision makers there

3) If they post, engage with the content

4) If not, send a DM & provide value

5) Communicate and be patient

Bonus: Post original content that shows your ability to add value to that industry/company/role…

Plant medicine has always been controversial.

One day, I said f*** it
Enough consumption. Let's post something. 
But I had no writing experience, so here's what I did:
 
1) I leveraged existing content 
 
For example, I would listen to a podcast, then take one topic from it and expand on it.
 
2) I followed other creators on LinkedIn
 
This allowed me to understand different structures and templates so that I could publish something readable.
 
3) I stuck to a topic (niche) I was comfortable with
 
This gave me the confidence to speak about a subject from multiple different perspectives.
 
Now, 5 years later, I have writing experience, which means...

- I don't have to lean on other content for ideas 
 
- I follow creators, but creators follow me
 
- I write for people in different niches
 
All because I started...
 
1) Using other content to help me create my own
2) Using other creators for inspiration
3) Using a topic I knew well
 
Are you ready?

60 days ago, I received a unique like on a post. 
59 days ago, I sent that unique like a DM. 
52 days ago, we spoke on the phone. 

Here's the takeaway:

It was the direct outreach that started a conversation. 

Not the post. 

But without the post, there'd be no lead.
