Entrepreneurship demands the same thing.  

No straight lines. No perfect story.  

Just guts, grind, and grace under pressure.

🤯 I messed up. Big time.

🦃 Gratitude in the Chaos: A Pre-Thanksgiving Reflection

PURE CRISIS MODE. That's what Tuesday morning felt like.

Just days before Thanksgiving, my puppy, Bella, shattered the inside pane of a double-pane window. 

For the SECOND time.

It looked like a crime scene. 

Blood and glass everywhere. 

Pure chaos.

I immediately went into overdrive. 

Split-second decision time.

My biggest fear? Bella's paw. She had a bad cut.

But thankfully, it looked much worse than it was.

I got her to the vet immediately. 

"Emergency! I need you all to drop what you're doing and look at my baby right now!"

Crisis averted. She's going to be just fine! 

Relief.

Why share this wild story?

Because as an entrepreneur, this scenario is eerily familiar.

We constantly face moments of intense pressure and limited information. 

We have to make critical decisions while surrounded by chaos.

We need to understand how and when to bend the rules when things are predictable or
very unpredictable.

It's about the ability to spring into action. 

To stay focused when everything else is spinning. 

To not only find, but BE the calm in the storm.

This Thanksgiving, my list of things to be thankful for is extra long.

I'm thankful for my incredible and mischievous puppy, Bella.

I’m thankful for a vet who knows when I show up it's important and sees me right away. 

And I’m profoundly thankful for the resilience we build when things go wrong.

Things will break. Chaos will happen. It's how you respond that defines the outcome.

I used to think being a good person meant always saying yes.

Always being available.

Always putting others first.

Then I learned something critical:

They're self-preservation.

You can be kind AND have limits.
You can help AND protect your energy.
You can care deeply AND say no.

The people who truly value you will respect your boundaries.

Sustainable generosity requires one thing:

Protecting what makes you able to give in the first place

Your time. Your peace. Your capacity.

Strong boundaries = stronger relationships.

The latest Challenger Report shows job cuts fell sharply in November, and with the Fed meeting this week, many expect a 25 basis point rate cut.

That sounds like good news.

But look closer.

Rate cuts won't save bad deals.
Layoffs don't kill strong investments. They expose weak ones.

A resilient deal is built for stress:
·      Conservative rent growth assumptions
·      Strong reserves
·      A proven operator
·      No reliance on cheap debt refinancing

A fragile deal collapses the moment the economy loses its tailwind.

I spent an hour on a call with a young woman just starting her journey into alternative investing.

Every passive investor fears hearing this. Years ago, I came close to saying it myself.

In one of my early deals, as an operator, the bank threatened takeover multiple times. Vacancy was rising. Cash flow was gone. We weren't sure investors would even get their principal back.

We ultimately exited with capital protected and a small profit. But that only happened after removing a weak partner, and nearly losing the deal.

Here's what went wrong:
We bought a workforce housing asset. The plan: renovate and raise rents. The problem: we overestimated what local tenants could afford.

Leasing stalled. 
The market didn't kill the deal.
The partner did.

Our "boots-on-the-ground" operator:
·      Hid key issues
·      Ignored red flags
·      Failed to execute
·      Withheld critical info

The result? A total breakdown in trust, and operations.

With legal help, we removed him, stabilized the asset, and sold. Had we waited longer, we would have lost everything.

Lesson learned: You're not just investing in a property. You're investing in the people running it.

If you want to reduce risk, ask better questions:
·      Who's really in control?
·      What happens if a partner fails?
·      Can they be removed quickly?

I lived this. It changed how I evaluate every deal.
