Most strategies don’t fail in the boardroom.
They fail because no one outside of the boardroom hears them.

Today it was my honour to support a leadership team in the construction industry launch their 2025 strategy - live, on stage, to 300 people, in Manchester’s Stoller Hall.

My role?
Give the opening keynote. Support the message. Help shape the flow. Be the MC. Ask the questions. Facilitate the conversations. Bring the energy. Help the leadership be clear. Make sure the strategy landed.

The brief was simple but not easy:
“Help our people understand what to focus on in 2026 - why it matters to them, their teams, and our customers.”

The over all theme: customer value - was one close to my heart. We spoke about long term brand and reputation building - and how productivity, time, and clarity drive it in a tougher, more competitive 2026.

It takes real leadership to make this work:
✅ Strategy boiled down to its essence (we unveiled the company “plan on a page” for 2026)
✅ Clear links between ambition and execution
✅ The humility to engage, explain, and energise

One piece of lovely feedback I got stuck with me:
“You brought the energy, Matt.”

But the truth is, the energy came from clarity. From coherence. From leaders doing the hard yards before anyone got in the room.

It was an honour to be involved.

Cue last-minute panic, quick pivot… and thankfully, a brilliant group of 70+ people still showed up live on Zoom 🙏

From cursing the IT gremlins to sharing smart questions around pricing, strategy, value-based fees, and how to shift from “hands” to “brains” — the chat was on fire. 🔥

Today I had the honour of speaking at IGNITE! 26 at Kelham Hall – The Disruptive Business Event – and what a day it was!

My talk, “Dare To Be Different”, explored how too many businesses fall into the brand trap – copying the category leader, blending into the crowd, and losing what makes them meaningfully different . One business leader even came up to me afterwards and said:
“Oww, you got me there – I’m in the brand trap for sure.”

That’s the power of brand strategy done right. It’s not about shouting louder. It’s about standing for something only you can offer. Not “we’re the best X”, but “we’re the only X that does Y” .

Good brand building starts with visionary leadership.

This morning I’ve had a thrilling time facilitating a workshop with the Equity Partners of a London law firm on a growth trajectory.

We have been working on what excellence looks like - especially for the leaders within their firm.

This the kind of work most leadership teams avoid but it can add a huge amount of value - especially when the most senior team is aligned on what good looks like and the brand and culture they need to build and nurture to be successful in their space.

This was about stepping back to look at how leadership actually shows up inside the business.

The themes will feel familiar to any business owner or senior leader:
	•The gap between leadership intent and lived experience
	•The difference between individual excellence and organisational consistency
	•Where accountability creates momentum - and where it quietly creates drag
	• Why “middle leaders” carry far more influence than most organisations admit
	• And how quickly standards slip when clarity is assumed rather than reinforced

For me what made the session powerful wasn’t answers or solutions.

It was the willingness to ask better questions:
	• What do we expect from leaders in practice?
	• Where are we relying on goodwill instead of clarity?
	• And where is the business working despite the system, not because of it?

My role in rooms like this isn’t to tell leaders what to do.
It’s to slow things down, surface the real tensions, and help teams build shared language and alignment around what good actually looks like.

The outputs of this workshop will influence quite a bit of activity ahead - from staff surveys to training and to a leadership offsite next month.

If you’re a business owner scaling beyond yourself, this moment matters more than any plan.

Because culture, standards, and leadership behaviour don’t scale accidentally.

They have to be designed - and then owned.

I’m mid-way through a strategy offsite right now in central London and the energy is 🔥

What really stood out wasn’t just the strategy (which is 🔥) - it was the care they’re putting into how they share it.

The conversation was all about their people:

Seeing a leadership team take this responsibility around comms  so seriously is genuinely refreshing and so needed.
