Byzacia oil owes its reputation both to the cultivation of the olive tree, Byzacium, which is rooted in the ancient history of Central Tunisia, and to the know-how acquired by the region over the ages in the production of extra-virgin quality oil.
Initiated by Hannibal on his return from Italy in 202 BJC, olive cultivation rapidly supplanted that of cereals in Byzacene. 
The capital of Byzacium, Hadrumète (Sousse), owes its administrative position to its economic importance, which itself stems from olive growing. 
As early as the 1st century, under Vespasian, the Lex Manciana law, which regulated the relationship between landowners and farmers who cultivated olive groves, led to the prosperity of the whole of Bysacium, with its farmers, landowners, bankers, usurers and exporters who built wealthy residences in the new districts of Hadrumetum, behind the port and to the south of the town. All this wealth testifies to the importance and quality of the product that is olive oil and from which the unique flavour of our Byzacia products now derives.
