Serving "business owners" made me broke.

Meanwhile some 24-year-old who only helped physiotherapy clinics with their Google ads was booking three clients a week.

Less experience. Worse writer. Better business.

I was trying to be everything to everyone whilst they became the obvious choice for someone specific.

Then I read one sentence that slapped me awake.

"Split your focus, split your progress."

Sat there like a proper muppet.

I'd been saying I serve "business owners" - which is like saying you serve "people with problems." Congratulations mate, that's everyone with a pulse.

Energy is finite.

Spread it across ten targets and you make pathetic progress on all of them. Aim it at one thing and you actually move forward.

I was getting walked over. Not because I wasn't good enough. Because "business owners" aren't a niche and speaking to everyone means speaking to nobody.

The person who serves SaaS founders with 10-50 employees will steamroll the person who serves "entrepreneurs."

Every single time.

Not because they're more talented. They're just not trying to dig ten shallow holes with the same shovel.

That specific person can talk about specific problems. Cap table drama. Series A preparation. Scaling from 10 to 50 without imploding.

They speak the language their client thinks in.

Meanwhile I was still explaining what I did in three paragraphs because I was trying to include everyone.

Pick one thing. Get uncomfortably specific. Watch what happens when you stop hedging your bets.

I used to think commitment meant picking one thing. Then Vietnam got greylisted, and I couldn't get paid.

FATF grey list. Fintech accounts frozen. Six weeks without income.

I had to scramble to move operations. Got distracted. Stopped doing regular outreach.

Now my pipeline has holes in it.

And here's what I realised sitting in that mess:

Focus is easy to talk about. Everyone quotes "the man who chases two rabbits catches neither."

But that's not the hard part.

The hard part is what happens when you can't access your money for six weeks. When you've got to sell things. When you're burning through savings. When the systems you built stop working.

Most people give themselves an exit. "I'll try this for six months." "I'll see how it goes."

That's why they quit.

Because when things break - and they will break - there's a door marked "reasonable decision to stop."

Real commitment is closing that door.

It's saying "no matter what happens, I'm not leaving." No clients for a year? Still here. Bank accounts frozen? Find another way. Pipeline empty? Fill it again.

Once you decide you're not quitting, you can't actually fail.

You might take longer. You might take hits. You might have to rebuild parts of it.

But eventually, you get there.

Because you're still in the game.

I used to think good salespeople could convince anyone of anything. 

Turns out, the best ones don't convince at all – they just help people decide for themselves. 

Convincing feels like a fight. Helping feels calm. 

And people can tell the difference straight away.

My prospect could tell I was lying.

I was asking questions like someone learning to dance from YouTube. Then showing up to the club completely off rhythm. 

They'd answer something real. I'd already stopped listening.

One-two-three, pain point. One-two-three, budget question. One-two-three, urgency check.

Perfect choreography for a dance nobody asked me to perform.

Spent an hour researching their company before the call, stalked their LinkedIn, and prepared questions designed to lead them exactly where I needed them to go.

Which happened to be toward the problems my service solved.

Funny how that works.

They'd say "We're doing fine with our current approach" and my brain heard "Let me convince you that you're wrong."

The calls ended the same way every time.

"This is really interesting. Let me think about it."

Translation: You were so busy performing you forgot I'm a human.

Something was wrong when calls left me exhausted instead of energised.

Like finishing a workout instead of having a conversation.

Because that's what happened. Working harder than the prospect.

The shift wasn't dramatic. No lightning bolt moment.

Just started noticing when counting steps instead of feeling the music.

Mid-call caught myself waiting for them to finish so I could say my clever thing.

Started actually stopping. Asking questions without a script.

"Wait, what do you mean by that?"

"Why does that matter to you?"

Some calls hit the twenty-minute mark and there was no real problem.

"Honestly, I don't think you need what I do. You're handling this fine."

Those calls didn't close. 

Obviously.

The ones with real problems became different conversations entirely.

They'd start asking me questions. We'd go off script. The hour would disappear.

Closed more of those than ever did with perfect questions.

People can tell when you're listening to respond versus listening to understand.

Same way they can tell when someone's dancing to impress versus dancing because they feel the music.

You can learn the steps. But if you're not present in the moment, you're just performing.

And prospects can smell a performance from the first question.

Discipline isn't about never messing up. 

It's about how quickly you get back on with it when you do. 

Because everyone falls off sometimes.
