“Who would have thought when I watched England v Ireland the day before my first chemotherapy session, that the next time I watched them play rugby, I would be refereeing a showcase match beforehand...I simply can't wait!” 

When England took on Ireland at Twickenham in 2018, lifelong rugby fan Alastair had just received the devastating news that he had mantle cell lymphoma - a rare form of blood cancer. 

“My world stopped. There would be hope, but no promises…” 

By his side that day was his close friend Scott, who said: “I genuinely thought I’d never see him again. We both cried - whether it was the news, England losing to Ireland, or the many pints of Guinness, who knows...” 

Since then, Alastair has undergone two stem cell transplants, including one from a selfless donor who helped save his life. After relapsing in late 2022, ongoing treatment is currently keeping his condition at bay. 

This April, Alastair and Scott will take on the London Marathon, running 26.2 miles together to raise awareness of stem cell donation and to support vital research that helps people just like Alastair. 

“I must stress, I am NOT a runner. Rugby, yes, but running? No! This challenge is taking me physically and mentally to new places. But to think that my marathon running could help get someone onto the register, who in turn helps people with blood cancer - that is a real driving force for me.” 

This weekend, Alastair will be taking a brief break from marathon training as he visits Twickenham once again, this time as a referee, officiating the girls showcase match ahead of the England v Ireland Six Nations game. 

If you're watching this weekend's game, picture this: if everyone at Twickenham told one mate about the stem cell register, another 80,000 people could potentially join the register, ready to give someone like Alastair a second chance at life.
