Everyone uses Facebook but only a few know the tech stack Mark Zuckerberg used to build it in 2004.



When Facebook launched at Harvard, it was built fast, cheap, and smart using simple but powerful tools.

​1. Programming Language - PHP

• Core backend was written in PHP
• Chosen because it was:
 – Easy to learn
– Perfect for rapid web development
– Great for handling forms & dynamic pages

​2. Database - MySQL

• Used MySQL to store: 
– User profiles
– Friend relationships
– Messages & posts
• Relational DB worked well because early Facebook was mostly structured data.

​3. Web Server - Apache

• Ran on Apache HTTP Server
• Standard choice in 2004 for PHP-based sites
• Reliable, open-source, and easy to deploy on shared servers.

​4. Frontend - HTML + CSS + Basic JavaScript 

• No React, no frameworks
• Simple HTML pages
• Minimal JavaScript for basic interactivity
• Focus was speed and usability, not fancy UI.

​5. Hosting - Linux Servers

• Ran on Linux
• Cheap, stable, and perfect for open-source tools
• Mark rented a single managed server.

​6. Version Control - None (at launch)

• Git didn’t exist yet (launched in 2005)
• Mark initially just updated files via FTP.

​Tech stack doesn’t make a startup successful.
