Originally from New Zealand, now based in Warsaw, I have lived in five countries and worked in 10, leading senior teams for companies and clients such as Ogilvy, Accenture, and Microsoft. 

This experience has given me a unique understanding of both the Polish and the Anglo-American perspective, and the challenges of working across cultures. 

Polish and Anglo-American styles of business are quite different. Problem-solving, collaboration, and business communication are just some of the areas where cultural contrasts cause issues. 

Many Polish executives have told me they are frustrated at not getting the results they want when working with international clients or colleagues.

The good news is that we can fix this.

For 5 years I led Better for Business (B4B) at MBIE - a cross-agency programme focused on making it easier and more seamless for businesses to deal with government.

B4B focuses on the wider government ecosystem, bringing together the 10+ agencies businesses most often deal with. Through providing deep insights into the painpoints Kiwi businesses have, we were able to identify opportunities to streamline how government services are delivered. We brought together policy, service design, ops and tech teams to incubate a number of cross-agency digital government initiatives that significantly reduced the administrative cost of compliance on those businesses and increase digital capabilities. 

During my time I was involved with three successful budget bids and securing a $2m DIA Service Innovation Fund, enabling us to establish Business Connect and Digital Boost, as well as permanent ongoing funding for B4B. In 2021 the Public Service Commission awarded us the Spirit of Service Excellence Award, which recognises the positive impact these initiatives have achieved for the benefit of New Zealanders.

At the time of my departure, over 47,000 people were participating in the Digital Boost programme.

WorkSafe New Zealand

My role was to transform how WorkSafe engaged with the small business community to support and enable attitude and behaviour change with respect to health and safety practices. This involved applying human-centered design techniques to provide insight into the characteristics and motivations of small business owners; their drivers, barriers and needs for health and safety information, education and support; and identifying the internal process changes required to achieve these outcomes.

Drawing on my customer behaviour and channel strategy experience, my team and I implemented an innovative multi-channel change programme, which enabled businesses to engage with WorkSafe and broader government business support channels (such as business.govt.nz) in a more relevant, customer-centric way. It was through delivering on these outcomes that I was invited to lead the Better for Business team at MBIE.
