Claude didn’t crash because it failed. It crashed because demand outpaced infrastructure.



Over the weekend, Anthropic’s Claude surged to #1 on Apple’s U.S. free app charts — surpassing ChatGPT. By Monday morning, it experienced widespread outages due to “unprecedented demand. At the same time, Anthropic is reportedly clashing with the U.S. Department of Defense over restrictions on mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.

Here’s why I’m paying attention to this right now. Not because of uptime. Not because of rankings. But because of what it signals. This is no longer just a product moment. It’s a pressure test.

When infrastructure buckles, we notice. When human judgment quietly erodes, we don’t. What I see happening in real time: Adoption curves are vertical. Ethical guardrails are being negotiated mid-flight. Organizational dependency is rising faster than strategic clarity. The real vulnerability isn’t downtime...it’s cognitive drift.

If companies integrate AI faster than they define decision rights, accountability, and ethical constraints, the model begins shaping direction by default. Not intentionally. Systemically. That’s the part leaders should be studying.

Three signals I believe matter right now:
• Popularity doesn’t equal maturity. Market excitement is not governance.
• Speed doesn’t equal readiness. Integration without clarity scales confusion.
• Intelligence doesn’t equal intent. Models optimize. Leaders define purpose.

So the question I’m sitting with this week is simple:
Are we scaling AI faster than we’re scaling discernment?

Because in this next phase, advantage won’t go to the fastest adopters.
It will go to the clearest decision architects. Remember, AI doesn’t reduce leadership responsibility... it raises the bar for it. And the outage I’m watching most closely isn’t technical. It’s what happens when judgment lags behind capability.

I saw this meme today and couldn’t stop laughing… not because it’s funny — but because it’s true.

On the LEFT: Automation. Reliability. ROI. Scalability.
(You know… the unsexy things that actually solve business problems.)

On the RIGHT: AI Agents. Hallucinations. Cost. Hype.
(But hey — they sound cool in board meetings.)

And just like in real life, everyone is lined up for the shiny thing that promises magic… while ignoring the thing that actually works. Here’s the punchline:
It’s not an AI problem. It’s a leadership problem.

After coaching thousands of leaders, building global EI programs, and helping companies design their “AI-ready” cultures, I’ve learned this:

👉 Most organizations don’t have an AI strategy problem. They have a leadership maturity problem.

They chase tools before clarity. Outputs before outcomes. Hype before habits.
Capability before conversation. Because here’s the truth, no one wants to say out loud:

Your AI strategy is only as strong as the conversations your managers can lead.
If your leaders can’t think, listen, coach, regulate emotion, navigate ambiguity, or articulate direction… no model, no agent, no automation will save you.

AI amplifies what already exists. Strong leaders become stronger. Weak leadership becomes visible — fast. So while everyone is racing to stand in the “AI AGENT” line… I’m betting on something else:

• Human Intelligence.
• Emotional Intelligence.
• Leadership that scales trust, not hallucinations.
• Accountability that outperforms automation.
• Teams that can actually talk to each other.

Because the future won’t belong to the companies with the most AI agents —
It will belong to the companies with the strongest leaders using them well.

AI isn’t a technology gap. It’s a leadership gap.
And that’s exactly where the real work begins.

AI job postings are surging 134% since 2020. The job market is not.



Here's what most leaders are misreading:

According to Reworked and The Brookings Institution, AI now appears in 4.2% of U.S. job listings, but total job postings are only ~6% above pre-pandemic levels. 1.4 million fewer jobs added in 2025 than the prior year and 90% of AI job postings come from just 1% of companies.

That's not a hiring boom. That's concentration. And concentration changes the leadership equation.

When leaders interpret AI job postings as proof of economic strength, three things happen: 
→ Optics replace outcomes 
→ Hiring outpaces workforce redesign 
→ AI becomes a signal of innovation — not capability

The narrative becomes: "We're hiring for AI." The harder question is: "Have we redesigned the system around it?" Because AI hiring without AI integration is branding — not transformation.

Before posting the AI role, ask:
• Where will this capability live inside the organization?
• What decisions will change because of it?
• How will the rest of the workforce adapt?
• Are we building literacy — or just specialists?

AI jobs aren't the strategy. Workforce architecture is.

The companies that win won't have the most AI job postings. They'll be the ones who: 
➤ Align hiring with system-wide capability
➤ Tie AI roles to measurable operational change
➤ Invest in workforce literacy alongside specialist talent
➤ Separate hype from readiness

AI hiring is easy to signal. AI integration is hard to lead. And in the AI era, the leaders who differentiate won't be the loudest. They'll be the clearest.

United Airlines just turned basic decency into official policy.  



Apparently, we’ve reached a point in society where “please don’t blast TikToks at 35,000 feet” needed to be written into a Contract of Carriage. United updated its rules to require passengers to wear headphones for audio or video content, and passengers who refuse can now be removed from a flight and potentially banned. 

That’s not a travel policy story. That’s a leadership story. Because the moment an organization has to formalize what should already be obvious, it means culture has lost to entitlement. We are living in an era where common sense needs legal language and courtesy needs enforcement. And self-awareness is apparently now a premium feature.

Here's the craziest part - United didn’t create a headphone policy. They created a consequences policy for people who missed kindergarten and for how to behave (think "criss-cross-applesauce"). 

Leaders should pay attention. When standards go unstated, the most inconsiderate people set them for everyone else. On planes. In meetings. On teams. Inside companies.

The lesson is simple: If you have to keep saying, “People should just know better,” you waited too long to make the standard clear. Culture is not what you hope people do. Culture is what you are willing to define and enforce.

United just reminded us: The fastest way to improve a shared environment
is to stop assuming maturity and start clarifying expectations. Noise-canceling headphones are great. Noise-canceling leadership is better.
