That question is way messier than most people think.

I see this all the time: a founder gets hyped about their next big idea. The first thing they want? "Let's build an app!"

But here’s the problem, most businesses don’t need an app at all

They jump in with both feet, burn through time and cash, then realize there was a simpler (and smarter) way...

Here’s what I see go wrong, over and over:

→ Building a custom app before proving anyone even wants what you’re offering
→ Wasting months (and a chunk of your runway) on features nobody uses
→ Forgetting that every new app is fighting for a tiny spot on someone’s already crowded home screen
→ Assuming an app magically builds customer loyalty (It doesn’t!)

Here’s what works instead:

- Start small
- Test your idea with a landing page, a waitlist, even a hacked-together prototype
- If users are tripping over themselves to get involved, then maybe it’s time to talk about an app

Here’s the real secret to building scalable platforms, it’s not the tech, it’s the people and the vibe you create inside

After years of building and scaling platforms for startups, I’ve learned one thing:

It’s not about the technology, it’s about the people behind it

Yeah, replatforming and digital makeovers are tricky, no doubt. But the real magic happens when leadership gets that change starts from within.

They build a culture that’s hungry for innovation and tough enough to handle setbacks.

No matter how fancy your platform is, it’s only going to succeed if the team truly believes in the vision

And honestly, that’s the hardest part.

Creating a resilient, innovative culture? It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

But if you do it right, the platform will take care of itself.

I lost a $350k deal because I raised my rates.

Here's what I learned.

Background:

Client: Fast-growing SaaS startup (marketplace category)
Relationship: 18 months
Monthly retainer: $12,000
New proposal: $25,000/month

I thought I was being reasonable.

My rates hadn't increased in 18 months.
My skill level had 3x'd.
Market rates for similar work: $25-35k/month.

I sent the proposal with confidence.

Their response: "We're shutting down operations."

Not "that's too expensive."
Not "can we negotiate?"

Just... done.
I called immediately.

Them: "Ken, we love your work. But we can't justify $25k/month."

Me: "What if we kept it at $12k?"

Them: "It's too late. We've already made the decision."

The real reason?

They were barely profitable.
$12k/month was already stretching them.
$25k/month broke the camel's back.

But here's what I did wrong:

1. Didn't understand their unit economics
2. Didn't see the warning signs (slower payments, reduced scope requests)
3. Raised rates without context or warning
4. Assumed they could afford it because they'd been paying

I lost the client.
I lost $144k/year in recurring revenue.
I lost a strong portfolio piece.

But I learned:

Raise rates on NEW clients.
Grandfather existing clients.
Or: Raise gradually (20-30% per year, not 100%+ overnight).

4 months later, they shut down completely.

Founder told me: "The $25k proposal forced us to look at our numbers. We weren't going to make it. Winding down was the right call."

Silver lining: I helped them see reality sooner.

But I could have handled it better:

What I should have said:
"Hey [Client], I'd love to continue at $12k, but I need to focus on larger engagements to scale my business. Can we plan a 90-day transition? I'll help you find an excellent replacement and ensure a smooth handoff."

What I actually said:

"My new rate is $25k/month effective next quarter."

One was generous and thoughtful.
One was transactional and abrupt.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Raising rates is necessary for growth.
But HOW you do it matters.

Especially with clients who:
- Took a chance on you early
- Gave you portfolio work when you needed it
- Referred you to others
- Trusted you with their core product

They deserve better than a rate-hike email.

What I do now instead:

For existing clients:
- Grandfather them at current rates
- Or: Give 6 months notice with gradual increases
- Or: Offer to help transition to someone in their budget range

For new clients:
- Start at premium rates from Day 1
- No need to raise later
- They self-select based on budget fit

Higher rates on fewer, better-fit clients beats lower rates on more, struggling clients.

But the transition matters.
Don't burn bridges with the people who believed in you first.

Have you ever lost a client over pricing?

High IQ might be the most underrated poverty trap in modern life. I didn’t live the story I’m about to tell you; I read it, but I’ve seen the same pattern up close. I used to work at Columbia University. Some of the smartest people I’ve ever met were also some of the brokest. The story just put language to something I’d watched for years.

It goes like this:

A guy with a 172 IQ. Ridiculously sharp. Reads philosophy for fun. Understands complex systems better than people with elite MBAs.

And he’s broke.

He spends his days researching, refining ideas, waiting for the “right moment” to execute. Drowning in strategy. Reading “best SaaS ideas” blogs is like homework. Three years “building in stealth”… which means nothing has shipped.

Meanwhile, someone else took one of his half-baked ideas he mentioned in passing, packaged it with conviction, pointed it toward a hungry market, and built a $12k/month business in 90 days 

The product was mid.
The idea was mid.
The execution speed wasn’t.

While the genius is polishing version 1.0, the operator is cashing deposits from version 0.3 built in a weekend.

And the psychology is brutal:

Intelligence creates infinite optionality.
Optionality creates hesitation.
Hesitation creates poverty.

Smart people see every possible failure mode, so they “research more.”

Operators see one path forward and run it.

A brilliant idea in the hands of an overthinker becomes a mental prison.
A mediocre idea in the hands of an executor becomes a money machine.

Ideas without execution are just expensive hobbies for people terrified of looking stupid.

That’s the trap:
- Smart people protect their identity of being smart
- Shipping something imperfect feels like a threat, so they delay forever.

Operators ship ugly.
- They learn from the market.
- They iterate.
- They get paid while improving.

You don’t need perfect. You need velocity and conviction.

Confidence has always outperformed intelligence in the marketplace.

The genius keeps theorizing.
The operator keeps cashing checks.

Execution speed is the whole game

Ever wonder how a small bug can threaten your entire product?

Recently, we caught a location search input bug in one of our clients' products. It was caused by something outside our control. Google changed the rules overnight.

We had automated tests for our code, but we didn’t have an end to end test to catch this kind of issue. When the bug appeared, it took us some time to fix it. But then I realized, if we had E2E tests in place, we could’ve caught it earlier.

Yes, E2E testing can slow down initial development. It’s a tradeoff. But it also massively increases your product’s dependability. And for startups, dependability can be the difference between scaling smoothly or chasing chaos.

In this wave, specialization and exclusivity are your only real weapons. Stay focused, stay differentiated, or be prepared to be swallowed whole by the giants.

I used to believe it, too. Early on, I thought my job was to be the smartest person in the room. To solve every problem, to never show doubt.

Some of the best decisions I’ve made started with, "I don’t know. What do you think?"
