I recently became aware of an incident at the Event Production Show where a couple of speakers commented that freelancers are generally “underskilled and overpaid.” 

I have since seen several posts about it on LinkedIn, and the comment reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of how our industry actually operates.

Freelancers are often the professionals who step in when timelines are tight, budgets are real, and expectations are sky high. 

They bring specialized expertise, deep field experience, and the ability to execute under pressure without the safety net of a full-time role. 

That is not overpaid. That is value on demand.

For many small and growing event businesses, freelancers are not a luxury. 

They are essential infrastructure. 

They allow teams to scale intelligently, serve clients at a higher level, and deliver complex programs without carrying unnecessary overhead year round.

Are there varying skill levels in the freelance market? Of course. 

That is true in every corner of this industry. 

But broad, dismissive statements ignore the very real impact skilled freelancers make every single day behind the scenes of successful events.

Most event planners are excellent at execution.

Ten years ago, you could impress attendees with a nice venue, good food, and a speaker who knew how to hold a microphone.

What does that actually look like?

It means you stop starting with logistics and start with the outcome.

What should people feel when they walk in?

What should they say about the event two weeks later?

Then you design the event around that.

Maybe the keynote becomes a conversation instead of a speech.

Maybe the networking isn’t random mingling but curated small groups where people actually talk.

Maybe the room layout changes so attendees face each other instead of staring at a stage for eight hours.

Maybe the agenda includes moments that let people pause, reset, or step outside for fresh air so they can actually stay present during the day.

These decisions change the entire experience.

Most planners are still focused on timelines, vendors, and seating charts. All important. 

But those things don’t create a moment people remember.

Experience design does.

And when you start thinking this way, your role shifts. 

Clients see you differently. 
They start bringing you in earlier. 
They trust your perspective more.
