No-one has asked, but here’s my two pence on the Product Management market at the moment

The strongest PMs I meet seem to be strong wherever they land. Different products, industries, teams… the backdrop changes, but their core capability doesn’t. Strong product thinking, with decent judgement and instincts, and the ability to keep a team pointing in the same direction.

Yet a lot (and I mean a lot) of hiring briefs I’m getting are becoming more and more specific. Super niche domains, exact system experience, particular journeys etc... it feels like hiring managers are looking for someone that has worked almost exactly on the product they’ll be coming in to manage.

But from what I see day-to-day, a genuinely good PM can ramp into a new environment far quicker than people expect. Sure – there are some areas that are extremely niche and need a lot of background expertise… but they’re more the rarity. 

Cue cheesy end to the post to tie in a relevant photo  but.... a great PM is a bit like an evergreen tree - they stay steady, no matter what environment they’re planted in.
