It’s a tricky time to be a freelance developer right now.

AI coding is making it easier for anyone to build their app, from basic stuff to production-ready software.

Now many potential clients have the awkward question of whether they could build it themselves. Or they might ask a slightly technical nephew to do it.

Think about it like photography. When DSLR cameras became widely available, more people could take professional-looking photos at home. There was a phase when some photographers found it harder to secure work. Over time the novelty wore off and professionals continued to find work.

Here’s what I think:

I expect there will be more pushback on general freelance dev pricing, with clients asking whether it is really worth it.

There is also a larger opportunity. 

More people will discover this territory and build things themselves. And these people will need help with the second stage:

✅ Support
✅ Refactors
✅ Fixes
✅ Updates

It’s likely the overall market size will grow.

We're hosting another Create With meetup in London this Thursday all about AI, software and automations!

Two expert speakers are joining us and I can't wait to learn from them.

It'll also be a good chance for me and James to bounce ideas and work on our strategy.

We're asking some big questions:
- How can we drive more impact?
- What will Create With look like over the coming year?

I don't know the answer yet. But we'll have fun figuring it out.

For all the criticism boilerplates get, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

I've used my own boilerplate on every project. And it's saved me a lot of time.

The benefits compound.

The more I use it, the more I improve it. The quicker I get at building.

For client projects, this means saving them loads of time and money (since I'm much faster).

Plus, the template gets tested more and more over time by users of my apps and by users of my clients’ apps.

This makes it more and more robust.

If I get to a point where I'm building full SaaS products with AI-generated code, I'd use a boilerplate for that too.

They make so much sense.

AI + visual development has quietly created the biggest arbitrage in tech right now.

The developer who lives on Product Hunt feels like every idea has been done.

But the hotel worker? The dentist? The architect?

They’re surrounded by inefficiencies every single day, and now they finally have tools to build prototypes without asking permission.

The biggest advantage isn’t technical skill, it’s proximity to a boring workflow no one else is paying attention to.

That’s where software opportunity lives now.
