Yet people still bought them. Not because they were powerful, but because they represented possibility. That early investment marked the start of the consumer tech revolution, when owning a computer signaled curiosity, ambition and a willingness to bet on the future.

Everyone laughs at the future before they need it.

In 1995, Bill Gates appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to talk about something called “the internet.”
Letterman mocked it. The crowd laughed.

Gates calmly explained that people would be able to publish information, send electronic mail, create their own homepages and connect with others who shared their interests.
To the audience, it sounded unnecessary and overhyped.
