When I was a Business Development Director — and during my time building in the steel business — I realised something most B2B teams still don’t understand:

India runs on relationships, not funnels.

Yet everyone hides behind:
“Quick intro call?”
“Just 15 minutes?”
“Sharing our deck.”

Here’s what actually works:

1️⃣ Be clear about intent.
If I’m reaching out to a founder, I say it upfront — I want to understand your business model and explore real synergy. Not pitch blindly.

2️⃣ Meet in person whenever possible.
Offer coffee. Lunch. Sit across the table.
Trust builds faster over chai than over Calendly.

3️⃣ Stop making it about your product.
20% product.
80% them — their journey, margins, ROI, competitors, unit economics.

Most B2B professionals operate like consultants.
Surface-level insight. Polished decks. Buzzwords.

I prefer a founder mindset.

A founder mindset means:
• You study their competitors before the meeting.
• You understand how they make money.
• You know where they are bleeding cash.
• You talk risk, not just upside.
• You’re okay telling them what NOT to do.

When you speak like someone who understands payroll pressure, credit cycles, cash flow anxiety — you stop sounding like a vendor.

You start sounding like a partner. The Indian market is not a red ocean.

It’s a relationship economy.

And if you can’t build real conversations, no CRM in the world will save your pipeline.

Recently, someone we work with apologised for “overstepping.”

There is no overstepping when you’re hired for expertise.

As a founder, your job is not to have all the answers.
Your job is to set the vision — and then bring in people who know more than you in specific areas.

But here’s the discipline most people miss:

You don’t listen to everyone.
You listen to the right people — in the right lanes.

I draw the line clearly:

• Vision, values, brand core → Non-negotiable.
• Strategy, execution, optimisation → Open to challenge.

Ego protects ideas.
Leadership protects outcomes.

Not every opinion deserves influence.
But informed pushback is oxygen for growth.

If your experts feel the need to apologise for doing their job,
you’re building around control — not scale.

And control doesn’t build companies.
Clarity and trust do.

No one prepares you for that switch.

Here are 7 rules that help me stay sane — whether you’re building a company or just owning your role:

1. Timebox ruthlessly.
Don’t write a to-do list. Write a time map.

2. Protect deep work with buffers.
30-minute gaps between heavy tasks = mental reset.

3. Unblock. Don’t micromanage.
Stop asking, “Is it done?”
Start asking, “What’s blocking you?”

4. Batch your brain.
Creative with creative. Analytical with analytical.
Context switching is silent burnout.

5. Define one daily non-negotiable.
One task that moves the needle — no matter what catches fire.

6. Write sharper briefs.
Clarity upfront saves ego and hours later.

7. Schedule your life.
Gym. Family. Self-time.
If it’s not on the calendar, it’s optional.

Here’s the math most founders ignore:

15 minutes of clarity saves 3 hours of correction.
30 minutes of buffer saves 12 hours of burnout.
1 meaningful task daily = 365 wins a year.

You don’t “master” time in a startup.
You get ruthless about your energy.

If you want 9–5 stability, protect your hours.
If you’re building 0→1, protect your focus.
