Managing the Tech Transfer of antibody technology platforms into LifeArc (transgenic mice, B cell sorting and screening, and in silico bioinformatics for candidate selection) ensuring all facilities, equipment and resources in place to optimise use for therapeutic discovery.

Senior Research Biologist

Karen Skinner is Chief Project & Portfolio Officer at the medical research organisation, LifeArc with accountability for their portfolio of Translational Challenges. These ambitious programmes focus primarily on Rare Disease (including ultra-rare diseases, MND and rare dementias, rare respiratory conditions and childhood cancer), and Global Health. In addition to her role at LifeArc, Karen is a Board Trustee of the Epilepsy Society and member of PIPMG Executive team. 

She has over 30 years of experience within the life sciences industry, having held numerous leadership roles in blue chip big pharma, specialty pharma, biotech and nonprofit organisations. 
She is passionate about biomedical science and technology, applying that knowledge to create innovative products that make a real difference for patients. She believes that collaboration is the key to accelerate the progress of scientific discoveries to create medical breakthroughs that transform the lives of those living with disease.

Working in the field of interventional oncology with innovative medical device therapies. Building and developing SIRT (selective internal radiation therapy) for liver cancer at key centres. This loco-regional therapy has been used mainly in intermediate to advanced disease with good results though increasingly there is significant interest in its use in the curative setting with the aim of downstaging to resection or transplant, or as a bridging strategy for patients on the transplant list. 

Developing and Growing drug eluting beads for Trans Arterial Chemo Embolisation (TACE) for both HCC and metastatic liver cancer, including the recent launch of the first radio-opaque drug eluting bead.

I started caretaking this role in August 2017 and was initially responsible for UK, Ireland & Nordics and then later just UK & Ireland.  In this role I have developed and built a high performing team who always deliver, this is a team not only direct reports but distributors too.  Currently accountable for the innovative BTG Interventional Oncology portfolio consisting of, Chemo- embolics, SIRT and Cryo-ablation, these are new and growing therapies requiring new business, business development, account management  and clinical support skills.

This is a fast paced company with constantly changing, growing products and focus, requiring the ability to effectively manage change while maintaining focus and drive, which is something I love.

Member of the core team leading and driving an initiative using viral change methods to foster positive behaviours and culture within the business.
