What ₹15 crore taught me about accountability in business.

And it made me think… why is this so rare outside of headlines?
Imagine this standard in our world.

But that almost never happens.

Campaign fails?
Founder burns cash.
Agency moves on to the next client.
Or take formulation work.

A formulator builds something, it doesn’t deliver the expected outcome.
Does anyone say:
“This didn’t perform as claimed. I’m refunding my fees.”
Rare. Very rare.

Somehow, accountability is always positioned downstream —
The brand should take the hit.

The founder should absorb the loss.
The system just shrugs.
That’s why this gesture — whether symbolic or real — matters.
Not because ₹15 crore is small.
But because owning outcomes is even rarer.
We talk endlessly about performance.
About results.
About growth.

But performance without accountability is just noise.

I genuinely wish more ecosystems worked like this;

Where confidence in your work also meant skin in the game.

Where promises weren’t just slides and numbers, but shared risk.

Maybe then founders wouldn’t feel so alone when things don’t work.

Maybe trust would return faster than invoices.

Accountability shouldn’t be heroic.

It should be normal.

And when it shows up, even once,  it deserves to be noticed.

The nights before launch, founders don't sleep.

Not because of fear.

Because of memory.

at the time i wrote this post, it was 1 AM - and I was wide awake.

Every scene from the last 18 months were playing on repeat.

The godown we turned into an office.

Sitting without a fan for two months because we weren't sure we'd stay.

The endless debates with Nikhil about which ingredients made the cut.

Not what sounded good.

What actually worked.

There were moments I wasn't fully present.

My son Arihaan asking to go out while I was lost in formulation battles, manufacturing delays, and regulatory puzzles.

I wasn't always there - and that's something I'll carry forever.

But this wasn't just a business.

This was a mission.

Just What Works™ is launching soon.

And I'm feeling everything at once.

Anxiety. Excitement. Gratitude.

Gratitude for Nikhil, who never let us settle.

Gratitude for the struggle, because it sharpened our clarity.

Gratitude that we built something on biological logic, not marketing noise.

Here's what I've learned:

Building something meaningful requires sacrifice.

But it also requires conviction that what you're building will genuinely help people.

Not because you said so.

Because the science does.

To every founder sitting in an uncomfortable space right now, wondering if it'll be worth it:

It will.

The godown becomes an office.

The sleepless nights become launch days.

And the obsession becomes impact.

Stay focused. Stay honest.

And build something that actually works.

The world doesn't need more noise.

It needs more integrity.

Everyone told me this was a stupid decision.

After a failed venture, I chose to enter the nutraceutical space.

People laughed — politely.

“This market is already cluttered.”

“Big foreign brands can’t crack India, you think you will?”

“Why burn your hands again?”

And honestly… they weren’t wrong.

From the outside, it did look foolish.

No background in health.

No celebrity backing.

No flashy budgets.

But something inside me was uncomfortable staying away.

I had spent years watching supplements that looked beautiful…

but didn’t do anything.

Capsules designed for Instagram.

Packaging more expensive than the ingredients inside.

That bothered me. Deeply.

What’s the point of a good-looking capsule

if the person consuming it doesn’t feel better?

Health isn’t a branding exercise.

It’s a moral responsibility.

So I chose the slower route.
No hype.
No shortcuts.
No obsession with how the capsule looks.

Instead — we obsessed over what happens inside the body.
It hasn’t been easy.
It hasn’t been fast.

And it definitely hasn’t been glamorous.

But today, when I look at what we’re building,
I feel something rare in business.

"Peace."

Not because we’ve “made it”…

but because we didn’t compromise while getting here.

Sometimes the stupid decision

is the only honest one.

No visible change.

That’s it.
This is why I stopped trusting “premium-looking” supplements
and started questioning what’s inside them.

H𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜.

It’s functional.
And function doesn’t go viral —
but lies do.

Yesterday, I had to explain why ghee can become toxic.

Not to a nutritionist.
To a Shopify development agency.

They wanted to understand Just What Works™ and what makes us different from every other supplement brand launching in India.

The answer came down to two words:

𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Here's what I told them:

Ghee is great. Ayurveda celebrates it. Your grandmother swears by it.
But consume more than your body needs?
You'll feel it go wrong fast.

The same principle applies to vitamins and nutrients.

→ Good ingredients in the right dose = biological benefit
→ Good ingredients beyond adequate quantity = potential toxicity

Most supplement brands compete on how much they can pack into a capsule.
More adaptogens.
More vitamins.
More "proprietary blends."

We do the opposite.

We ask: What does the body actually need to shift a biomarker?
What's clinically dosed?
What's bioavailable?

Everything else? We subtract it.

The agency guy seemed convinced.
I'm not sure he fully grasped the depth of formulation science we're building around.

But that's okay.

That's part of the founder journey at a cutting-edge nutraceutical company.

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Because when you're challenging the "more is better" narrative that dominates wellness, clarity becomes your first product.

I have a problem with how “premium” is defined in wellness.

Shiny bottles.

Glossy capsules.

Instagram-ready labels.

But inside??

Weak doses.

Cheap raw materials.

Ingredients added for appearance, not outcomes.

And that bothers me.

Because when someone buys a health product,

they’re not buying aesthetics.

They’re buying hope.

Hope that they’ll feel better.

Sleep better.
Think clearer.
Age slower.

I’d rather build something that works quietly
than something that photographs well.

But for me, performance comes first.
Always.

We 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 We 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬

Sounds counterintuitive.
But biology hates clutter.

While formulating, we kept asking one question:

𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞?
𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝.
𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝.
𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝.
𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝.

Because most supplements fail for one simple reason:

𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲.
The body doesn’t get “more benefit”.
It gets confused.
So we built with rules:
• no overlapping mechanisms
• no label-friendly fillers
• no ingredient without a clear job

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓.
𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆.
𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈.
𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔.

And once you feel that difference,

you stop trusting crowded labels forever.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝟑𝟖%.
 
Results improved.

When we started formulating our product,
the instinct was to add more.

More ingredients = more benefits, right?

Wrong.

Every added ingredient:
increases biological overlap
dilutes signal clarity
increases variability in outcomes
So we did something uncomfortable.

We removed over one-third of the ingredients.
Not because they were useless —
but because they were redundant.

The result?
more consistent feedback
clearer effects

fewer “it worked for my friend, not for me” stories

This is the part most brands won’t say out loud:
A crowded label feels safe.
A minimal label feels risky.

But biology rewards clarity, not comfort.

If you’ve ever felt a supplement was “hit or miss”,
this is usually why.

The man who refused to leave.

Imagine this…
You build something from scratch.
Blood. Sweat. Ego. Mistakes.

Then a bigger, louder, richer company acquires you.
Big ship.
Small ship.

One day, the Captain of the big ship calls you in.
Looks you straight in the eye and says —
“You’re too attached to the old ways.
You can’t cut it anymore.
You should step down.”

That line hurts.
Not professionally… personally.

Most people would take the cheque.

Change LinkedIn bio to Angel Investor.

Go post sunset photos from Maldives.

But this man doesn’t leave.

Few months later… same meeting.
Same words.
Same verdict.
“Seriously. It’s not working.”

Again… he stays.

No drama.
No Twitter threads.
No ego-fueled exits.
Just quiet work.

He stops obsessing over tomorrow.

Starts obsessing over the next 10 minutes.

Fixes unit economics.
Fixes culture.
Stops the bleeding.
Starts making sense.

While the world is watching the Big Ship…

he’s turning the so-called lifeboat into a speedboat.

Two years pass.

The “liability” becomes the crown jewel.

The “problem child” becomes the favourite son.

The small company starts growing faster than the one that bought it.

And then… the final meeting.
Same Captain.
Same room.

But this time, he isn’t asking for a resignation.

He’s handing over the keys.

To everything.
Big ship.
Small ship.
Entire fleet.

And he says publicly —
“I was wrong. He was right.”

That’s rare.
And that’s real leadership.

Lesson?

Sometimes the strongest response to
“Quit”
is not arguing…

It’s staying.
Staying calm.
Staying focused.

Staying so damn good
that one day they have no option
but to give you their chair.

No noise.

Just results.
