My name is Melanie, and I am the Founder & CEO of The Email Marketers. 

We help 8-figure DTC brands make more money and build a strong community through retention marketing: Email, SMS, direct mail, subscriptions, memberships, loyalty programs, and more. 

We do this by: 
1. Functioning as your full outsourced retention marketing department

I started The Email Marketers because I felt the agency world was fundamentally broken. I swore I would never start an agency. 

But life is funny like that because after freelancing for a few months, quickly growing to a size that I alone could not fulfill anymore, I had accidentally started an agency. 

But I wanted to do it differently. 

Now, I run The Email Marketers to show that agency partners can actually care about you. That's why we relentlessly strive to provide our brands with a wow-experience.

Before I started The Email Marketers, I was the Head of Email Marketing for one of LA's fastest-growing agencies and the first marketing hire for Apt2B (acquired), as well as a marketing consultant for conglomerate brands such as Mercedes-Benz and SMART before that.

I have experience working with global brands and start-ups in the e-commerce, B2B, SaaS automotive, beverage, skincare, retail, clothing, consumer electronics space & more.

The day our agency almost died…

We lost one of our biggest clients - a whale.
The kind of client that makes up a meaningful chunk of your revenue, and whose departure stings just as much emotionally as it does financially.

Then, within 6 weeks, we lost 4 core team members:

- Our head of copy
- Our head of strategy
- Our operations manager
- Our most senior email strategist

It was brutal.

I remember staying up until 3 am many nights...

Worried about our clients receiving quality work with a smaller team. Stressed about more team members leaving out of fear. And the hardest part of it all?

There was no clear reason.
No drama.
No bad culture.
No underperformance.

People were just moving into higher positions, which I 100% support.

If The Email Marketers helped them become so talented that other companies wanted to steal them... Then that in itself puts a smile on my face.

However, it still left a hole in our agency.
But strangely enough, when you ask the universe for growth... It delivers!

With the team we had left, we managed to turn things around:

Lots of late nights.
Rethinking our strategies.
Breaking down every aspect that didn't work.

And quite frankly, I couldn't have done it without them.

The biggest lesson I learned from this is that growth isn't a linear path. There will be seasons of abundance and there will be seasons of struggle.
But in the end, it's how you react to the hardships.

Today, The Email Marketers are stronger than ever:

- Our systems are tight.
- Our processes are built to scale.
- Our clients are more aligned and more excited.
- Our quality of service has never been this amazing.

And our team? Happier, more talented, and more in sync than ever! It's the kind of team you'd bet your last nickel on in the Super Bowl finals.

Oh, and those two people who left? They asked to come back. The ones that did are now in much better-suited seats than ever before.

And of course, to a business owner's soft heart, that felt validating. But even more so, it showed how everything is always part of a bigger plan.

So my note for you today: If you’re in the middle of your own hard season, hang in there. Calmer waters are coming.

For most of my life, I lived by the “suck it up” mentality.

In martial arts, we weren’t allowed to drink water during training, no matter how thirsty we were. You waited until class was over. That simple rule ingrained something deep in me: If you’re tired, push harder. If there’s too much work, do more.

Someone once told me, “You’re like a diamond, you love being forged under pressure.” And for years, I wore that as a badge of honor. I’d start work in the morning with a cup of coffee and often wouldn’t lift my head until 4 p.m., dizzy and realizing I hadn’t eaten all day. At the time, that felt like success, peak hustle culture.

But eventually, I learned the hard truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup.
 “Just do more” only works until your body and mind stop cooperating.

Now, I’ve found that taking the time to build a calm, intentional morning, getting enough sleep, moving my body, actually eating breakfast and lunch, has made me infinitely better as a leader and as a human.

And maybe the biggest lesson?

The first unlock in life is saying yes to everything.
The second, and far more powerful,is learning what to say no to.

Today, I added the 13th item to my Black Friday–Cyber Monday list...

It’s a list I’ve been curating for the past six weeks.

Things I’ve intentionally held off on buying until BFCM, plus a few “let’s see how low this gets” items.

During our weekly stand-up, I joked about it and asked the team if they do the same.

A lot of hands went up.

So, of course, October performance can dip.
People are waiting.

Consumers are holding their breath, holding their wallets, building their own little wish lists in the background.

It also explains why Early Access emails are consistently some of our best performers every single year.

By the time those emails hit, shoppers haven’t purchased anything in weeks. 

There’s so much pent-up demand, so much “I’ve been waiting for this” energy, and excitement, that the second we crack open the door, they sprint through it. 

But there’s another, quieter reason Early Access works so well:

You’re catching people before their BFCM budget evaporates. Once shoppers have made those first few purchases, the itch is scratched.

Their excitement settles.
The dopamine fades. 
And slowly, logic returns.

They realize they’ve spent a lot of their budget, and they… stop.

If you wait until it's too late in the weekend, you’re basically arriving at the party when everyone’s already full, tired, and carrying five shopping bags.

The brands that win BFCM aren’t the ones who shout the loudest on Black Friday.

They’re the ones who catch customers before their wallets get fatigued, when demand is high, budgets are fresh, and everyone is still excited to buy.

And Early Access is exactly when that window opens.
