Participant in Ngā Hononga-ā-Kiwa, delivered by the University of Waikato as a consortium partner for the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence. Ngā Hononga-ā-Kiwa (NHK) is a deliberate ecosystem that brings together students, educators, businesses, Māori and Indigenous communities, and thought leaders in Māori Business and Māori Education.

Fortunate enough to head to Malaysia in 2023 for two weeks, I participated in an Indigenous Business Study Tour, engaging with diverse indigenous communities, businesses, and institutions. This experience broadened my understanding of global citizenship, indigenous entrepreneurship, and cross-cultural collaboration, leaving a profound impact on my perspective.

Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa aims to increase Māori business engagement, capability and awareness internationally. Our business programmes are designed to facilitate international business engagement for Māori tertiary students and Māori businesses across Aotearoa.

In 2022, I had the privilege of serving as a tuakana on this program that involved three separate weeks of travel across Aotearoa, New Zealand. Throughout these journeys, we delved into our Māori culture and its intersection with business practices. Engaging with various stakeholders, including the business community, universities, and government agencies, this experience provided invaluable insights into indigenous entrepreneurship and cultural heritage from a Maori perspective. 

My main takeaway: Māoridom is my superpower 🚀

The North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE) is committed to helping New Zealand build sustainable, future-focused trade and cultural relationships with Greater China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, and Korea.

I was honored to have been selected as one of ten New Zealand business leaders for the Technology Study Tour to Hong Kong and Southern China, organized by North Asia CAPE. This exceptional opportunity allowed me to visit prominent companies such as Huawei, Zuru, and Datatech, as well as participate in key industry events like the Asia Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Fair, Digital Display Expo, and the Amusement and Attraction Expo in Guangzhou.

The primary goal of this study tour was to enhance understanding of the greater Chinese market among emerging tech leaders in Aotearoa, while also providing support for those seeking international opportunities.

Why did I move across the other side of the world to join a one person startup?

Because I’d already spent years trying to build one alone.

I’d started four companies. None of them truly clicked. No real product market fit. No deep pull from the world. Just me trying really hard to make something work.

And I’ve always wanted to build something that actually mattered.

I left home at 16. 

I grew up around gangs, violence, environments that make you believe your world is small. And I’ve always wanted to show my siblings and kids like me that it doesn’t have to be.

Startups felt like the highest leverage way to do that.

I’d had a front row seat watching Toby build Kiki London 🥨 for five years. I was in the room at his first fireside chat with Mahesh. I watched the wins. The losses. The investor updates. The moments where he was ripped apart and rebuilt the whole thing anyway.

So when he messaged me asking if I’d stop everything and join him, it wasn’t scary. I wouldn’t have said yes to anyone else.

But I know Toby won’t walk away. I know he’ll do whatever it takes. And I wanted to build something real, with someone I trust like that.

When I joined, we’d done 20 matches. Hosts had earned $20k.

Now six months later, we’re close to 600 matches and $700k earned for hosts.

I moved for every 16 year old version of me. To show her what’s possible.
