Tether’s Gold Purchases Are a Signal Worth Watching

The latest data from the World Gold Council shows something unusual. Among all sovereign and institutional buyers of gold this year, Tether sits at the very top with 26 tonnes. That is more than Kazakhstan, Brazil, Turkey, Iraq, or China’s reported additions.

This raises an important question. Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer and one of the biggest beneficiaries of the crypto ecosystem, is choosing to accumulate physical gold rather than Bitcoin. This is not a philosophical choice. It is a balance sheet decision grounded in risk management, liquidity, and regulatory optics.

Gold offers three advantages that Bitcoin cannot replicate today:
	1.	Zero counterparty risk and a globally recognized role in reserve management.
	2.	Regulatory neutrality. Gold is not subject to the same evolving scrutiny facing crypto assets.
	3.	Deep, established liquidity, especially for institutions that need predictable collateral behavior across market cycles.

Bitcoin has strong long-term adoption arguments, but its price volatility, uncertain regulatory path, and lack of recognition as a reserve asset make it difficult to use as institutional-grade backing for a multi-tens-of-billions balance sheet.

The takeaway is simple. When a major actor within the crypto economy allocates reserves into gold rather than the asset that supposedly represents the “future of money,” it tells us something about what institutions currently trust to protect value at scale.

Gold may be old, but in times of uncertainty, it remains the asset even crypto giants choose to rely on.

The potential deal reached in Congress to avert the latest U.S. government shutdown is good news — it removes one more layer of near-term political risk that markets have grown increasingly “used to” each year. Indeed, history shows that shutdowns have only a marginal impact on equity markets: during past shutdowns the S&P 500 has still posted average gains of some. 

That said, the bigger risk today lies not in the shutdown drama, but in the data behind inflation and unemployment.

On inflation, one rather striking figure: in the September report for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), about 40% of the price quotes were imputed — that is, not collected directly but estimated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

With nearly half of the inputs being estimations, questions around accuracy, survey sample adequacy and data reliability naturally rise.

If upcoming unemployment or inflation releases come in better than expected — on the surface that looks positive, but here’s the twist: if inflation appears subdued (thanks in part to heavily-imputed data) and unemployment steadies, then the mainstream narrative of imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in December may fade away. Markets are currently pricing in a Fed cut — but if the data indicates more strength than weakness, the Fed may hold off. That scenario could trigger a negative surprise reaction in risk assets: rather than “rates are coming down,” you’d get “rates stay higher for longer”.

In that light we remain bullish on gold. All the structural push-factors for higher gold prices are still in place: elevated data uncertainty (which tends to drive safe-haven demand), the potential for delayed rate cuts (which improves gold’s carry appeal), and a macro backdrop where investors remain uneasy about the durability of the reflation story and real yields. In short: while the shutdown risk appears dialled down, the inflation-data risk is dialled up, and gold is a natural hedge.
