After 22 years of corporate life and reaching the pinnacle, I stepped off the high-wire to begin a new chapter.

Trading the executive suite of a $4B global powerhouse for the excitement of entrepreneurship, I'm now spreading knowledge, innovation, and transformation.

Through 5 major career transitions, I evolved from a VP of Marketing & Sales to Division President, and ultimately, CIO.

Today's my 50th birthday.
If I could go back, here's the advice
I'd give my 20-year-old self:

Don't be afraid to start over.
You might just like your new story better.

In 2012, I lost 140 lbs in just over a year.
It completely changed my life.

I went from being "demoted" at work

In 2023, I left a 23-year corporate career
to start my own company.

No idea how to do it.
No personal brand to build from.
I'd never even posted on social media.

I went from 1,766 LinkedIn followers in June 2023
to 687,015 today (hi fam 👋).

I thought I was keeping the peace by staying silent.

I learned this the hard way with my project manager.

His work quality was slipping. The team noticed.
I said nothing for months.

When I finally had the conversation:

"I've been waiting for you to bring this up," he said.
"I know I'm struggling. I thought you didn't care."

That's when it hit me hard. My silence wasn't kindness.

It was abandonment disguised as peace-keeping.

What I thought protected our relationship was actually destroying it.

Every time you choose courage over comfort, you build something precious:

➟ A culture where honesty thrives
➟ Relationships built on real trust
➟ Solutions that actually solve problems

Yes, difficult conversations are... difficult.

But the space on the other side?

That's where real progress happens.

The awkward feeling might last a few mins.
But regret can last a lifetime.

Your team is waiting for you to lead.
Not around the hard stuff.
But through it.

A real strategy can be explained in 30 seconds. 

Can yours?

Most companies don’t have a strategy.
They have a shiny castle built in thin air.

If your “strategy” is a 50-page deck full of buzzwords and a goal to “beat the competition,” you will lose.

Strategy isn’t the castle on top.
It’s the scaffolding underneath.

What people think strategy is. The castle.
1. Big goals and vision statements.
2. “Beating the competition.”
3. A thick deck that sounds smart.

What strategy actually is. The scaffolding.
1. Choosing what not to do. The hardest leadership move.
2. Making trade-offs that hurt. If nothing hurts, nothing changed.
3. Placing a few big bets. You can’t be everything to everyone.
4. Building advantages competitors can’t copy. Rules they can’t follow.

Ultimate litmus test:
Can your team explain the strategy in 30 seconds?
If they need the deck, the strategy is broken.

Look at the bottom half of the graphic.

"Who is making the call on this?"

If you hear this, your system is broken.

You don't need another meeting.
You need framework clarity.
Most teams slap RACI on everything.
That is a trap.

RACI is for executing tasks.
DACI is for making decisions.

Mix them up, and you get bottlenecks.
You get "Design by Committee."

Here is the exact difference:

1. RACI (The Execution Engine)

Responsible: Who does the work?

Accountable: Who gets fired if it fails?

Consulted: Who gives expert input?

Informed: Who gets cc'd?

2. DACI (The Decision Engine)

Driver: Who forces the resolution?

Approver: Who holds the veto?

Contributor: Who provides the data?

Informed: Who gets notified?

The Golden Rule:
Tasks can have multiple workers.
Decisions can only have ONE Approver.

If you have two Approvers...
You don't have a decision.
You have a negotiation.

You are rarely battling the market.
Most of the time, you are battling your own mind.

High performers are extra vulnerable because the brain runs hot.

Under stress, it takes shortcuts.

If you miss those shortcuts, you make permanent decisions from temporary panic.

I mapped 12 thinking traps that quietly kill momentum:

1/ Catastrophizing
Small setback. Big doom story.

2/ All-or-nothing thinking
If it is not perfect, it is worthless.

3/ Mind reading
Assuming you know what others think without asking.

4/ Personalization
Taking global problems personally.

5/ Overgeneralization
One bad moment becomes “this always happens.”

6/ Mental filtering
Only seeing negatives. Ignoring positives.

7/ Should statements
Rigid rules that punish you and others.

8/ Emotional reasoning
Treating feelings as facts.

9/ Labeling
Turning a mistake into an identity.

10/ Discounting the positive
Calling wins “luck” and mistakes “proof.”

11/ Fortune telling
Predicting failure without data.

12/ Comparison trap
Measuring your messy reality against someone’s highlight reel.

Protocol.
Name the trap. Notice it in real time. Choose a better thought.

Look at the 12 puzzle pieces.
Which one is your default when you are exhausted?

For me, it is all-or-nothing thinking.

Most leaders confuse “having data” with “thinking critically.”

They collect facts, pick the first obvious answer, and move on.
That is not critical thinking. That is just information.

Real critical thinking is uncomfortable.
It attacks your assumptions.
It checks second-order effects.

I built a simple tool for this.
The Wheel of Critical Thinking.

It starts with one clear question.
Then it forces five roles.

1/ The Evidence Scout
Separate hard data from loud opinions.
Check the source, not just the story.

2/ The Bias Breaker
Name what you are assuming.
Ask, “What if the opposite is true?”

3/ The Lens Collector
Step outside your echo chamber on purpose.
Who disagrees, and what do they see that you do not?

4/ The Innovator
Refuse the false binary.
If A and B both look bad, design a third option that is wild but plausible.

5/ The Second-Order Thinker
Play the tape forward.
Map the ripple effects.
Prefer small, reversible bets over big, irreversible jumps.

Warning.
Do not stop at step 1.

1. Treat It Like a Puzzle 
Every crisis is just data. 
It is not a verdict on your worth.

2. Seek the Sting 
Hunt for the truth. 
Even when it bruises your ego.

3. Weaponize the Pain
Mistakes are not failures. 
Pain plus reflection equals progress. 
They are raw material for algorithms.

4. Kill the Root 
Stop putting Band-Aids on symptoms. 
Find the source. 
Fix it once.

5. Code Your Principles 
Write down your lessons. 
Turn them into a reusable system.

6. Build the Machine 
Heroics do not scale. 
Design systems to do the heavy lifting.

7. Exploit Your Weakness 
Find the leaks in your logic. 
Plug them immediately.

8. Leverage the 80/20 
Find the vital few inputs. 
Ignore the noisy majority.

9. Execute Violently 
Insight without action is useless. 
Progress demands momentum.

10. Multiply with Partners 
One plus one equals three. 
Find people who cover your blind spots.

If you don't cringe at your past decisions... You aren't growing fast enough.

Every Sunday, spend 2 minutes and list:
“Benefits I did not cause.”

Then do one small act.

1/ Thank one person whose work made your week easier.
2/ Thank one service you take for granted.
3/ Thank one person at home who keeps your life running.

Pick only one. Send one message.

- This compounds.
- Your mood lifts.
- Relationships deepen.
- People feel good around you.
And yes, you create more luck.
