I worked as a research assistant for Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch executive agency for public works and water management. My main task was to conduct a research project on how to scale the use of second hand furniture in the Netherlands to bolster sustainability in the industry.

The research project involved:

- Reviewing the literature on the environmental and social benefits of second hand furniture, as well as the barriers and drivers for its adoption by consumers and businesses.

- Conducting interviews and surveys with various stakeholders, such as furniture manufacturers, retailers, resellers, refurbishers, NGOs, and customers.

- Analyzing the data and identifying the best practices, opportunities, and challenges for scaling the use of second hand furniture in the Netherlands.

- Developing recommendations and strategies for Rijkswaterstaat and other relevant actors to promote and facilitate the circular economy of furniture.

The research project was a valuable learning experience for me, as I gained insights into the complex and dynamic system of furniture production and consumption, and the potential for circular solutions to reduce waste and emissions, while creating social and economic value. I also improved my skills in research design, data collection and analysis, report writing, and stakeholder engagement.

I enjoyed working with a diverse and motivated team of researchers, consultants, and experts from Rijkswaterstaat and other organizations. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important and innovative project.

Homogeneous thinking feels fast.

Meetings are shorter.
Debate is minimal.

The cost of suppressed dissent is paid at scale.

🪞 The truth

Many leaders say they value debate.

Fewer tolerate discomfort.

If disagreement changes your tone, your accessibility, or your fairness, people notice.

Respect under agreement is easy.

Respect under tension is leadership.

You don’t need to like every argument.

You need to handle it well.

There’s a blunt quote that makes people laugh because it’s uncomfortable.

A bee does not waste its energy trying to convince a fly that honey is better than decay.

Crude metaphor.
Accurate leadership lesson.

Not everyone values what you value.

And leadership energy is finite.

🧠 Incentives shape perception

Behavioral economics teaches something simple.

People do not evaluate information neutrally.

They evaluate it through incentives.

A bee seeks nectar.
A fly seeks decay.

If someone’s incentives reward short-term noise, they will resist long-term strategy.
If someone thrives on conflict, they will resist collaboration.
If someone benefits from chaos, they will resist structure.

You are not debating data.

You are confronting preference.

⚖️ You cannot reason someone out of an incentive

Research on motivated reasoning reveals that when identity or incentives are involved, logic rarely changes minds.

Facts become filtered.
Evidence becomes reinterpreted.
Arguments become entrenched.

Leaders often mistake disagreement for misunderstanding.

Sometimes it’s misalignment.

Those are different problems.

Misunderstanding requires explanation.
Misalignment requires boundary setting.

🧭 Energy is a strategic asset

One of the most underrated leadership skills is energy allocation.

Where you focus attention scales signal.
What you debate legitimizes.
What you tolerate compounds.

If you spend your energy convincing flies to like honey, two things happen.

You drain yourself.
You neglect the bees.

High performers notice where leadership attention flows.

So do skeptics.

Choose carefully.

📉 Not every battle deserves engagement

Senior leaders learn this the hard way.

Some critics are persuadable.
Some stakeholders are principled but cautious.
Some teams simply need clarity.

And some people are committed to a worldview that benefits from resisting change.

Arguing endlessly does not convert them.

It reinforces them.

The discipline is knowing which conversations build alignment & which simply burn oxygen.

🪞 The mature version of this lesson

This is not about arrogance.

It’s about discernment.

Leadership is not winning every argument.

It is advancing the mission.

If someone fundamentally rejects the premise of where you are headed, your job is not to endlessly persuade.

It is to decide:

Engage.
Realign.
Or move forward without them.

✅ The leadership question

Before investing energy in persuasion, ask this.

Is this person lacking information?
Or lacking alignment?

If it’s information, teach patiently.

If it’s alignment, set direction clearly.

A bee does not waste its energy arguing taste.

It finds more nectar.

Leaders should do the same.

🎯 You cannot delegate consequence

You can delegate tasks.

You can delegate authority.
You can delegate analysis.
You can delegate execution.

You cannot delegate consequence.

That remains with you.

🧠 Authority concentrates outcome

As you rise in leadership, something subtle shifts.

Decisions get distributed.
Work gets divided.
Input gets collected.

But accountability consolidates.

When something works, the team executed.
When something fails, leadership decided.

This is not unfair.

It is structural.

⚖️ Delegation transfers activity, not ownership

Many leaders misunderstand delegation.

They believe handing off responsibility also transfers exposure.
It doesn’t.

You can ask someone to run the model.
You can assign someone to manage the project.
You can empower someone to negotiate.

But if the strategy fails, if the risk materializes, if trust erodes, the consequence moves upward.

That is the silent contract of leadership.

🧭 The illusion of distance

Senior leaders sometimes try to distance themselves from outcomes.

“The team recommended it.”
“The data supported it.”
“That was the operating unit’s decision.”

None of that eliminates consequence.

Because leadership is not about who performed the action.

It is about who accepted the risk.

And risk acceptance cannot be delegated.

📉 Why this matters

When leaders internalize this truth, behavior changes.

They listen more carefully.
They probe assumptions harder.
They challenge optimism earlier.
They slow irreversible decisions.

Not out of fear.

Out of ownership.

Ownership sharpens judgment.

🪞 The philosophical weight

Consequence is what gives leadership moral gravity.

If you could delegate consequence, leadership would be administrative. 

But you can’t.

You carry the second-order effects.
You carry the reputational impact.
You carry the long-term implications.

That weight is not a burden.

It is the role.
