I come from a family of employees.

Good people. 
Hard workers. 
Steady paychecks.

Nobody ever started a business.

Nobody talked about building something of their own.

That wasn’t the path.

The path was: get good grades, get a good job, work there for 30 years, retire.

So when I left a corporate CRO role to go out on my own, it didn’t make sense to anyone.

You need delusion.

I get called lucky a lot.

And honestly? I have been lucky.

I had savings when I quit my job.
I wrote on LinkedIn before it was popular.
And a wife who supported me while I figured it out.

People confuse wealth with money.

They're related, but not the same at all.

I used to make great money at work. 

Big title and bonuses, the whole startup thing.
But my calendar always belonged to other people.

I failed a lot (in public) over the last six years.

It feels embarrassing at first.

But here's what I learned: 

None of those failures mattered.

I told everyone about my big idea.

Then I did nothing about it for a year.

Talked about it at work.
Mentioned it to friends.

Got all of the nods, the encouragement, and the "that's awesome, you should totally do that."

It felt really great.

I didn't have it figured out when I started.

I still don't, honestly.

People assume that because something worked out, there was a plan.

Some moment where it all clicked and the path became clear.

That's not actually how it happened.

When I left my corporate job in 2019, I had no idea what I was doing.

Not what you want. Not what you ask for. What you accept when it doesn't show up.

Let someone miss a deadline with no consequence and that's the new timeline. Let someone talk over you in meetings and that's the new dynamic. 
Let yourself skip the gym "just this once" and that's the new normal.

Standards aren't set by what you say. They're set by what you let slide.

And people are always watching for what you let slide.

This works in every direction. Relationships. Work. How you treat yourself. The bar is wherever you last accepted less than you wanted.

Most people think they have a standards problem. They don't. They have an enforcement problem.

Decide what you won't tolerate. Then actually don't tolerate it.

The people who grow fastest have one thing in common—they actively seek out critics and completely ignore enemies.

Most people do the opposite. They surround themselves with people who nod along, then spend hours thinking about the haters.

That's backwards.

Your critics are an unpaid advisory board. They're telling you what your friends are too polite to say. The investor who passed and told you why. The customer who left and explained what was missing. The mentor who pushed back on your "brilliant" idea.

That feedback is expensive to get. Most people just ghost you. When someone takes the time to tell you what's wrong, that's data.

Enemies don't have data. They have resentment dressed up as opinions. Nothing you do will satisfy them because their issue isn't your work. It's your existence.

The trap is treating them the same. Either you armor up against everyone and stop learning. Or you let everyone in and get paralyzed by noise.

The skill is knowing which is which. Then chasing the critics and starving the enemies of attention.

One makes you better. The other just drains you.
