Building a business in public is f***ing hard.

And it never gets easier.

I left the 9-5 almost three years ago.

I have been posting on LinkedIn for half of that.

People say you get used to it.

You get comfortable putting your life on full blast.

But…

It's still nerve-racking.

Every post feels like a risk.
Every story feels too personal.
Every time I hit "post," I wonder if this one makes me look like an idiot.

But here is why I keep doing it:

Someone out there is trying to make the same move I did.

- They are stuck in a job that doesn't fit anymore.
- They are not sure if they can make it work.
- They are scared to leave.

And if I share what worked, what didn't, and where I screwed up, maybe it helps them take the leap a little faster. 🤷‍♂️

We need more people building in public.

The real s***.
The ugly.
The doubt.

Because when you see someone else doing it, you feel less alone.

And that's what keeps me posting, even when it is uncomfortable. 🫡

I was too scared to post on LinkedIn for years.

Afraid of people judging me...

Turns out nobody gave a shit. 🤣 

Because no one who is one step ahead of you will judge you for trying.

- Musicians won't judge you for learning guitar.
- Artists won't judge you for picking up a brush.

There's this idea that everyone will judge you if you start posting on LinkedIn.

Or if you share your idea before it's perfect.

The real creators won't ever judge you.

Because we've been there too.

And anyone who does judge you?

They're just jealous they're not brave enough to try. 🤷‍♂️ 

So keep pushing.

Keep trying new things.

And don't wait until the New Year to start.

I have everything I worked for.

So why does it still feel like I'm behind?

I left my job 2.5 years ago.

Built a business.

Get to be home with my daughter.

Work with people I actually like.

And I still wake up some mornings thinking I'm falling behind.

It's this weird push and pull.

Part of me feels relief because slowing down feels safer.

The other part goes: "If you're not grinding, you're losing."

Both feelings are valid. (as my therapist would say)

And they're both kind of right.

Because here's what I'm figuring out.

I'm not slowing down.

I'm building something that won't fall apart when life is chaotic.

A sprint won't protect future Evan.

But a foundation will.

My brain still thinks going hard equals safety.

But right now, safety actually looks like stable systems and space to breathe.

Not running on fumes.

I'm trying to live somewhere in the middle.

Not sitting still.

Not burning out either.

Just consistent.
Intentional.
Steady.

Some days I still feel like I'm slacking.

Most days I know I'm just being a person.

Idk.

I'm not smarter than you.

I just don't quit.

Most people think successful business owners have some secret formula.

Or they're just built different.

Negative. 

This is what it is:

→ We try things that might not work 
→ We keep going when it gets hard 
→ We double down on what works 
→ We don't stop when we feel dumb

That's it.

99% of business owners aren't geniuses. 

It's just time and energy in the right direction.

Impressions on LinkedIn are down.

Good.

Every client I write for is seeing lower numbers.

My posts too.

But you know what hasn't changed?

- The DMs.
- The discovery calls that book from a single post.
- The connect requests from people who are my target audience.

I think the algorithm's just getting smarter. 

Showing your stuff to fewer people.

But the right people.

Which means impressions were always a garbage metric anyway.

The only thing that matters is this.

1. Are you talking to real humans?
2. Are strangers in your space hitting you up?
3. Are people asking how you can help them?

If yeah, then you're good. 

If no, your content's missing the mark.

Try something new. 

But stop refreshing your analytics (like me). 

Start looking at the actual conversations.

That's all that matters. 🫡

Because money is a piece of the life you want.

Not the whole thing.

I left six figures twice to chase something that fit better.

Not every climb is up.

Some of the best moves look like steps back.

As long as you're stepping towards the life YOU want, it's the right move.
