It’s Monday morning after Thanksgiving break.

We got back late from vacation and the kids didn’t want to get up for school. Warm beds on ice cold mornings are where many dreams perish.

On mornings like this I think back on the last 20 years of my professional life:

• The United States Air Force Academy
• Division 1 College Football / USA Olympic Team
• Leading troops through brutal deployment schedules
• Working 100% commission sales in a ruthless market
• SMB executive responsible for morale of 200+ people
• Entrepreneur, husband, father of 5, church planting

Here are 7 motivational quotes that will jump off a poster and slap you extraordinary.

1. If you want what no one else has, you must do what no one else does. If you want the view, you must be willing to make the climb.

2. Champions are forged in the shadows long before they ever see the spotlight.

3. Why-power is stronger than willpower. Stop thinking about your feelings and get back to focusing on why you’re doing it.

4. Suffering is leg-day for your character muscles. Champions learn to love the smell of the gym floor. The aftertaste of discipline is far better than that of compromise.

5. If you’re waiting for motivation to take action you don’t understand how it works. Motivation comes on the other side of action. Get after it and it will get after you.

6. Champions don’t tolerate Negative Nancys, Debbie Downers, or Woe-is-me-Eeyores. Throw the pity party in your own room, for yourself, get that junk out of your system, and then get to work. Attitude is contagious and winners don’t tolerate whiners.

The most powerful habit for personal growth junkies.

It’s so simple — yet so often neglected.

“Daily reflection.”

Look back on your day and identify the insights, lessons, and possibilities.

Here are 7 from my day:

1. Be ready for your alarm clock like an Olympian is for the starting gun.

2. Don’t be in a rush. Don’t be desperate.

3. Intuition can be incredibly helpful when it comes to hiring employees or taking on clients.

4. Always be ready to make your pitch. Don’t let your moment catch you by surprise.

5. Everything you want is on the other side of an uncomfortable conversation.

6. Look for the “why” behind the “what.” If someone tells you “no” be curious to see what’s on the other side.

7. People don’t really know what’s possible until you show them.

What’s on your mind?

Here are 10 totally random things on mine.

1. One of the best parts of a vacation is when you realize you have a life you don’t need a vacation from.

2. Your perception of what’s possible or realistic is shaped so much by those around you that it’s almost scary. Be careful. Be intentional.

3. What gets measured gets improved.

4. It’s an absolute crime that most people have inspiring coaches, mentors, or professors in their life until they’re about 20 years old and then all of a sudden they get into some job with some disengaged, uninspiring manager who lacks the intensity, love, and commitment to them and to excellence that their previous influences had.

5. College football coaches who don’t win get fired. I wish the world of executive coaching and business coaching worked the same way. I meet too many people who’ve worked with big name coaches and who’ve not gotten results. Anyone who has ever worked with me knows I’m a total pit bull for possibility and will practically wrestle their best out of them until they’ve created results far beyond anything they’d ever imagined.

6. Unnecessary complexity really bothers me.

7. I don’t really like social media. I’d prefer to never be on it. But telling stories in public and sharing insights and ideas has been both personally enjoyable and professionally helpful. I’ve created some really incredible life-changing relationships since getting back on socials too.

8. Wisdom both sees the severity of an issue and also has the humility, gentleness, and self-restraint not to lose its temper.

9. You can have a title but not have influence. Influence is often much harder to earn.

10. How something is presented is just as important as the content.

I turn my LinkedIn posts into 3-minute YouTube shorts and Instagram reels.

I’ve been sending video text messages to my coaching clients for years so it doesn’t really feel like anything new.

I only have 116 subscribers on YT and 180 on IG right now, but I remember when I was just starting out on LinkedIn. 

I’m not some mega-influencer or anything but I’ve built a community of almost 7,000 people who are on this extraordinary adventure with me.

I wrote a LinkedIn post this year that led to a $50k client.

Last month an entrepreneur who has been reading my posts paid me $10k for a single session. We are going to meet at an extraordinary location in January and put all our attention on solving the biggest challenge in his business. We will also do something epic and have some fun because that’s how I like to get down.

Daniel Priestley says in his bestselling book “Oversubscribed” that in order for someone to go from a stranger who doesn’t know you to someone who trusts you and is willing to buy from you they must sufficiently be 7–11-4’ed.

They must spend 7 hours with you, have 11 separate interactions with you, and interact with you in 4 different locations. The funny part? You don’t actually need to be there. It can all be digital.

The pressure — indescribable at times.

The loneliness — like a cold rain on a cloudy morning.

Your spouse wasn’t necessarily meant to carry all of the weight so you don’t want to dump everything on them.

Your people are looking for a confident, composed leader and not a hot mess of emotion, weakness, or indecisiveness.

Your friends don’t quite get you. Your ambition and drive are possibly even concerning to them.

You’re trying to communicate clearly, flourish in your strengths, outsource your weaknesses, take extreme ownership, and get results.

You’re trying to lead others without being a hypocrite, all while battling all of your own issues.

And yet…

It’s such a privilege.

Someone. Must. Lead.

And so you say: “Here am I Lord. Send me.”

Not with some deafening boldness.
But rather with a quiet knowingness.

Knowing that people matter.
And the mission matters.

To those who shoulder the weight, stand in the trenches, and strive to love and lead people…

I’m weirdly obsessed with excellence.

3 quick things about me:

• Went to a military academy
• Went on a world tour as an entertainer
• Working now as a coach to extraordinary people

At The United States Air Force Academy we had Saturday morning inspections where they checked the top of our hangers in our closet for dust with a white glove. Discipline is proven when and where no one is looking.

On the world tour I worked with a performance coach who told us we had to “create the magic” every…single…night. The audience can feel if you’re just going through the motions.

As a coach to entrepreneurs, executives, leaders, and high-performers I have to show up to every single session and powerfully serve the person in front of me. How you do anything is how you do everything.

You MUST do the the work.

You must BRING it.

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

That is the shortcut.

5 habits of insanely great leaders and coaches.

With some examples from my own life.

1. They push you far outside your comfort zone.
↳ My vocal coach made me run 400 meter dashes for time and then stand at attention and sing The National Anthem in order to prepare my lungs for shows at high altitudes before our world tour.

2. They have ridiculously high standards and hold you accountable.
↳ My high school choir director would make us go “down the row” where each person would sing their individual part so he could hear who was off key or making a mistake.

3. They are fanatically committed to you being everything you are capable of being.
↳ My strength coach called my house at 2am to tell me he had been watching film and spotted the issue in my technique that if fixed would help me breakthrough my current plateau.

4. They invite you to join them on an adventure and introduce you to other extraordinary life-changing resources.
↳ My executive coach invited me to a 2-day breakthrough intensive where they helped us to get clarity on our next breakthrough and then see every single limiting belief that was holding us back.

5. They don’t just love winning, they love you, and they walk their own talk.
↳ My spiritual coach (I’m referring to my pastor) lives what he preaches and believes. He’s not just a preacher and teacher. He’s a shepherd and a friend.

I don’t want to be on social media today.

But I gave myself the challenge to create something of value and put it out into the world every day.

(I often give my clients these types of challenges and I need to play too so that I’m walking my own talk.)

A CEO I worked with years ago told me I did something unusual that he really liked. He said I was strangely obsessed with making everything as fun and as enjoyable as possible.

(This is what happens when you have a background both in business and as an entertainer.)

Years later it’s still something my clients tell me is one of their favorite things about our work together. 

I took 10 entrepreneurs down a waterslide in Orlando for a 2-day intensive earlier this year and I think it was my proudest professional accomplishment of all time.

But fun isn’t just about what you’re doing.
It’s about who you’re being.

Life is short and you spend most of it at work.
Have as much fun as you possibly can.

That’s extraordinary.

Which one’s for you?

1. I’m addicted to productivity and slowing down at the holidays can feel almost impossible.

2. It’s incredibly easy to know someone for many years and have no idea exactly what they do for a living.

3. A “house” is to a “home” what “rich” is to “wealthy.”

4. I’m so thankful for my wife and kids. Pushing my daughters on the swings, playing Uno with my son, and snuggling by the fire with Susie fills me with such indescribable happiness.

5. The best plan is the one:

• you stick to
• you have fun with
• gets you where you want

6. A breakthrough requires something breaking. Oftentimes it’s our own comfort.

7. “Rest Day” is one of the most important training days. A burned out and injured athlete is pretty useless to the game. Same is true with an entrepreneur, executive, or leader.
