Want to survive in content? Pick a lane.

The days of "I write blog posts and tweak for SEO" are dead.

Content is splitting into three tribes:

1. Systems builder. You obsess over workflows, automation, infrastructure. You build the content machine, not just feed it.

2. Strategic thinker. You shape the narrative. You decide what gets built, how it gets distributed, and why it matters.

3. Specialist. You do what AI won't touch. Executive voice, hard-won insights, deep research, sharp reporting.

That mushy middle? Gone in two years.

Charging by the hour will always keep you stuck in operator mode.
You're not leading.
You're not building anything for yourself.
You're just stacking someone else's bricks.

If you actually want to run a business
(not just be someone else's backup plan)
you need to make a clean break:

Monthly retainer.
Outcome-based pricing.
Clear scope.
And yes, you'll get pushback.

They'll say:
- "What's your hourly rate?"
→ "I don't price by the hour. I price for the outcome and support you need."
- "How much time will this take?"
→ "Let's define what a win looks like in the next 90 days. It's about results, not hours."
- "Can you just jump in for a few hours?"
→ "Sure, but momentum never happens one hour at a time. Retainer keeps things moving."
- "We want to keep it flexible."
→ "Flexible priorities are fine. The constant? I'm always in your corner."
- "We're not sure what we need."
→ "That's when a retainer matters most. We'll figure it out while we execute."
- "We don't want to overcommit."
→ "Start with 90 days. Enough to gain traction and know if this fits."
- "We only need you occasionally."
→ "I offer lighter retainers so we can work together at key points."

Clients who get your value don't want you on call.
They want you in their corner, consistently.
And if that's not a fit for them?
You walk away clean.
No more stretching out odd jobs just to keep the lights on.

Your pricing should show the real value you deliver.
Not just your hours on a timesheet.
