Yesterday was International Women's Day.

I spent it at a memorial.

My wife and I said goodbye to our dear friend of 40 years.

Christina Kumi Kimball was a goddess.

Grace. Precision. Focus. Beauty.

She was the daughter of a small Japanese mother and a tall African American military father.

She became a dancer.

Not just any dancer.

She performed with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company.
She danced on Broadway in Cats.
She lit up The Wiz.
She played Tiger Lily in the national tour of Peter Pan.
She graced the screen in The Cotton Club.

For 40 years, she was part of our lives.

And yesterday, we said goodbye.

Here's what I keep thinking:

Life isn't measured by how long you live.
It's measured by how many lives you touch.

Kumi touched generations.

Through every leap. Every performance. Every moment of presence.

She didn't just move across stages.
She moved people.

That's the legacy that lasts.

Rest in grace, Kumi. Your light shines on.

Warren Buffett hires for three traits.

Miss the third and the first two become dangerous.

Enthusiasm. Intelligence. Integrity.

Most people obsess over the first two.
They hire for energy. They promote for smarts.

Buffett says that's exactly how you build a disaster.

"If you hire somebody without integrity, you really want them to be dumb and lazy."

Because enthusiasm without integrity is manipulation.

I've seen it in branding for 4 decades.

The charismatic founder who burns every partner.
The brilliant strategist who overpromises and underdelivers.
The "visionary" CEO whose vision is always someone else's money.

They're talented. They're driven.
And they leave scorched earth everywhere they go.

Integrity isn't a soft skill.
It's the operating system everything else runs on.

Without it:
→ Your enthusiasm becomes noise
→ Your intelligence becomes manipulation
→ Your brand becomes a lie people eventually see through

Rich brands are built on trust.
Poor brands are built on tactics.

And trust compounds.
Tactics expire.

The question isn't "How smart are you?"
It's "Would I trust you with my business when no one's watching?"

That's the test.
That's the only test.

They lost the energy drink war. 

Then won a different one.

For 15 years, Celsius was a nobody.
Red Bull owned extreme sports.
Monster owned gaming.
5-Hour Energy owned convenience stores.

Celsius tried to compete. And failed.

Then they stopped trying.

They didn't chase 18-year-old gamers.
They chased 35-year-old women at the gym.

→ No skull graphics.
→ No extreme sports sponsorships.
→ No "UNLEASH THE BEAST" messaging.

Just: "Essential energy. No sugar. No aspartame."

They found a customer everyone else ignored.

2020: $130 million in revenue.
2023: $1.3 billion.
Stock up 4,000% in 5 years.

The lesson most brands miss:

You don't win by fighting for the same customer.
You win by finding the customer nobody's fighting for.

Celsius didn't beat Red Bull.
They made Red Bull irrelevant to their audience.

Who's the overlooked customer your competitors are ignoring?

More content wasn't the answer.

A single word was.

→ Volvo owns "safety."
→ Google owns "search."
→ FedEx owns "overnight."
→ Nike owns "performance."
→ Coca-Cola owns "happiness."

These aren't taglines.
They're mental monopolies.

And it's not just corporations.

→ Gary Vee owns "hustle."
→ Simon Sinek owns "why."
→ Richard Branson owns "rebel."
→ Dave Asprey owns "bulletproof."

Here's what most miss:

You don't claim a word by saying it.
You claim it by living it.

Volvo didn't just say "safety."
They invented the three-point seatbelt.
Then gave the patent away for free.

That's not marketing.
That's ownership.

The question isn't "What do you want to be known for?"

It's "What do you eat, breathe, and live relentlessly that's unmistakably you?"

If you can't answer that, neither can your customers.

And if your customers can't answer it?
You're competing on features.
You're competing on price.
You're competing on luck.

Rich brands own a word.
Poor brands rent attention.

The Pillsbury Doughboy died at 71.

Most brands don't last seven months.

Cause of death: Yeast infection and repeated pokes to the belly.

He's survived by his wife Play Dough, three children — John Dough, Jane Dough, and Baby Dill — plus one in the oven.

Service will be held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

(I didn't write this. The internet did. But I'm stealing it.)

Here's the branding lesson hiding in this ridiculous obituary:

The Doughboy worked for 71 years because he was:

→ Immediately edible
→ Instantly recognizable
→ Impossible to confuse with anyone else

One giggle. One poke. One "Hoo-hoo!"

That's it. That's the whole brand.

No repositioning. No "refreshing the brand for Gen Z."
No committee deciding he should be "more relatable."

Just a chubby dough blob doing the same thing for seven decades.

Meanwhile, most brands can't stay consistent for seven months.

They panic. They pivot. They chase trends.
They kill what made them memorable in the first place.

The Doughboy never pivoted.

And that's why we're still talking about him.

R.I.P. to a legend who understood:

The best brand strategy is being unforgettable — being hot — and never apologizing for it.

Most companies think marketing is broken.

Their message is.

Not because the product is weak.
Because the message is diluted.

Here's the rule most founders ignore:

Confused brands never scale.

And when your team can't articulate what you do in 30 seconds?
Customers won't wait 31.

Steal the 2-Sentence Brand Test:

We help _________ manage the problem of _________.
Unlike _________, we _________.

Example:

"We help founders manage the problem of commodity pricing.
Unlike agencies that hand you a logo and a tagline,
we rewire how the market perceives you."

That's the color-by-number version.

From there, you can build it out to something impossible to ignore, like:

"I'm the guy CEOs call when they've burned so much cash on marketing, their spouses think they have a coke habit. I'm like rehab for your brand, except instead of getting you clean, I get you profitable. It's why companies think of me as the Betty Ford Clinic of branding."

If your team can't complete this test,
your brand isn't just unclear. It lacks the tension necessary to stop people in their tracks.

And it becomes negotiable.

And negotiable brands get discounted.
