I've spent 25 years in software. I wrote more code in the last two weeks than all of them combined.
 
Here's the deal. I publish The Artificially Intelligent Enterprise Network a series of over 250,000 subscribers through beehiiv For months I've wanted to audit my publications and push drafts for editing directly from Claude. 
 
I am an AI-first kind of guy, and no software company was building it. 

[Side note: no shade on Beehiiv, they ship more features and do a lot better job than Kit whose rebrand did nothing for me and broke my sends with their vanity updates.]

So I built it myself.
 
An MCP server for Beehiiv. On first run, it worked. And the crazy thing? Once installed, I had full access to my Beehiiv data right from Claude. Here's my first analysis But I am still testing.
 
I didn't expect to be excited about writing code. Giddy, even. But here I am.
 
Quick explainer if you're not familiar: MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard from Anthropic that lets AI tools like Claude connect directly to outside services. Think of it like a universal adapter. Instead of copying and pasting between apps, Claude can talk directly to Beehiiv, pull my subscriber data, review posts, and push drafts — all without leaving the conversation.
 
It's the difference between AI that lives in a chatbox and AI that actually plugs into your workflow.
 
Here's the thing — I've never been the coder.
 
I've always been the marketer. The tech support guy. The dev rel program guy. The person who talked about software, not the one who built it.
 
I'm even an Apache Committer — a huge honor, but I'll be honest: my contributions were community and advocacy, not code.  If I were still active in that project, Claude Code and I would actually have something to offer. 😂
 
BUT in two weeks, I shipped:

I used Claude Code as my co-pilot. It handled the syntax. I handled the "what should this thing actually do."
 
And I have to say — I'm fascinated by what Claude Code makes possible. It's been a huge unlock for me.

That's not incremental. That's unbelievable.
 
THAT'S THE SHIFT.

AI adoption is nearly universal — over 92% of developers now use AI tools — but the productivity gains have stalled at around 10%. A landmark METR study found that experienced developers were actually 19% slower with AI assistants, while believing they were 24% faster. 

A Fortune survey of 6,000 global executives confirms the pattern: AI is everywhere except in the results. The problem isn't the technology. It's the absence of systems around the technology. Most people adopt AI tools superficially — bouncing between apps, copying and pasting between platforms, never building the reusable prompts, integrations, and workflows that turn occasional use into compounding proficiency.

Drawing on Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints and the systems philosophy from Atomic Habits, this Deep Dive argues that the bottleneck in AI productivity isn't generation — it's everything that happens after. I share my own experience going deep for a week: building reusable Skills, vibe-coding MCP plugins for Beehiiv and WordPress, and checking it all into GitHub. The takeaway: you won't rise to the level of your AI ambitions. You'll fall to the level of your AI systems.

That line from Atomic Habits has been rattling around my head for weeks — not because I'm trying to build better morning routines, but because it perfectly captures what's going wrong with how most of us are adopting AI.
We set ambitious goals. We'll use AI to write faster, code smarter, and automate everything. We download the apps. We pay for the subscriptions. We tell ourselves we're "AI-first." And then we fall to the level of our systems — which, for most of us, means no system at all.

I know this because I just caught myself doing it.

Today I asked Claude for text. It gave me a movie instead.

I was writing copy for @All Things AI — our second annual conference here in the Research Triangle.
For fun, I asked Claude to "tell the story of All Things AI in the style of the Star Wars opening scene."

I expected a paragraph of text with some dramatic flair.
BUT what I got was a fully animated HTML page.
Stars. Scrolling yellow text. The whole thing.
And here's the clever part — it made it Episode II. 
Because this is year two of All Things AI.

I never told it that. It just knew.

My theory? I've been doing so much coding in Claude lately that it figured HTML was my preferred language. So when I asked for something creative, it didn't just write copy. It built an experience.

THEREFORE, here's what I'm watching:
AI is moving from "do exactly what I say" to "anticipate what I'd actually want."
That's a subtle but massive shift.

We're not prompting tools anymore. We're collaborating with systems that are starting to learn how we think.
And honestly? It still catches me off guard.

When's the last time you took a train?

I've loved trains since I was a kid. My Lionel set ran on electric tracks around the Christmas tree, puffing real smoke. I thought that was the coolest technology on Earth.
Turns out I wasn't wrong.

Today I needed to drop off my RV about 80 miles from home. The old plan? Have someone follow me and drive me back. That's 160 miles of gas, two cars, and someone's entire afternoon.

Instead, I bought an Amtrak ticket. Thirteen dollars.

No Waymo in North Carolina. And even if there was, that's a $100+ fare. A train built on 200-year-old technology got it done for the price of lunch.
I walked through the historic Greensboro train station — gold leaf letters, original windows, beautiful woodwork. Then I sat down, pulled out my phone, and cranked out work with my AI agents.

Old architecture. New technology. Same seat.

No Slack pinging. No desktop notifications. No overstimulation. Just focused work while the countryside rolled by.

I rode with a couple from New Orleans, a man from Florida, and a college student from Texas. And a lady visiting her kids in Raleigh who can't drive anymore. The train isn't a novelty for her. It's how she sees her family.
Here's the thing — we keep chasing the new and forgetting what already works.


BUT if you're not skilled with Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini for Workspace yet, you're leaving money on the table. Those tools are already in your stack. Already paid for. AI agents are powerful. I'm using them, but sometimes the tech we already have is good enough.

It's the Amtrak problem. Everyone's booking the $100 Waymo that doesn't exist in their city while the $13 train is sitting right there.

As tech advances, I hope we never lose sight of the old tech that still runs the world.

Thirteen dollars. Eighty miles. Work done on the way back.

Stop hunting for the next breakthrough. Start using what's already on the tracks.
