Well, today was a GREAT day. It is a surreal moment, one that I had been working on for three years. I successfully defended my dissertation on how Hispanic tech founders convert their knowledge and networks into long-term business success.

My research introduced the "Beyond the Bootstrap" model: a roadmap for moving from survival-based businesses to a self-sustaining ecosystem of ownership and community stewardship.

The Bauer Executive DBA proudly celebrates the successful dissertation defense of Dr. Alfredo Arvide, whose research explores the deeper forces shaping Hispanic entrepreneurship in the United States.

In "Beyond the Bootstrap: Social and Cultural Capital in Hispanic Entrepreneurship", Dr. Arvide examines why high levels of Hispanic business formation do not always translate into scalable ventures or generational wealth. His qualitative research draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s framework of capital to investigate how entrepreneurs strategically convert social, cultural, and economic capital to navigate structural barriers and access growth opportunities.

Through interviews with founders across multiple high growth sectors, his work introduces the Beyond the Bootstrap Model, revealing how different forms of capital must be activated in sequence to build legitimacy, attract investment, and scale ventures.

Dr. Arvide’s defense was made even more meaningful by the presence of members of the practitioner-scholar community, including a fellow Executive DBA practitioner-scholar from Cohort 3 who contributed as a research interviewee. We also recognize the faculty mentors, committee members, colleagues at Blue People, and family who supported him throughout this journey.
