Last week was a rough one and one of firsts. The next few may be some of the hardest. 

Before getting into what happened I want to say a big thank you to my family, friends, clients, colleagues and the medical staff.

I’m so lucky and very grateful for my family. Especially my wife Joanna. I don’t even have words that can describe my appreciation and love for you. This wasn’t the plan and I don’t know what’s ahead but thank you for being there, to support and take care of me.  I love you. ❤️

Onto what happened…

I broke my leg Tuesday night, had surgery to repair it on Wednesday, sent home on Thursday.

I broke my tibia in multiple spots and they inserted a titanium rod through it so it would heal correctly. With some additional screws in my ankle and knee, I’m now to be completely off my feet for the next couple of weeks. After that, I imagine some physical therapy, lots of pain, and ups and downs. 

Never thought I’d find myself at 48 on crutches for the first time or having major surgery. I guess no one at any age does. But I truly am lucky for the ones around me who love and support me. I’m forever in your debt and will never forget all you have done for me and my family.

I just got off my second customer onboarding call for Trckly, and I'm still shaking a little.

Not from nerves (okay, maybe a little). But from validation.

It's been 15+ years since I released any kind of software. Back then, "customer insights" meant scribbled notes and gut feelings. 

Now? 

I'm using Cursor and Claude Code to analyze call transcripts, pull exact quotes, uncover patterns I missed in the moment, and organize everything right in my codebase.

The best part? These insights live where I build.

Customer pain points → feature requests. 
Exact quotes → marketing copy. 
Workflow patterns → onboarding improvements.

All accessible while I'm literally writing the code.

Is this what modern product development feels like? Because I'm not going back.

The dumbest $800 I ever spent saved my life.
And everyone who loved me called me an idiot for it.

2009. Recession crushing everything. Down to my last $1,000. Rent overdue. Electricity about to get cut.

Smart move? Pay the bills. Keep the lights on. Be responsible.

What I did instead? Blew $800 on a digital marketing certification from NYU.

My mom lost it. "You can't eat a certificate!"
My friends shook their heads. "Priorities, man."
My landlord wasn't impressed. "Degrees don't pay rent."

They were right. About everything.

What followed was brutal:

• 5 months unemployed
• Electricity shut off (ran an extension cord to the lobby to charge my laptop)
• 3 months behind on rent
• Living on ramen and hope
• Down to literally $7 in my pocket

I'd sit in the dark apartment, studying by laptop light, wondering if I'd just made the stupidest decision of my life.

Then Omniture called.

Not just any job. Higher salary than I'd ever seen. Stock options. Real opportunity.

Three months later, Adobe acquired Omniture. My stock converted.

Within 5 months, I went from $7 to six figures.

But here's what nobody tells you about betting on yourself:

It's not brave. It's terrifying.
It's not strategic. It's desperate.
It's not inspirational. It's survival.

Most people think the lesson is "invest in yourself."

BS. The real lesson?

When you're truly broke, you've got two choices:
1. Stay broke safely
2. Risk everything to stop being broke

One guarantees you'll still be in the same spot next year.
The other might change everything. Or destroy what's left.

I chose destruction over stagnation.

Because here's the thing about rock bottom - it's solid ground to build from.

That $800 wasn't an investment in education.
It was a declaration that I refused to accept this as my life.

Binary decision: You're either managing your current reality, or you're building your next one.

Sometimes the most irresponsible thing you can do with your last dollar is the responsible thing.

What's one "stupid" risk you took that everyone warned you against, but changed everything?

Saw a video that made me spit out my mushroom coffee.

This person's about to do a trust fall at the library. Arms spread. Eyes closed. Full commitment.

Their partner lets them hit the floor.

Then delivers the punchline: "At least you can trust your local public library to have your back."

Brutal. But also brilliant.

Here's the thing about trust falls: They're backwards.

You're practicing trusting other people when the real work is trusting yourself.

Most people spend their whole lives waiting for someone else to catch them. Looking for validation. Seeking permission. Hoping someone else believes in them first.

Spoiler: The only person who needs to believe in you is you.

But trusting yourself when you're doubting everything? That takes something most people never build.

Confidence.

Michael Gervais taught me this technique called "epic thoughts." 

Here's how it works:

Grab a pen. Write down one challenging thing you've overcome.
Then write what that gives you the right to say about yourself.

Example from my list:
• Challenge: Stayed sober through my darkest days
• What it gives me the right to say: "I can handle anything without numbing out"

That's not positive thinking BS. That's evidence.

Most people try to build confidence by lying to themselves.
"I'm amazing!" (You're not)
"I can do anything!" (You can't)
"Nothing can stop me!" (Everything can)

Epic thoughts are different. They're receipts.

Proof that you've already survived your worst days.
Evidence that you've got what it takes.
Documentation that you can trust yourself.

Try it right now. One challenge. One truth about yourself.

Because unlike that library trust fall, when you bet on yourself, you control the outcome.

Binary decision: You're either building evidence of your capability, or you're hoping someone else catches you.

I know which one I'm choosing.

This will piss off every 'Hustle Bro' but...

Your morning routine doesn't need to start at 4am.
Your inbox doesn't need to be at zero.
You don't need another productivity hack.

You need to stop.

I built a business working 80-hour weeks. Sleeping 4 hours. Mainlining caffeine. Living on adrenaline and anxiety.

"Sleep when you're dead," they said.
"Grind while they sleep," they preached.
"Hustle beats talent," they promised.

BS. All of it.

Know what that hustle got me?

Waking up at 3am with my heart racing. Anxiety so thick I couldn't breathe. Snapping at my kids over spilled milk because I was running on fumes. Skipping workouts because I "didn't have time" - had to hustle harder, close more deals, send more emails.

My body was breaking down.
My mind was falling apart.
My family was getting my worst.

All for what? Another zero in the bank account?

That's not success. That's self-destruction with a business card.

Here's what actually works:

‣ I work out at 9am. Every day.
Not 4:30am. Not before the sun rises. 9am. After I've had coffee. After I've dropped my kids at school. When my body's actually ready to perform.

‣ I say no to 90% of opportunities.
Every yes is a no to something else. Usually your health, family, or sanity.

‣ I stopped wearing exhaustion as a badge.
Being tired isn't a flex. It's a failure in planning.

The real shift happened when I changed my identity:

FROM: Someone who grinds harder than everyone
TO: Someone who sustains longer than everyone

Success isn't about who can suffer the most.
It's about who can show up the longest.

Because here's the real deal hustle culture won't tell you:

Discipline beats motivation.
Systems beat willpower.
Recovery beats grinding.
Identity beats everything.

I don't need to wake up at 4am to prove I want it.
I need to wake up healthy at 47 to prove I've got it.

Binary decision: You're either building a life that lasts, or you're building a highlight reel that ends in a hospital.

What toxic hustle culture advice are you finally ready to reject?

Unpopular truth: Personal branding is performative BS.

And AI just made it worse.

Now everyone can:
• Generate the "perfect" color palette for trust
• Filter their face until they're unrecognizable
• Sound like a thought leader without having a single original thought

The tools got better. The people got faker. 

But here's what AI can't fake: Character.

I watched a competitor copy my entire content strategy last month. Same topics. Same format. Even similar hooks.

Know what they couldn't copy?

The 3,806 days I've been sober.
The discipline of hitting the gym at 9am for three years straight.
The vulnerability of talking about losing my son.

That's character. And it shows up in everything.

Your character IS your brand. Here's how it actually works:

1. Character Creates Your Core
People don't follow expertise. They follow conviction. 
When someone says "I trust them because they're real," they're talking about character, not your color palette.

2. Everyone Has an Archetype (Whether They Know It or Not)
The Hero pushes you past your limits.
The Sage drops wisdom that changes perspectives.
The Rebel burns down what's broken.
The Caregiver builds you back up.
The Creator shows what's possible.

Most people try to be all five. That's why their brand feels scattered.

3. Your Habits Are Your Brand
My 9am gym time isn't just exercise. 
It's a public declaration of priorities. 
Your daily actions broadcast who you are louder than any LinkedIn post.

4. Your Beliefs Create Your Tribe
Strong brands polarize. 
They stand for something specific and against something else. 
If everyone likes you, no one remembers you.

5. Consistency Builds Trust, Not Content
When your Monday matches your Friday matches your worst day matches your best day, that's when people believe you.

See, everyone's out here trying to manufacture authenticity.

Meanwhile, authenticity is just doing what you said you'd do. 
Showing up how you said you'd show up. 
Being who you said you'd be.

No AI prompt can generate that.

Most "personal brands" are just people cosplaying as themselves. 
Curating their highlight reel. Performing for applause.

But character? Character is what you do when no one's watching. 
And somehow, everyone can tell.

Binary decision: Build a brand people admire, or build character people trust.

So I'm curious, which archetype do you think I am? And more importantly, which one are you?

$1,000 felt like real money.
Until I learned what real money looked like.

One phone call. One question. And suddenly I was staring at a $25,000 check for the exact same work.

I was charging $1,000 for digital marketing audits. Solid work. Fair price. Paying the bills.

Then a PE firm called.

"We need you to audit a company we're looking at."

Standard request. Standard fee. Until they asked about budget.

"We're deciding whether to drop $40 million on this acquisition. What do you need to de-risk our decision?"

De-risk. Their words, not mine.

That's when it hit me, I wasn't doing marketing audits anymore.
I was protecting $40 million decisions.

So I said $10,000.

They countered: "Can you do three for $25,000?"

Same audit. Same time. Same me.
25x the price.

Here's what changed: Nothing but the story.

When you're auditing marketing, you're worth $1,000.
When you're de-risking acquisitions, you're worth $25,000.

The work didn't change. The context did.

Most people are stuck selling their time when they should be selling their impact:

• Consultants billing hours instead of transformations
• Coaches counting sessions instead of breakthroughs  
• Freelancers pricing projects instead of outcomes
• Experts explaining process instead of preventing disasters

You want to make real money? Stop telling people what you do.
Start telling them what they get.

Know what I realized standing there after that call?

Nobody pays for your expertise.
They pay for their peace of mind.

Binary decision: You're either pricing your process, or you're pricing their outcome.

One keeps you grinding. The other changes everything.
