Same email list. Same product. Same launch timeline.

The difference? We stopped treating everyone the same.

Past customers got different emails than first-time buyers. They already trust Pat. They don't need 10 emails convincing them he's awesome and knows his stuff. They just need to know the offer exists.

Engaged subscribers got different messaging than people who hadn't opened in months. No point sending urgency emails to people who aren't reading.

Now you just need to document it, systematize it, and let it run while you focus on growth.

The sales process that's in your head? It can be automated. Not all of it. But the 80% that's repetitive. So you can focus your energy on the 20% that actually needs you.

But automation isn't your first step. You need to know what to automate first.

Investing time in LinkedIn comments and Substack Notes is valuable, but don't forget about your email list. 

If it's sitting idle, you might be missing out on engaging with your audience effectively. 

The audience that wants to hear from you. 

Think of it this way…

You're standing outside your store with a sandwich board while customers inside are looking for help. 

Make sure to balance your efforts and provide the support your audience needs.

You've got a welcome sequence. You're sending emails. The basics are in place.

Now it's time to get strategic.

Here's the one question that changes everything:

What do your customers have in common?

Is there a problem most of them share? A challenge? A motivating factor? Maybe they're all at a similar stage in their business or share a specific goal.

Find that common thread. Then build your segmentation question from it.

Keep it simple. Ask new subscribers one question right after they opt in.

If you want to be lazy and not review your customers (your choice), you could use this one 👇

"What's your #1 goal with [your topic] right now?"

Give them 3-4 options. Ask them to reply with their answer.

Now you know what they actually want. And you can send them content that matches.

This isn't about fancy tools or complex automation. You can do this with a simple reply-based email.

But here's the thing...

This only matters if you're in the right phase. If you don't have basics in place yet, segmentation is a distraction.

You're really good at growing your list.

And it might be the worst thing that's happened to your business.

Here's what I mean...

Every new subscriber joins excited. They wanted what you promised. They were ready to hear from you.

But there's no welcome sequence. No pitch. No conversion system.

So they wait. And wait. And go cold.

By the time you launch something, half of them have mentally checked out. They're not opening anymore. They forgot why they signed up.

You didn't build an asset. You built an expense.

I've seen this pattern so many times. Someone with 15,000 subscribers making $2,000/month. Meanwhile, someone with 2,000 subscribers is making $8,000/month.

The difference? The smaller list has conversion systems. The bigger list is just... bigger.

Here's the counterintuitive advice...

Stop growing. Just for 30 days. Take the effort you'd put into list growth and build the systems that convert the subscribers you already have.

Then turn the growth back on.

- Clicked on a sales page link
- Replied to an email
- Opened 5+ emails in a row
- Clicked multiple links in the same email

These people are paying attention and showing buying signals. 

Create a tag for "high intent." Anyone who does 2+ of these behaviors gets that tag.

Now you know who to focus on.

Your "Closer" instincts are right. Some people are ready to buy. The trick is finding them before you waste time on everyone else.

As Director, I was tasked with taking the Cape Town arm of TouchBasePro and establishing a resounding footprint in Africa and abroad.

This resulted in positive nett growth, an increase YoY in all MRR product revenues, and reduced churn, along with key staff retention by implementing skillset growth initiatives.

So, what do I actually do, you may ask? By day, my official role is Commercial Lead at Prebo Digital. We're one of Africa's premier digital performance agencies, where our team of experts and I help companies in various industries, both B2B and B2C, create returns from their paid media, SEO, marketplace advertising, and conversion-rate enhancement.

My role in the organisation is to lead and solve problems for our team and customers while looking after client relationships, both locally and internationally. We do this by providing expert digital strategy and guidance, helping brands and businesses solve problems in creating measurable returns on their digital marketing.

In addition, I also ensure the company reaches its revenue and expansion goals by opening doors with partners and clients, along with strategically assisting in the company's marketing and vision. This all leads to Prebo Digital's growth and my getting paid to do what I'm (pretty) good at.

By night...though I'd love to call myself the Batman- I help businesses and content creators make the most out of their email learning and communication. Having been in the digital and marketing space for more than 13 years, and having studied my marketing BBA, I put my skills to use by helping businesses and content creators with email advice, strategy and resources designed to help them grow.
