Looks like Gartner has missed the mark again with this year’s Magic Quadrant for Customer Data Platforms, third year running.

Quite a few placements are difficult to reconcile with what we see in the market:

Hightouch goes from invisible for four years to a “Leader” overnight. Either the category shifted dramatically in 12 months, or this MQ (also quite new) is already lagging in understanding the composability shift in the enterprise. 

Salesforce ranked near the top remains problematic. Given their commercial influence across the analyst ecosystem, it’s increasingly hard to separate product merit from spend. 

Uniphore in the top right, after acquiring ActionIQ, is particularly strange. This is fundamentally a contact centre platform now being treated as a core CDP leader....

It's not all bad though: 

Zeta exiting makes sense. It's structurally adtech, not a true CDP.

Rokt mParticle falling out reflects the lack of category momentum post-acquisition.

Redpoint there's no growth there. 

But there's a bigger issue with this analyst approach to Martech categories. 

These reports are reinforced by vendors for product marketing, increasingly ignored by enterprise buyers (we see this every day), and disconnected from how platforms are actually evaluated in live implementations.

The next generation of executives now prefer peer benchmarks, first-party data, and practitioner evidence, not analyst scorecards.

For a kid growing up in government-provided housing for a family of 5 with two disabled parents, I'm pretty sure there's no other country on Earth that takes care of its citizens like Australia. 

Two years ago, my dad had a heart attack. He's a pensioner who hasn't worked for 40 years. He got top-of-the-range healthcare, post-care support, and a nurse who would visit him twice a week for $0. 

I did my university degree through a HELP program that didn't saddle me with crushing debt, just a small monthly payment that goes out of my salary pre-tax. 

The costs to employ people in Australia are much lower than in most other places, significantly increasing our ability to continue to double revenue each year at TMW.

TMW uses a bunch of Australian startups that help us access the global markets, talent, customers, and vendors. All of which have added so much value. 

Hell yeah, I'm proud of Australia. 

We are living in the most livable place in the world at the very pinnacle of human accomplishment.... In a country that hasn't turned its back on its citizens. 

Think about that.

I'm a little nervous.

We're in the early stages of building out TMW's customer lifecycle. 

The first part is getting our campaign process revamped and documented. 

And today, when we did a workshop on this, I was reminded by how much marketing is upheld not by tech, data, creativity, or the personality of your CMO....

But by the discipline you cherish and enforce in the marketing practice. 

There are no overnight wins in marketing; it's a patient act of getting a little bit better every day.

Sticking to timelines 
Adhering to boundaries
Regular reporting

It's all discipline. 

Kinda like going to the gym. You'll hurt yourself if you try to lift the 150 kgs on the bench press on the first go. 

Similarly, with marketing, you'll burn out trying to do something you could only do after years of building a foundation of discipline. 

So that's why I'm a little nervous... I'll have to be better than ever at sticking to discipline. 

If you're sitting there thinking that your marketing is broken, maybe the first thing to do is reset your disciplines.
