Crying over Pineapple upside down cake. 

My birthday passed last week. I turned 33. 

My wife made a really cute supper. 

Everything was set up like a restaurant. 

Menus, signs, my kids in adorable aprons. 

I got wonderful gifts. 

I would have been happy even if I hadn’t. 

I don’t make a big deal about my birthday anymore. 

I used to. 

Hence the Pineapple Upside down cake. 

I skipped 8th grade and regressed a lot socially. 

I became really annoying and didn’t have much of a personality. 

I knew nobody really liked me. 

I was in a small class in a small school. 

I wasn’t anyone’s first choice. 

Guys used to collect money for birthday gifts. 

I got it in my head that if I got a gift that means someone cared about me. 

9th grade- nothing. I was devastated. 

I had contributed to everyone else’s gifts. 

No one collected for me. 

After that I decided I would collect. 

If I did something “nice” then it would be appreciated…

And reciprocated…

Right?

(Sorry past me. That’s called manipulation 👍🏻)

Wrong. 

10th & 11th grade- nothing. 

I flew off the handle. 

I’d get dramatic and mopey around my birthday. 

It wasn’t depression exactly. 

Definitely not like depression I’ve experienced in adulthood. 

It was this overwhelming anxiety. Loneliness. 

I felt broken. 

Undesirable. Unlikable. 

If they really knew me they wouldn’t like me. 

They already didn’t like me. 

I was definitely unpleasant to be around. 

Tony Robbin’s says that every communication is either a cry for help or a call to connection. 

This was both. 

I was in so much pain. Academically, personally, and more than anything socially. 

Don’t get me wrong- I had friends. 

I was so focused on what I didn’t have. 

Not everyone liked me. 

My class. 

The group. 

The cool kids. 

12th grade-

I sat in my room. 
(I dormed for a decade. 13-23)

Metal bed-frame and white cinderblock walls. 

I wasn’t probably playing something in Nintendo DS. 

Pokemon or Mario 64 🤔

That or reading. 

My entire class came into my room with a 9x13 pan. 

I was completely caught off guard. 

They peeled back the tinfoil to reveal a pineapple upside down cake. 

It was a box mix with canned pineapples but it felt like the most expensive artisanal patisserie to me. 

At that moment I was glad they finally did something. 

Looking back I’m impressed with them. 

They did something kind despite my unpleasantry. 

That kindness may have been a step towards me growing up. 

Emotionally maturing. Socially evolving. 

Sometimes all you need is for someone to answer your cry for help. 

To hear you. See you. 

Then you can begin to hear and see yourself. 

Sometimes it’s a conversation. 

Sometimes it’s a 9x13 of pineapple upside down cake.
