Senior Cyber Security Engineer

2d Communications Squadron, United States Air Force

Subject Matter Expert (SME) for cyber security and compliance in support HQ AFGSC, HQ 8AF, 2d Bomb Wing and associated tenant units.  Leads 17 personnel focused on comprehensive information protection serving as one of two assigned Information System Security Managers (ISSM).  Collaborates to ensure policy compliance to DoD policy, Air Force guidance,  and industry best practice standards utilizing defense industry standard processes as well as civilian mechanisms. Maintained the accreditation of two separate networks totally 16K users.  Directly responsible for the administration and management of Risk Management Framework (RMF), computer security (COMPUSEC), TEMPEST (formerly known as emission security EMSEC),  and DoD 8570 compliance programs .  Additionally, serves as the cyber security representative for the installation Threat Working Group (TWG).

NCOIC, Wing Cybersecurity Office

Subject Matter Expert (SME) for cyber security and compliance in support of  DoD/CIO's Department of Defense Cybersecurity Culture and. Compliance Initiative (DC3I) and Command Cyber Readiness Inspection (CCRI) requirements. It is pre-Friday and It is a beautiful day here in Dallas.  Its time again for some more #unpopularopinion: #DataSecAI is the wake-up call cybersecurity needed.

Everyone keeps talking about AI like it’s some new frontier in cybersecurity.

But here’s skeleton in the closet…AI isn’t changing security…AI is exposing how bad we’ve been at securing data all along.

For years we acted like “data security” was a niche discipline.
A checkbox.
A compliance slide.
Something you throw at the DLP team and hope for the best.

Then GenAI showed up…
And suddenly we realized our data sprawl is massive.
Our controls are shallow.
Our governance is duct tape.
And our guardrails were built for an era where humans were the only ones reading sensitive information.

DataSecAI is the first conference I have found where people finally said the quiet part out loud: If we don’t get data security right, AI will punish us for it.

Not because AI is malicious: but because AI is fast, blind, literal, and obedient.

Feed it garbage, it scales garbage.
Expose it to sensitive data, it memorizes sensitive data.
Point it at the wrong repository, and it will happily turn your entire crown-jewel dataset into a training example.

But here’s the hype part:

If we do this right, AI becomes the greatest force-multiplier data security has ever had.

Automated classification.
Self-healing controls.
Real-time anomaly detection.
Adaptive access models that react faster than humans can even read the alert.

This isn’t the death of cybersecurity. This is the rebirth of it; rooted not in firewalls or dashboards, but in data intelligence, precision, and actual visibility.

So yeah, #unpopularopinion:

DataSecAI isn’t “another AI conference.” It’s the moment security finally realized the future isn’t securing systems; it’s securing the information those systems breathe.

I have a dual role that is responsible for the Client Services departments at both UC Irvine Health and UC San Diego Health. At both organizations I’m the director for the Field Support, Service Desk, Enterprise Workstation, and ServiceNow/ITSM groups. Additionally, at UC Irvine Health, I’m responsible for Medical Device Integration, Citrix, and Innovation. In total, I have 9 direct reports with a total scope of 110+ positions.

Notable Achievements:
-Lead multiple work streams for the migration of UCSD to Epic Hosting (from self-hosting) and UCI to Epic (from All Scripts)
-Implemented a shared ServiceNow instance and aligned ITSM processes (Incident, Request, Problem, and Change) for both UC Irvine Health and UC San Diego Health. Additionally, established and chaired an ITSM Committee.
-Oversaw the merging of UC Irvine and UC San Diego’s Client Services teams with a major focus on a single service desk. 
-Responsible for the planning, monitoring, and reporting on 15m+ in Operating and 5m+ Capital budgets
-Worked with other UC colleagues to negotiate vendor standards and system wide pricing, resulting in 2m+ in annual system savings. 
-Developed and maintained C level reports that included KPIs and SLA/OLA statistics
-Drove substantial Customer Service improves by building a culture of Service Excellence. Current CSAT is 4.90/5.
-Drove continual efficiency improvements and waste reduction leveraging Lean 6 Sigma methodology.
-Brought new technology developed by the Innovation team to market

Director of Client Services and Innovation

As the Manager and then later Sr. Manager of Client Services & Innovation, I oversaw almost all of the front facing IT teams. In this role, I instituted a culture of Service Excellence where staff were able to make the connection between their role and the mission and values of UCI Health. Starting in 2015, I was fortunate enough to found an Innovation team that focused on solving the business’ problems. 

Notable Achievements:
- Oversaw all endpoint support for ~9,000 computers, ~2,000 printers, ~4,500 mobile devices in a multi-location environment.
-Directed all client management including Image Management, Client Group Policies, Client Management Software (Altiris & SCCM), Application Deployments, Client Inventory, and Custom Client Development.
-Successfully managed multidisciplinary large scale projects and migrations such as Office 2010 rollout, Windows 7 migration, new hospital build out and move, endpoint encryption, mobile device management system, enterprise wide notification system, computer badge access system, custom scanner rule engine (for KMBA), custom Citrix logoff solution, and other key projects.
- Responsible for planning and execution of multi-million dollar projects which are dependences for key EMR activations.
-Lead early implementation of mobile BYOD, including custom integration with NAC. (Several articles were written about our innovative approach)
-Designed and implemented an inventory system for all devices (PC and Printer) and built automation workflow around the data to allow for one-touch deployments.
-Worked directly with vendors to negotiate the best pricing for IT purchases and contracts.
- Implemented ITIL v3 framework.
- Administrated complete device lifecycle initiative (leveraging Dell Leasing) for entire environment. (5.6M)
-Produced new innovated systems for clinical care and organizational growth yielding in 4m+ annual revenue increases. Oversaw the early go to market strategy of some of these new technologies.

- Project manager for QUEST (Electronic Medical Records) hardware implementation ($1.3M).
- Designated support to CEO/CFO/CIO and Chancellor.
- Manages hardware implementation team.
- Coordinates projects and primarily responsible for technology related logistics.
- Works closely with HSIS Management as well as management representatives.
- Provides technical analysis and support for all activities related to desktop computer systems, networks and related   peripherals.

- Develops and maintains a detailed schedule for the acquisition and implementation of hardware.  Duties include: product selection, department approvals, vendor and contractor bidding, contract award, daily progress monitoring, and reporting to CIO.
- Designed the EMR charting workstation for 460+ exam rooms to meet the physician’s needs.

- Improve processes and procedures for the support of 6000+ workstations.
- Produce and maintain a single image for deployment on a variety of hardware sets.
