I have three sons and I’m intentional about what I teach them manhood means. 95% of it comes down to this (hat tip to Andrew Peterson):

- make a plan
- look at what you’re interested in 
- get disciplined about something

- allow for the possibility that you have something important to contribute to the world and that the world would be a lesser place w/o that contribution

- don’t be afraid of taking on responsibility
- it’s where you find what sustains you in life

The kindest thing you can do when leading others is to give them a crystal clear definition of done… aka DoD

Meaning, when you’re delegating 

You clearly state:

This project is done when “_________”

Ex: This project is done when the proposal is complete by Friday morning, has all of the relevant information for our internal team, and answers the top 3 questions and concerns.”

1 tip on how to use this:

Facts, feelings, functionality

If you’re DoD covers the facts (what has to be true), the feelings (how people will feel), and the functionality (how it will be used) when it’s done then you’ve appropriately given someone a DoD. 

Game changer if you’ve delegated only to get work back halfway complete. Mostly bc it was unclear what you were asking for to start with…

What’s a piece of online wisdom that’s always felt off to you? Something you’ve read or seen that you disagree with. 

Sharing three below: 

1.  “Follow your passion and it will all work out”

Sometimes passion is developed over decades. Sometimes passions change. Sometimes you just need to do whatever is in front of you and keep paying attention to what lights you up inside. And sometimes the things you’re passionate about don’t work out and it’s time to find a new passion.

2.  “Don’t take no for an answer”

No is often the best answer and opens doorways to new opportunities. And, sometimes if you keep going when told no, it’s just freakin weird. 

3.   “Just be authentic”

This is not an excuse to say whatever you want. I get being honest and clear around your convictions. I don’t get just doing and saying what you want bc that’s “who you are”.

As a young man, the things that shaped me into the executive and leader I am today are; the time I spent in the United States Army, learning what it meant to serve, and the fast-paced education I received from both schooling and mentorship. I had an awesome few days at UHP this week.  Great meetings and the future looks bright for collaborative work between Hiring Our Heroes and UHP. Healthcare Innovator, Educator, & Entrepreneur | Tillman Scholar | Retired Army Green Beret

I enrolled in the Certified Personal Trainer and Integrative Health Coach courses at UHP expecting to leave with a few new certifications.

I left with something far more meaningful: A new family of military-connected, service-minded leaders committed to empowering others to be their best version. 

As a doctoral-trained behavioral health specialist, some might see a personal training and health coaching certification as a step backward. But knowledge does not change behavior. Presence does. Listening does. Partnership does. No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. 

Healthcare has long trained us to diagnose, prescribe, and direct. Coaching taught me to pause, to create space, and to trust the human being in front of me as the expert in their own life. It reinforced that sustainable change is not imposed. It is evoked.

Over the course of six weeks, our diverse group of veterans did more than learn frameworks and techniques. We held space for one another. We listened without trying to fix. We witnessed growth, courage, and vulnerability in real time.

This experience deepened my belief that the future of healthcare lies not only in clinical expertise, but in our ability to walk alongside others as they discover their own capacity for change. And perhaps along the way we unlock the human potential we had within us all along.

Grateful to UHP, the staff, and my fellow coaches for an experience I will carry forward for the rest of my life.
