7 months ago, someone left a sizable dent on the right side of my 4Runner. Clearly opened the door w/ some velocity. 

Found it on my way out from church. 

Could have happened anytime. 

My 5 year old was so confused. 

“Dad, why didn’t they leave a note, how are you going to forgive them if you don’t know who it was?”

I told him I didn’t know. But that it was okay.

Then educated him and my other sons on taking ownership and leaving a note w/ your phone number. 

The 5 year old pipes up again…

“Dad, I have an idea, let’s write a note and put it on the car so they might see it. And it can say ‘we forgive you, next time leave a note with your phone number so we can forgive you in person and you know you’re forgiven’”…

The whole episode was worth the dent. 

“Etress’s love the Lord” is a family mantra. 

And if loving God means forgiving others

We’re doing alright in my book…

Multiple lessons wrapped up in one. 

- Take ownership. 
- Offer forgiveness. 
- Find people and let them know their forgiven. 

Pretty sure this is how God treated me by sending his son Jesus. Or at least part of how imagine it. 

Otherwise, I’m just a guy leaving dents all over the place. Now, I’m the guy forgiving them. If you follow the analogy. 

And now I’m teaching my sons to do the same. 

How can I not forgive. 

When I’ve been forgiven so much in life.

A million dollar skill: Making things right by taking full ownership, apologizing specifically, asking for forgiveness, and then acting accordingly. 

Not easy. But best and most effective.

Even if it's hard.

I’m sharing 2 secrets about LinkedIn (and life in general) that can radically alter how you experience this platform.

And right or wrong, I truly believe you can become a top 10% creator here by following this exact model.

Here it is. 

1. Show up repeatedly for six months

Show people you’re trustworthy, principled, courageous, competent, loyal, kind, understanding, forgiving, and unselfish. 

In every single interaction w/ others here, be on the list above. 

Do it when you post, connect, DM, comment. 

Do it when you connect in person. Do it at events. Do it when you have calls. Do it all the time. Do it on repeat.

And whatever you do. Don’t stop doing it. 

Now to secret #2: 

Go first. And go positive. 

98% of humans here will mirror your energy and engagement. 

2% will mock you. Think less of you. Talk behind your back. 2% will leave snarky, cynical, confusing and often weird comments. 

2% will think you’ve lost it. 

But 98%. 

They’ll trust you. 

And over a long enough time horizon, they’ll recommend you. They’ll hire you. They’ll support you. They’ll buy your products. They’ll tag you on items relevant to your life and business. They’ll pass along opportunities. They’ll make connections for you. 

They’ll do exactly what you’ve done for them. 

Over and over and over again. 

So that’s it. Those are the secrets. 

Almost always, nearly every time, the vast majority of the time… when you do this constantly over a very long period of time. 

It’s nearly impossible to lose.

I really believe in the power of LinkedIn, and honestly, I don't care if this post gets 2 comments, 20, or 200, or if it gets any likes or engagement at all.

But if it helps someone I'm serving accomplish their goal, then that's a huge win for me and, and in my opinion, the whole community. 

It means LinkedIn is working.

It means LinkedIn is building and growing the wider network of relationships to help people get things done. It means it matters to be here.

So here's the ask:

Do you know an operator in the construction, concrete repair, specialty trades, self-performing crews, or industrial services space doing $7-15 million who has an abundance mentality and would be willing to share what's worked for them?

Someone who remembers what it took to get there and is open to a short call or conversation.

If so, I'd love a comment, tag, or DM.

And I'll forward this to my client so they can reach out directly.

If nothing comes of it, that's fine too. But I believe this place is special.

And I think most of you...

Do too.

The pastor of one of the largest and most influential churches in our city was leading a leadership training. Maybe 40 of us in attendance. 

The man was leading a congregation of 4,000+, writing books, speaking at conferences, preaching 3-4x a week. 

I was 26. 

He told us to find 4 mentors one, two, or three stages ahead of us in life. In areas you’re interested in exploring. 

He said:

Ask them to coffee, provide them w/ questions in advance, and tell them you’d set it up with their EA’s and meet them at a location near them or at their office and on their schedule.  

He said to go for the highest level leaders you could find. 

He said, if it went well, ask them if you could do this 2-3x a year and call them 1x a year if you had something to run by them. 

I left the training. And immediately setup a meeting w/ him for the earliest his calendar would allow. 

I was new to the city. 

When I met with him, I asked him if he would personally connect me to 4 of the best leaders he knew in business, politics, and ministry. 

He did. Email intros went out that week. 

One became a lifetime spiritual mentor. 

One became my future boss. 

And taught me how to be a COO. 

One taught me how to raise 4 kids. 

One taught me how to lead a team. 

I’m not sure if I got lucky. Or was in the right place at the right time. Or took just enough action to change the trajectory of my life. 

But what I do know is this was the single best piece of advice I got in my 20’s. 

And the single piece of advice I’d give someone in their 20’s now who wants to do something big w/ their life. 

Nah, not everyone’s gonna be in the same position I had above. But sometimes you gotta make your own luck. 

And trust God in the process. 

So if you’re young and hungry and fired up. 

Find a way, some way, to make this happen.

Whatever it takes. 

Just keep going. 

Until you find them.

Facts: Realizing how few people think about you (at all) is one of the most freeing ideas/concepts in life.

For most. This frightens them. 

For others. It frees them. 

From personal experience, 

I much prefer the latter.

15 Tiny Habits to take your life off hard mode.

Pick one, master it, stack another.

- 7-8 hrs/sleep
- Learn to say no
- 8,000 steps a day
- Automate your savings
- Ten pages of daily reading
- 5-10 grams of creatine a day
- Avoid the news (or most of it)
- 12oz of water when waking up
- Limit poison intake (aka alcohol)
- Build and follow a simple budget
- Weekly coffee w/ 3-4 close friends
- Tell someone you love them everyday 
- 15-min weekly review and planning time
- Timeblock your workouts (strength + cardio)
- Turn off notifications except texts & voicemails

Life is hard on its own.

Much less playing Hall of Fame mode.

Keep it simple. Stack your habits. 

And win more often.

- traveled to a client producing $160 million in revenue to see the facilities and production, spent a half day mapping his personal vision for his life the next 90 days 

- mapped the top 5 people, process, and project challenges w/ another client at $5 Million targeting breakthrough to $7 and then $10 million top line

 - navigating a series of complex challenges w/ another client, helping spur on an increased cadence of accountability and connection w/ their team, vision for the future, and directly responsible individuals tackling each challenge 

And…

- two hours consulting a 300+ team member org on how to successfully pursue their desired outcomes and goals systematically by taking action on the highest leverage activities 

- mapping a framework and solution w/ two co- founders facing rapid growth. Understanding levers to scale when it comes to people and excellence and ownership.

These humans are in the game.
Investing in and pursuing a life that matters

Reminding them they can do more w/ less,
faster and better than they ever imagined. 

Reminding them:

- they’re good leaders and good leaders lead

And reminding myself.

This instantly pulls you into rare tiers of growth and impact. A rare combination few humans possess and even fewer utilize. 

The 3 piece combo is a skill. 

Like woodworking, welding, public speaking…

You can develop it from scratch. You can practice it everywhere. And the downside is close to zero. 

❌ enter a room, hands in pocket, waiting for others to introduce themselves, solemn expression

✅ enter a room, hands comfortably at you raise, you step toward people, smile and introduce yourself, ask questions and repeat 

No this isn’t about introversion or extroversion. 

It’s about initiating w/ positive intent 

❌ boss voices a challenge, you have an idea but you wait to share out of fear, someone else steps in to take on the project

✅ boss voices a challenge, you voice an idea and belief it can be solved, you attack it w/ rigor and positive energy

Again, this isn’t brown nosing. It’s tackling something w/ positive energy, being first to the ball, and doing it on repeat. 

There are 100’s of examples. 

My main point thogh - this is a skill. This skill accelerates your life. There’s opportunities to apply it in low stakes environments everyday. 

Be positive. 

Go first. 

Do it constantly.

Let’s jump in. 

Step 1: Competence equals confidence.

Think of a task you feel uncertain about, ask to be retrained or coached on this task. You’re probably doing great. And need to hear that.

Or, you may be doing poorly. And need coaching to improve your results. Either way, it’s a win. 

Try this: 

“Hey boss, I’m not feeling confident with X, when is the soonest I can be coached on this to ensure I’m performing at a high level?”


Step 2: Ask your leader to prioritize for you 

You’re list is full. It’s overwhelming. You don’t know where to start or what matters most. 

Rank your projects from most to least important. Then, ask your manager if it’s in the right order and what, if anything, they’d move up the list. 

Try this: 

“Hey boss, my plate is full and I want to make sure I’m focused on the right things, can you look over my priority list w/ me to see if I’m on the right track?”


Step 3: Glass balls vs Rubber balls

What can you drop, and two weeks later it bounces back up (rubber). Or what ball if you drop, shatters on the floor (glass). 

Put a G or an R by every task on your list

Try this:

“Hey boss, is there anything I’m working on right now that if I do in two weeks, it’s still okay? I’m working hard to focus on what matters most”

That’s covers it. 

- competence equals confidence
- ask your leader prioritize for you 
- glass balls or rubber balls 

Do these three things and watch your anxiety levels come down.

I have a friend whose closet looks like a sneaker museum. Rare Jordans still in boxes. He can tell you the story behind every collaboration, every limited run. He's not flipping them or trying to impress anybody. He just loves understanding the whole sneaker landscape. 

Then there's my multi-athlete friend. Basketball shoes. Running shoes. Hiking boots. Each pair exists for a reason. He doesn't care what's trending. He just cares what works.

Some people are collecting. Bookmarking every tool. Reading comparisons. Watching demos. Binging the YouTubes. They know what exists and what's coming next. But they're stuck evaluating instead of using, because there's always one more option to consider. You know more than most people but somehow still feel further behind.

Others are chasing whatever just launched. Early on ChatGPT. Then Claude. Then Gemini. On to the next. They’ve generated images with every imaginable tool. Genuinely excited. But they never get deep enough to extract real value before they move on.

The cost here is credibility. Recommend 4 tools in a quarter, abandon all of them, and eventually people tune you out. Curiosity turns into noise fast, right?

Then there are the problem solvers. They ignore all of it until something breaks. A report takes too long. Notes are chaos. A process eats hours. That's when AI matters to them. They’re not here for exploration, they’re about that execution.

But the timing tradeoff is real. By the time the proof is obvious, the advantage is gone. You're not ahead. You're just catching up to the new baseline.

These modes don't just live in different people. They show up in the same meetings. One person endlessly mapping. Another selling the future. Still another just trying to finish the week. Connection = nil.

And they can live inside the same person. 🫣 

I collect to understand what's possible. But I experiment because staying current matters in my life & work. I also execute, because results move things forward.

The danger isn't being one of these. It's drifting into a mode without knowing why I’m there.

Am I researching because it's necessary, or because it feels productive while I avoid a decision? Experimenting because something's better for real, or because new feels like momentum? Executing because it's time, or because pausing feels like stagnation?

To make actual progress, I believe it’s important to name which mode we’re in. We need to know why we’re there and pivot when it stops working.

Sometimes you map before you move. Sometimes you move before you're ready. Sometimes you block out the noise and just make one thing work.

The real question isn't which type you are.

It's which mode you're in right now, and whether that's what this moment needs. And...are you there on purpose or just out of habit? I ask myself this because if I can’t name the mode, I can’t change the outcome.

Which mode scares you the most right now? That might be the one you need.
