Nine years ago I was the guy who was too shy to speak to people at networking events. Even when I did pluck up the courage, it felt all people valued was my job title or my budget rather than me as a person.

I knew I wanted to meet other marketers and learn about marketing in a safe space, so when I couldn't find it, I made it.

The Marketing Meetup is a positively lovely community for marketers. (Basically, we all look after each other and treat one another as people first 😊)

Through good luck and hard work, in the years since, I (as part of a big team effort!) have built a global community of 50,000+ lovely marketers with a social following of 250k+.

THE POWER OF MARKETING - JAGUAR STYLE

I will be honest last Friday was pretty much a dream day for me

Growing up as a car nerd my dream car was an E-type and my idea of a perfect day out was driving to the NEC motor show to photograph the XJ220 which was at the time the fastest car on the planet

Imagine my excitement when the team at JLR invited me up to have a drive in the new Jaguar on their test track, interview their MD Rawdon Glover about how the launch is going and join them for their 'Power of Marketing' day

Next week I will be releasing the interview with Rawdon and some very special behind the scenes footage with Rory Sutherland as he reacts to his first drive in the car - let's just say it's on another level 🔥 

The sessions were very inspiring 

⭐ Lennard Hoornik the Chief Commercial Officer on why you can copy their design but you can't copy how their cars make you feel

⭐ Johnny Hornby on how they plan to combine AI with creativity in what he describes as 'human intelligence'

⭐ Noel Mack telling the epic story of Gymshark and how success was down to putting their towels down first on so many occasions 

⭐ Rory Sutherland on the surprising ways in which Engineers and Marketers find similar solutions to problems

Huge thank you to Simon Pick and Ken McConomy for being the consummate hosts and allowing us to capture the magic they are making

And to Anna Cairns and Kerry Collinge who have been planning this for a long time

Lastly production supremo James M. who juggled so much on the day and told me in the car on the way up 'I am banning you from having any more ideas about this day' as he could tell I was getting carried away and as always cares so much that the end result is perfect

Oh and having driven in the car you should believe what they say - the car is even better looking in the flesh and drives like nothing I have ever experienced.

AN ORIGINAL BRITISH BRIEFING

I love watching the BA safety video before a flight as it's brilliantly entertaining and beautifully crafted

But now the incredible team at Uncommon Creative Studio have taken the idea to another level entirely and turned the safety video into a briefing on how to escape the crushing pressures of every day life

The craft in this film is on point, it is Uncommon after all, but there are 3 things I particularly admire from a marketing perspective

✈️  Firstly the insight. 

It's impossible to watch this and not smile at all the relatable situations. The reason we go on holiday is to escape these every day pressures. This creates an immediately emotional response when I watch it.

✈️  Secondly the consistency.

It's a completely new film and yet the idea is simply an evolution of what they created with the safety video. They have just taken the idea upstream.

Rather than pre-flight entertainment this is pre-booking entertainment

✈️  Thirdly the Distinctiveness.

All the distinctive elements are there too. The music, the originality, the staff, the doors, the logo up front. It's another British Original.

In fact anyone who has read The Creative Dividend* from System1 that was released at Cannes last year will be familiar with the summary 

Emotion + Fluency + Consistency

Ok I admit it, I have a pretty cool job

One of my highlights last year was interviewing Rawdon Glover on Uncensored CMO to get the inside track on the thinking behind *that* new Jaguar - the car everyone is talking about!

Well this year we're going one better

The team have invited me and producer James M. back to be driven in the car and learn more about the Luxury 4 door GT prototype and the team behind it

Hopefully it will be a little warmer than the -40deg winter testing the team have just come back from (but how good do the pictures look!)

Just to make things a little more interesting we have a special guest joining us too

None other than Rory Sutherland himself who we know is a big fan and will be on hand to offer his assessment

This will be one very special day and one very special podcast

WHY GYMSHARK IS SO SUCCESSFUL

In the latest episode of Uncensored CMO I was very excited to be joined by Carly Natalizia their Chief Commercial Officer

We cover a lot of ground from how she went from finance to marketing to what it's like opening a brand new store in New Year

This clip here when Carly talks about what it's been like working for the founder Ben Francis MBE hit on something very significant about why Gymshark has been so successful

As you might expect they work hard to stay close to their community, they are always coming up with ideas & they work at an incredible pace

But she said Ben is incredibly focussed on self development and his superpower is bouncing back when things go wrong

This is a pattern I see with every successful founder

They know that growth requires taking risk and that sometimes it won't work but they learn from that and use it to get better

In the corporate world we play it safe and minimise risk.

In the founder led world they maximise returns knowing that it might go wrong.

I honestly never expected to get here but Uncensored CMO has just passed 250 episodes which seems wild

I remember celebrating 10, then 50, then 100 and then 200 and somehow here we are at 250

I have no idea how many hours of work has gone in but I wouldn't be surprised if between me and the incredible team we're at the 10,000 hour mark

250 EPISODES

EMBRACE THE TENSION

One of the words I dislike most in corporate life is “alignment”

It just gives me the shivers 

The idea that the game is only about ensuring that you are aligned at all times with those in power is something I think leads to poor results 

We all know the kind of people who hold one opinion but the moment the people in power hint they hold a different one they pivot in a nano second and pretend that view is theirs too

Instead I believe decisions are vastly improved when different perspectives are brought to the table and especially when the customers voice is in the room

That’s why I found this quote from Carly Natalizia the Chief Commercial Officer of Gymshark so refreshing 

Tension is an important part of the decision making process. Just like iron sharpens iron it leads to much better results. 

Rather than seek alignment seek tension. 

Then once a decision is made get fully behind it

The worst feeling is being “aligned” to a decision you didn’t agree with and had no opportunity to challenge 

So embrace the tension.

WHY INNOVATION SHOULD BE OBVIOUS

We have a wonderful principle at System1 which is that Innovation should always be 80:20

80% Familiar
20% New

This isn't just a nice sounding percentage like the famous Pareto Principle but an observation based on tens of thousands of innovation tests

What became obvious is that the optimal balance between 'surprise' and 'happiness' was around 80:20

In other words people like familiarity with a twist

Make it too surprising and people worry they won't like it

Make it too familiar and people won't notice the change

Those from the tech world will recognise a similar pattern for product launches in the MAYA principle - most advanced yet acceptable

Which brings me to my favourite drink Jimmy's Iced Coffee

When I am not drinking Iced Coffee to start my day I am drinking chocolate milkshake as a recovery drink after exercise

So those clever people have nailed that 80:20 rule

It's Jimmy's. Now as Iced Chocolate

Oh and that really cool Cottle (they say Bottle Can I saying Cottle!!) remains and just look at how nice in yellow and brown 🤩

One of the highlights of my week is the Uncensored CMO The Calling status meeting I have with the incredible team at Little Dot Studios

Apart from the serious business of putting on a show for 400 marketers in 5 weeks time we always end up laughing about a question someone asks

Here are 5 genuine ones from today

🧐 Can you record the voice of god sat in a bath tub?

🧐 How much does a t-shirt cannon cost?

🧐 Should Jon be in a kissing booth?

🧐 Can we order a fleet of Limos in case of a tube strike?

🧐 Please make a decision on tote bag vs brown bag?

and yes we do get a lot of s**t done despite all this!

But on that final questions I could do with your help

Why it’s time to slow down

I love being out on a walk with Teddy because it forces me to switch off and let my mind wonder 

It’s so easy for work to consume everything and become our identity 

And herein lies a paradox 

Nothing worth doing is easy as it takes effort and persistence 

But equally you must hold it lightly so it doesn’t consume you 

The incredible Emma Harris knows this better than anyone and has started a much needed podcast to discuss how people get this balance right 

I was immensely grateful to be invited alongside the powerhouse Claudine Collins to talk about our experiences slowing down

For the avoidance of doubt slowing down doesn’t mean achieving less 

Quite the opposite
